4 CHAIRPERSON AND CEO INTRODUCTION November/December 2017/January 2018 Defence Business Chairperson and CEO Introduction A word from Chairperson Darryl Mincham and CEO Margot Forster Welcome to Issue 41 of Defence Business, the last for this year. If the success of 2017 is measured by the number of Ministerial announcements made, then 2017 was monumental for the defence industry, with Minister Pyne releasing just shy of 150 during the course of the year. Rarely before have we seen the Defence sector dominate the mainstream media headlines like it has this year, with the sector touted to turn the national economy around and underpin the future prosperity of the nation. This is an exciting time to be in the defence industry. The shift in the defence industry environment is welcome, but it brings with it a need for us to change the way we operate as a national defence industry base. The Australian defence industry is just that, Australian. The investment being made in defence industry capability is nation building stuff and we need to approach it that way, setting aside state rivalries and banding together to compete against established overseas supply chains. For the Defence Teaming Centre, 2017 has been a year of consolidation. After a long period of instability for industry and the need for strong advocacy at the Federal level, we have moved to a phase of national collaboration, mobilising the national industry to ensure we are ready and well positioned to compete and win work on future programs. 2018 will see more changes to the DTC strategy with a renewed emphasis on bringing the national industry base together to meet the future capability and workforce demands. This issue explores the notion of Team Australia, looking at issues such as Intellectual Property, the road to achieving Sovereign Capability and developing the required workforce to deliver future programs. We congratulate industry on a very successful year and we look forward to working with and supporting you all in 2018.
