“When I joined, there was only
about 18-20 members. Now we
are looking at about close to 40,”
he said.
But Mr Paston said in the
brigade’s early years, while there
probably were a lot of car accidents,
the difference was the
brigade didn’t have the rescue
equipment it has now.
Last year, the brigade was the
first in the country to get a new
appliance featuring the new Fire
and Emergency New Zealand
branding.
Jack Bond (fourth
fellow brigade
members outside
the station in 1971.
Behind them is
the Bedford OLB
appliance (left) and
the Dodge Kew on
loan from Lincoln
College.
The appliance was designed
to respond to vehicle crashes
and carries significant specialist
equipment as well as medical
supplies. Mr Paston said the
brigade has received four brand
new appliances in his time at the
station – including three Iveco
vehicles and a Hino.
The brigade has responded to
many major emergencies over
the years, including the Selwyn
Rd fire in 2013, the Canterbury
earthquakes and Port Hills fire.
Chief fire officer Jeremy Greenwood
said the station’s 50th was
a milestone worth celebrating.
He said the station was originally
built for a membership of
15-20, but alterations over the
years have kept it fit for purpose.
The brigade will celebrate the
anniversary with a barbecue at
the station on Saturday.
WIGRAM MP Megan Woods
and Minister of Conservation
Eugenie Sage are seeking
options from government
departments to help address
quarrying issues in Templeton
and Weedons.
It comes after a meeting with
residents last week.
Dr Woods said she and Ms
Sage will be seeking advice on a
variety of options over the coming
week.
“Once we have received that
advice we will update the residents,”
she said.
This follows news that Fulton
Hogan will not be developing
another quarry in spite of
speculation, 115ha in size, on
Dawsons, Maddisons and Jones
Rds.
The firm has a licence to carry
out exploratory work on the city
council-owned land.
But the company has confirmed
the “nearby block of
land owned by the city council
does not form part of the
preparations for the Dawsons
Rd proposal and Fulton Hogan
has no plans to apply to put a
quarry there.”
MPs seek options to
address quarry issues
Fulton Hogan already has
plans to quarry for up to 40
years on a 170ha section of land
next door. It also has a proposal
for a third site of 21ha on Curraghs
Rd.
Dr Woods said it was a productive
meeting where she and
Ms Sage could listen first hand
to the concerns of residents.
Templeton and Weedons
residents have expressed their
concerns about the health risks,
water issues and the devaluing
of properties at public meetings
in the past couple of months.
Fulton Hogan’s South Island
general manager Craig Stewart
told Selwyn Times the company
will “support public notification
which will enable residents and
businesses to make submissions
on the consent applications.”
Templeton Residents’ Association
chairman Garry Kilday
said he “expected” it to be publicly
notified given the “scale of
opposition.”
He has invited Fulton Hogan
to meet with the association
and then attend a community
meeting.
“We look forward to receiving
a response to our invite,” Mr
Kilday said.
