Rescue remedies for your

Rescue remedies for your garden One thing we should never take for granted, is that a garden keeps growing. Whilst current dry climatic conditions may restrict some garden tasks, life in a garden goes on. And so our gardens call us to continue, as there is still so much we need to do. Despite the severe water shortages being experienced in the Southern and Eastern Cape, a garden keeps growing, and so gardening should continue. Here are a few smart water wise tips for your garden that you can implement right now: •Take steps to save your most valued plants. Be they gifts from friends and relatives, collectable rarities, or your favourite flowers etc, you may consider moving them to pots, or giving them preferential mulching and watering to survive. •Insert watering tubes next to important shrubs. These can be made from 2 litre cold-drink bottles or sawn-off sections of PVC pipe. Water poured down the watering tubes reaches the root zone without running away from the plant. •By pruning or lightly trimming shrubs and fillers, you regain a balanced ratio between roots and foliage. Less water will be needed for a slightly smaller plant. Don’t cut back too much, as this will stimulate too much new growth (which requires more water). •Keep your plants in good condition. It is still the growing season, and so you should still be feeding. Starving plants will be under even more stress, which makes them susceptible to diseases. Make use of slow release fertilisers, like Bounceback, Sudden Impact, organic 3:1:5 or chemical 3:1:5 (26) SR. Bonemeal is a great fertiliser for hardening off plants, without making them shoot out too much. You can also use soluble fertilisers such as Seagro or Nitrosol which are not as strong as standard granular feeds. •Cover large tracts of exposed soil in beds. Exposure to wind, and the baking effect of sun, damages surface roots, and leads to evaporation of valuable water. Plant water wise ground covers like portulaca, verbena, aptenia or felicia close together, to help shade and shelter the soil around your plants. Alternatively, make use of a thick mulch of bark chips, gravel, pine needles or dry grass clipping to cover exposed soil. •Construct ridges, rises and berms around plants or whole beds to trap water around your plants. These ‘dams’ encourage water to soak into the soil directly around the roots. •Add some joy to your life, in your garden. A small pot on the patio or at the front door is easy to maintain. Use some water wise flowering plants to colour your life. Pelargoniums, bougainvillea and lavender will bring a smile back to your garden. What to plant now? Lavender (Laventel Lavandula dentata ‘Elegans’) Bushy shrub, with fragrant dark green leaves and dark purple flowers from spring to summer. Excellent cut flower. Can be used as pot-pourri. Ideal as focus or hedge plant. Evergreen. Plant in a sunny position. Mature plant size may vary due to growing conditions and climate, ±80cm x 1.5m. Agapanthus (Agapanthus africanus ‘New Blue’) The word Agapanthus is interestingly derived from the Greek words ‘agapѐ’ meaning love and anthos meaning flower. Agapanthus ‘Zambezi’ brings a whole new dimension to these ‘love flowers’ with their striking broad variegated leaves and violet flower heads. Agapanthus enjoy full sun or semi shade where they should be planted in well drained soil. It is important to remember that low light areas can encourage less flowering. Agapanthus’ New Blue’ grows to approximately 70 cm in height and produces tall strong flower spikes above the foliage. These spikes hold a globular head bearing open faced violet – blue flowers which appear through the summer months, generally from December to March. Regular deep watering especially during the summer will keep these plants happy however once established they are water wise specimens. For strong leaves and exceptional flowers be sure to feed with a good compost and organic fertiliser. Agapanthus ‘New Blue’ is evergreen and indigenous and will handle very light frost. They are good for coastal gardening and make excellent cut flowers. Small groupings make excellent focal points; they cope well in containers and help attract butterflies and bees to your garden! Lemon Grass (Cymbopogon citratus) Lemon Grass is a tropical grass with a sweet lemon scent that will take your Asian cooking to a whole new level! It has both medicinal and culinary attributes in Thai and Eastern Asian cultures. Easy to grow and very rewarding it thrives in fertile, loamy soil and loves nitrogen rich fertilizers. Ensure it has a full sun position and be sure to cover it against frost if your garden is prone to this. It can also be planted in a container and then brought indoors to a sunny, warm window sill in winter. To harvest stalks use a knife to slice off the stem at soil level just below swollen ends. Delicious Lemon Grass bulbs can be added whole to stir-fry’s or once peeled can be crushed or chopped. The bulbs also make a refreshing tea.

Onderwyser: “Waar is jou huiswerk?” “Omdat hy so lelik skryf, Juffrou,” antwoord Jannie. Sannie kom by die huis na haar eerste skooldag. Ma: ” Middag Sannie, het jy baie geleer vandag?” Sannie: “Nie te veel nie, Ma. Ek moet môre weer teruggaan.” Hoekom is ‘n onderwyser so spesiaal?
