Motoring Diesel Excise Duty Increases Diesel Vs Petrol cars In the November 2017 budget, the Chancellor announced an increase to diesel car drivers’ vehicle excise duty, to take effect from April this year. The aim is to reduce the dangerous levels of air pollution in the UK by encouraging motorists to choose lower emission models and reduce use. It is believed this will be achieved by increasing the rate for older and more polluting diesel cars. The increased taxes will fund the Government’s £220 million Air Quality Plan. The exhaust gases are calculated using a standard European test (Euro 6) showing the average amount of CO2 produced for every kilometre a car is driven. The age of the car is also taken into consideration. Newer models that meet current emissions standards will, however, be exempt from the higher charge. The new rules apply to cars and not vans or commercial vehicles.
