Eastwick made life member

LINCOLN’S GAVIN Eastwick
has been made a life member of
the Canterbury Country Rugby
Sub Union after nearly 40 years
of service.
Mr Eastwick, 69, was made a
life member at last week’s annual
general meeting. Until last year,
he was the sub union’s president
and has held various roles over
the years within Canterbury
Country, the Ellesmere Sub Union
and Lincoln Rugby Football
Club.
“It was a special feeling because
I’ve been pretty committed
to country rugby for a long
number of years now,” said Mr
Eastwick.
He played senior rugby in
Christchurch and for Kirwee
before finishing his playing days
early due to back problems.
His first administration role
was with Kirwee as a committee
member. He then went on
to coach Ellesmere rep teams,
which marked the start of his
involvement with Canterbury
Country.
Mr Eastwick has plenty of
fond memories from his years
of involvement with Canterbury
Country.
One that sticks out for him
was the annual games between
Country and Metro when they
were played at Lancaster Park.

“They were tremendous. We
had under-10 kids playing the
early games right through to the
senior game in the afternoon,”
said Mr Eastwick.
“The friendly nature of everyone
and the commitment that
people have to country rugby is
something that appeals to me
more than anything.”
Until recently, Mr Eastwick
had made a habit of keeping
himself busy, being the president
for both the Ellesmere and
Canterbury Country sub unions,
while also serving on the Canterbury
Rugby Football Union
board.
“There comes a time when you
have to take a break,” said Mr
Eastwick.
However, he says that when
the country rugby season starts
he will still put his supporter’s
hat on every Saturday and head
down to the sideline to cheer on
his home club Lincoln.
“If you’re a country rugby supporter
then usually you’re one
for life.”
11-year-old
Ellesmere
archer to
take on
Australians

ELLESMERE Archery Club’s
Ryley Griffiths has been selected
in the Archery New Zealand
transtasman team after only
three years in the sport.
The 11-year-old will shoot
in the cub men’s recurve at the
event ​in Morwell, Victoria, from
April 19-23.
He is the only Ellesmere club
member to make the team after
falling in love with the sport at a
‘have-a-go’ day in Southbridge.
Ryley will also compete in the
Australian youth nationals, also
in Morwell, from April 12-16.
His mother Jane said he is
excited to make the team and
compete overseas.
“Ryley loves the friendships he
has made already from all over
New Zealand and Australia, and
is fortunate to have a great team
of archers around him for support,”
she said.
He is coached by Petra Baker,
who trained under coach Kisik
Lee at the Olympic Training
Center in Chula Vista, united
States, and now teaches junior
archery in North Canterbury.
