Stop telling people to go to your website.
from the
editor
5
Stop telling people to go to your website.
I have a serious problem with people who tell me to go to their website.
I JUST GOT OFF AN EMAIL WHERE THE PERSON SAID, “I ENCOURAGE YOU TO GO TO THE
WEBSITE TO LEARN MORE.”
CHRIS MASCARO
Editor & creative director
Now I feel dumb. I won’t ever call them back because I already went to the website…and I still
didn’t understand and have questions. I went to your website FIRST and that’s why I emailed you.
And I guess I’m a dummy.
And then I vowed to myself to never tell anyone that again.
Why?
Because at that moment, during a conversation or email, your customer is already engaged with you and your brand and
asking more questions. If they’ve reached out, it’s your chance to fully walk through the conversation and help them…not to
assume they haven’t gone to the website to let your online presence do all the talking to them. In fact, that’s pushing people in
the WRONG direction.
We use social media and websites to encourage people to email and call. If you’re doing the opposite: people have called and
emailed and you’re sending them in the opposite direction…you’re doing it wrong.
There are times when you have to send people back: perhaps you are a subscription service, but the best service I’ve seen is
where they walk WITH you through subscribing online, or they ask for permission, “Can I sign you up while we are talking on
the phone?”
Perhaps it was a moment for me where my stress levels are through the roof and I’m feeling pretty impatient, but then I have
to remember, how many clients and customers are the same as me, short and stressed and tense and calling or emailing because
they want quick and easy info. They’ve surfed the web and didn’t find the answer and now they are reaching out…what
a golden moment!
A comment like “I encourage you to visit the website,” is a conversation killer.
If they answer yes, and the answer was there in an obvious place you’re just pointing out how stupid they are. If it isn’t on the
website and you referred them back, then your site didn’t do its job and you are reminding the customer that you don’t have
time for them. Which one do you prefer the customer choose? Door A? or Door B? Isn’t that our goal as a business…to be
snide and make our customers feel bad about themselves?
Have you been to the website is just a poor question. “I encourage you to visit the website” is just as bad.
Let’s assume all our customers have been there. Let’s face it, they’ve reached out and emailed or called us. Why would you
leave a potential sale hanging?
How Solar Thermal Panels Help
Schools Save Money
RENEWABLE SOURCES OF ENERGY
ARE ESSENTIAL FOR ENSURING A
SUSTAINABLE FUTURE. BUT THAT’S
JUST ONE OF MANY UPSIDES TO
INSTALLING SOLAR THERMAL PANELS.
The savings to be had by switching to
solar are immense and large institutions
stand to save the most. Here are a few
ways solar thermal panels can help
schools and colleges save money.
School Layouts
Mean a More Cost-
Effective Installation
Unsuitable roofs are one of the biggest
arguments against solar panels. Angled
installations don’t get consistent sun and
residential areas are more shaded. This
means a solar system installation is less
cost-effective than it could be.
Schools don’t have this problem. The
typical layout of a school is perfect for
solar installation. School buildings often
have flat roofs and plenty of unshaded
space. This means greater solar panel
output and greater savings for the school.
Reduced Operating
Costs
The cost of energy consumption is
calculated by determining the cost per
unit of energy. These units are called
megawatt-hours or kilowatt-hours.
CONSTRUCTIONMONTHLY.COM
technology
9
As of 2016, solar is
the cheapest energy
resource in the world.
In other words, it’s the
energy resource with
the lowest cost per
kilowatt-hour.
For context, the rate of energy
consumption is measured in kilowatts
or megawatts.
As of 2016, solar is the cheapest
energy resource in the world. In other
words, it’s the energy resource with
the lowest cost per kilowatt-hour.
What’s more, large-scale installations
save the most money. In 2016 Dubai
set the world record for the lowestcost
solar energy. Their massive
solar array bid at under 3 cents per
kilowatt-hour.
Schools and colleges often have
sprawling campuses. This means they
stand to benefit more than most from
going solar.
Solar Energy Is
Consistent
Energy costs are notoriously
inconsistent.
Grid energy prices are trending
upwards at a gradual but steady rate.
And with natural gas prices only likely
to increase, this trend is here to stay.
Electricity prices also fluctuate
depending on the time of month,
season, or year.
Solar energy is consistent – the
only cost being the installation and
upkeep of the system. Installing solar
thermal panels helps insulate schools
against energy rate fluctuations and
increases. The more consistent the
school’s energy costs, the easier it is
for the school to plan and budget for
the future.
Going Solar Will
Improve the
School’s Brand and
Drive Enrollment
Young people are the most
environmentally conscious in the
world. Studies have found that
youth aren’t shy about demanding a
sustainable future and believe that
investment in renewable energy is
critical to achieving it.
Committing your school to sustainable
practices improves its image. This,
in turn, makes it more attractive to
socially-conscious students.
Additionally, people associate schools
and colleges with innovation and
forward-thinking. Using the newest
and most efficient form of energy
will flag your school as a progressive
establishment.
Solar Thermal
Panels Are a No-
Brainer
Switching to solar isn’t just great
for the environment. Installing solar
thermal panels will save your school
money and improve your brand. And
with schools like Yale and Princeton
running solar on-site, you’d be in good
company.
With schools and colleges working
towards cleaner air for all, you can too.
Here are 7 indoor plants that improve
your homes air quality.
7
STEPS TO GET
FINANCIALLY FIT
IN 2018
finance
13
“Managing one payment is a lot
easier,” says Alia Dudum, consumer
debt expert for LendingClub.
“With lower interest rates on your
debt through loan consolidation,
you’re setting 2018 up as your best
year yet.”
De-clutter and sell:
Have an aunt that gives you an ugly sweater
every holiday? Consider selling your unwanted
clothes, gift cards, electronics, and
the like, online. Sites such as Raise, thredUP,
and Ebay are great places to sell your unwanted
items and earn extra cash.
Start investing:
Investing doesn’t have to be scary. And you
can start small (such as taking the extra
cash you earned from selling your unwanted
items!). The easiest way to start investing
is to make sure you are enrolled in your
employers’ retirement savings plan. You
can also use apps such as Stash, Robinhood,
or Acorns to begin.
Check your credit report: Planning
on making any big purchases in 2018? Your
credit report contains information about
the status of your credit accounts and your
bill-paying history. The Consumer Financial
Protection Bureau (CFPB) recommends
checking your report at least once a year,
and check again before applying for loans
for big purchases such as cars or a home.
Keep in mind that if your credit is frozen,
you can anticipate a $20-$30 charge to unfreeze
your credit so a report can be run.
Make a plan to ditch your debt:
Evaluate all the different loans and any
credit card debt that you’ve accrued and
consider combining them into a single loan
with one easy payment. A loan with LendingClub
transfers all your different debts
into one place, and with a much lower interest
rate.
Create a budget:
Ah, the dreaded “B” word. To avoid taking
on even more debt in 2018, make a budget
to plan your spending. Think about your net
income, allocate 10 percent of your paycheck
to your savings, itemize necessary
expenses, and then you an use what’s leftover
for vacations, shopping, and eating out.
Take a money minute:
Get into the habit of scheduling time to look
at your spending and checking in on your
financial goals. Put an alert on your calendar
to check it once a week. You should
also make this a family affair by scheduling
meetings with your spouse, parents and
children to talk about your financial status
and your financial goals.
Reward yourself:
If your downfall is spending and racking
up credit card debt, for example, allocate
a small amount of money to treat yourself
to something small once you have reached
a specific financial goal, such as paying off
that one credit card, not eating out every
day, or sticking to your budget.
LendingClub is a smarter way to take your
debt head-on in 2018. For more ideas on
how to make 2018 a prosperous year, visit
Help for Homeowners On the Hook for
Billions in Hurricane Damages
newsusa
We recognize that
restoring communities begins
with getting homeowners back
into their homes as quickly as
possible, with a roof they can trust
to protect the things that matter
most in their lives.
Sponsored by GAF
AND NOW COMES THE ARDUOUS TASK OF
REBUILDING HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF HOUSES
DESTROYED OR DAMAGED BY HURRICANES HARVEY
AND IRMA.
And with it, alas, the realization by all too many homeowners
that they’re the ones on the hook for the cost of a large
chunk of their own repair work.
THE MAIN REASON? IN A WORD:
FLOODING.
While areas like the Florida Keys were decimated by
winds that reached 130 mph -- a quarter of all houses there
were demolished and another 65 percent suffered major
damage -- a lot of the wreckage from this summer’s double
wallop came from floodwaters. And since homeowners’
insurance policies typically cover wind and hail but exclude
(you guessed it) flood damage. . .
Well, even given the miscellany of federal, state and local
aid programs out there, you can see why some estimate the
total out-of-pocket costs for Texas and Florida homeowners
at $28 billion and $13.1 billion respectively.
“There’s going to be a huge uninsured economic
loss here,” Pete Mills, a senior vice president at the
Mortgage Bankers Association, has said.
As in past emergencies, fellow Americans immediately
joined a long list of companies like Apple, Verizon, and
Chevron in donating truckloads of money, clothes, and
other products to help with the relief efforts.
One of the latest corporate initiatives seems especially
apt, given all those houses that need to be rebuilt.
In what it says is a first-of-its kind program for them, GAF,
North America’s largest roofing manufacturer, is offering a
special financing program for homeowners in need of roof
repairs in FEMA-designated areas for individual assistance
of Texas, Florida, and Georgia.
CONSTRUCTIONMONTHLY.COM
17
Through November 30, 2017, they can take advantage of
zero percent interest over 36 months of equal payments.
“The hurricanes have had a devastating impact on so
many people,” said Jim Schnepper, president of GAF.
“We recognize that restoring communities begins with
getting homeowners back into their homes as quickly as
possible, with a roof they can trust to protect the things
that matter most in their lives.”
Know that the financing is available only through GAF
factory-certified contractors, who can be located
through the company’s website at gaf.com/rebuild.
SAVING THE PLANET
MEANS MORE THAN
RENEWABLES
RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES, LIKE SOLAR PANELS, WILL NEVER REPLACE
FOSSIL FUELS UNTIL ENERGY EFFICIENCY IMPROVES.
BY NEWSUSA
CONSTRUCTIONMONTHLY.COM
green
building
21
When it comes to going green, the talk begins and ends
with renewable energy. But to effect real environmental
change, the world’s going to need more than solar
power alone.
IN JUNE 2008, CHINA AND INDIA, ALONG WITH THE GROUP
OF EIGHT COUNTRIES -; JAPAN, THE U.S., BRITAIN, GERMANY,
RUSSIA, SOUTH KOREA, CANADA AND ITALY -; VOWED TO
INVEST IN MORE RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES. BUT TO CRE-
ATE TRULY SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES, RENEWABLE POWER
MUST BE COMBINED WITH ENERGY-EFFICIENT BUILDING
MATERIALS.
The world can’t do better than building green. Buildings, between
their construction and their energy needs, currently create 43
percent of the world’s carbon emissions and consume 41 percent
of the energy generated -; that’s almost 50 percent more than the
transportation industry. To truly reduce carbon emissions, cities
need to build durable and energy-efficient structures that make
the most of renewable energies.
For example, one company, Alternative Construction Technologies
(ACTech), has developed a galvanized steel structural insulated
panel that is up to 65 percent more energy-efficient than other
building materials. The panels, which form the walls, roofs and
even floors, regulate indoor air temperature, so insulated-panel
buildings use less energy to run their heating and cooling systems.
The panels prove green in manufacture, too. Each panel contains
up to 73 percent reclaimed materials. ACTech panels
are Class-1 fire rated and resist structural damage caused
by moisture, insects and hurricane-strength winds. The panels’
durability can help reduce consumers’ insurance costs as well.
Workers require no special training, tools or materials to build
with ACTech panels. Developers can use ACTech panels to quickly
build strong, economical and healthy homes -; ACTech panels
improve indoor air quality.
Twenty-four cities now have green building mandates. But energy
efficiency has to move beyond low-flow faucets. Builders must
combine green building with renewable energy sources to reduce
carbon emissions and hedge against rising energy costs. Some
companies are starting to respond to this demand -; one solar
company can offer developers free solar roof tiles when builders
construct the building envelope with the ACTech panel system and
use the electricity generated.
For more information about green building, visit www.ACTechPanel.com
or call 1-800-859-8813. ACTech trades on the OTC Bulletin
under the symbol ACCY.
Tips to Save
on Home
Insurance
IT’S NOT WISE TO GO WITHOUT HOME
INSURANCE, BUT INCREASING COSTS
CAN MAKE PAYING FOR PROTECTION
DIFFICULT.
COMPARE PRICES
Shopping around can
take awhile, but extra time
spent could mean extra savings.
Consult consumer guides, insurance
agents and online insurance
quote services, not only to
compare prices, but also to find
complaints. Many states offer
rate and complaint information
for major insurance companies.
Why the high costs? Some homeowners used low interest
rates to move into larger homes, which need more
coverage. Increased construction costs leave homes
more expensive to replace. Experts predict that natural
disasters will increase, making full coverage even more
difficult and expensive in high-risk areas. Recent storms
and fires have caused insurance companies to pay damages,
so they raised premiums.
But there are ways to protect your home and still save
money on your home insurance policy. Here are some
tips for savvy insurance shoppers:
CONSTRUCTIONMONTHLY.COM
usiness
35
USE THE SAME COMPANY FOR HOME
AND AUTO INSURANCE
Many companies will lower premiums for customers
buying more than one policy.
UPGRADE YOUR HOME
Installing a home security system can lower
premiums. Modernizing electrical, heating
and cooling, and plumbing systems will lead some
insurers to offer discounts.
RAISE YOUR DEDUCTIBLE
Your deductible is the amount of money that
you must pay towards damages. Raising your deductible
will lower your premiums.
Many insurers offer discounts to homeowners who
install the FloLogic System. Like a circuit-breaker for
the home plumbing system, the FloLogic monitors an
entire building’s water system, then shuts off the water
when it senses leaks. Insurers often face hefty water
damage claims, so taking steps to prevent floods can
help lower premiums.
COVER DAMAGES LESS THAN $1,000
Too many claims catch insurers’ attention, leading
them to refuse renewal or raise premiums. If the damages
cost less than your deductible, pay for them out-ofpocket.
You’ll want to own insurance for larger damages
in the future.
For more information about the FloLogic System, visit www.flologic.com
2018’s top trending
“The PPG Paints
brand’s 2018 Color of
(PPG1043-7). It offers
the silencing impact of
black with the possibility
says Schlotter.
(BPT) - Whether you’ve been a loyalist to the same shade of green for the last decade or if you’re an evolving
follower of trends whose color choices have shifted over the years, the trending color of 2018 is sure to
surprise and intrigue you. Indeed, black is back. But how was this classic shade named the trending color of the
year? While many assume the choice is random, trending colors are based on many influencers, but where do they
really begin? Trending colors arise from consumer preferences, which are formed by societal influences, such as
politics, economics, lifestyle and overall sentiment. We as a society hold the power of prompting new color trends
based on our ever-changing attitudes, ideas and actions.
Dee Schlotter, senior color marketing manager for PPG, a leader in paint and color, understands the path to
determining each year’s top trending color. Schlotter and more than 20 PPG color stylists from around the world
meet annually at the company’s Global Color Trends Workshop. “Our team of global color experts assess societal
and cultural influences to forecast what colors will be popular in home decor, consumer goods, automotive and
even airplanes for the upcoming year,” Schlotter says. “We also look at what’s happening in society, and the state
of people’s emotions because of current events. All of this information helps us predict what colors will truly resonate
with people in the coming year, especially when it comes to the paint in their homes.”
the silencing impact of black with the possibility
and hopefulness of indigo seen in the
Schlotter adds that black will be very popular
in 2018 because it offers a break from
an often chaotic and over-worked world.
“With society facing overstimulation and a
need to take refuge, the color black offers
a comforting retreat, and a chance to start
new and get back to the basics,” she says.
“Black Flame represents that necessary
void and the need for nothingness that
helps us recharge, making it a timeless and
classic color in home decor.”
Pairing the PPG Paints brand’s
Black Flame with Millennial
orange-pinks, teals and warm
gray or mocha browns for an
enveloping, rich look and feel.
A PALETTE OF OPTIONS
While going darker can seem intimidating at
first, incorporating black into your existing
decor is a lot easier than you think.
Many people mistakenly believe that all
blacks are the same. However, black, like
any other color, is available in a wide array
of shades. For example, Glidden paint’s
2018 Color of the Year, Deep Onyx (00NN
07/000), is a deep and rich black that
encourages a less-is-more attitude when
applying to home decor, while Black Magic
(OL116), the 2018 Color of the Year for
Olympic paints, is more glamorous and
looks great as a statement color for walls.
To keep a space more fresh
and modern, consider pairing
a black hue with whites, matte
finishes or light-grain wood
finishes.
And, if you’re looking for some darker inspiration
outdoors, Olympic stain’s Maximum
product in a Cinder semi-transparent stain
color (905) is a great complement to Black
Magic when applied to exterior surfaces
like doors, window trims and shutters.
Any of these black hues can be a defining
piece in your decor while providing you
with the mental escape you need. Schlotter
adds that capitalizing on this year’s color
trend isn’t solely about the color itself, but
what you pair it with. Consider some of her
other tips and tricks, including:
Feeling a bit more daring?
Make an impactful statement
with black by applying it from
floor to ceiling on an accent
wall or in an entire room.
will make the decor stand out, because
the dark walls will highlight artwork and
accessories while providing depth and
character, creating a perfect space for
respite and conversation.
TO KEEP A SPACE MORE FRESH AND
MODERN, CONSIDER PAIRING A
BLACK HUE WITH WHITES, MATTE
FINISHES OR LIGHT-GRAIN WOOD.
Outside of paint, reinvented versions of
the classic black hue are showing up in key
design elements - from faucets, to matte
black appliances, to black veined granite
countertops, black windows and marble
floors,” says Schlotter. “The possibilities
are truly endless when it comes to adding
this misunderstood neutral in the home.”

Benefits of Attending
Trade Shows for
Businesses
by By Darryl Neal
writer for ezinearticles.com
EVERY YEAR AROUND THE WORLD, THOUSANDS OF COMPA-
NIES SET UP EXHIBITION STANDS AT TRADE SHOWS, AND MIL-
LIONS UPON MILLIONS OF PEOPLE ATTEND THEM. IN ALMOST
EVERY INDUSTRY THERE IS A TRADE FAIR OR CONVENTION
THAT IS CONSIDERED A “MUST-ATTEND” EVENT, YET WHAT
ARE THE REASONS FOR THIS, AND IS IT REALLY WORTH AT-
TENDING THIS KIND OF EVENT?
One of the main benefits of attending a trade fair is the fact that
it gives many companies the chance to scope out the market and
what their competitors and associates are doing. Many businesses
will invest in the best booth designs that will allow them to show off
the projects they are working on in an interactive way, meaning that
visitors can really get to grips with developments.
designs that make your offerings stand out from the crowd.
Expertly developed booth designs will help draw customers to
your exhibitions stand, give you the opportunity to explain what
you have to offer and win over potential new customers. To make
sure that your booth is set up for maximum effectiveness, consult
with a trusted exhibition stand designer for a detailed plan on how
to achieve this.
There are many other opportunities that arise at trade shows,
and one of these is the possibility to take part in any number of
educational talks and lectures, which can give you an insight into
various aspects of your industry. This can help you become better
educated in order to develop your own projects further, and therefore
pass the benefits of your knowledge on to clients.
AS WELL AS MAKING USEFUL INDUSTRY CONTACTS, MEET-
ING POTENTIAL NEW CUSTOMERS AND SCOPING OUT
WHAT IS HAPPENING IN YOUR SECTOR, THESE KINDS OF
EVENTS ALSO ALLOW YOU THE OPPORTUNITY TO UNWIND
AND ENJOY SOCIALISING WITH LIKE MINDED INDIVIDU-
ALS, NOT TO MENTION KEEP YOU AND YOUR COLLEAGUES
MOTIVATED TO KEEP ON DOING GOOD WORK.
This is crucial information to glean for any business, as in all
industries new developments are being made all the time, and old
ones are falling by the wayside. Attending an event can therefore
provide an important insight into exactly what is happening in your
industry, right now.
As well as learning what the competition is up to in the way of
developing new projects, products and services, attending a trade
fair is also a great way to meet valuable industry contacts in the
flesh, which is why these events are often melting pots where a lot
of professionals come together and share ideas.
Regardless of the industry you are in, there will be undoubtedly
another company or professional in attendance at the fair that will
catch your interest, perhaps as a potential future associate or business
partner. This kind of trade show also gives the opportunity to
catch up with existing colleagues and associates who you may not
see face to face very frequently otherwise.
Thirdly, going to a trade fair is a great way to make contact with
potential customers. This works best, of course, if you are actually
exhibiting at the fair yourself, and have invested in some good booth
This can be especially true at events that are organised with
an intent to educate - many business development events will not
only feature exhibitions stands and booth designs from a variety of
professionals, but there will also be a heavy focus on learning and
business growth, which can have many benefits for your company.
Fifthly and finally, one reason why attending trade fairs is a
great idea is that it allows business owners and employees to have a
little bit of fun! Travelling and networking with other experts in the
industry are some of the perks of any job, and it can add variety to
any business’s routine.
6 tips to make
the bathroom
SELLABLE,
&
ENJOYABLE,
at the same time
BY BRANDPOINT
(BPT) - WHEN IT COMES TIME TO SELL YOUR
HOME, NOT ALL ROOMS ARE CREATED
EQUAL. SURE, POTENTIAL BUYERS WILL
WALK THROUGH THE ENTIRE HOUSE, BUT
THEIR OPINION OF A FEW PRIMARY ROOMS
CAN ULTIMATELY DETERMINE WHETHER
THEY CHOOSE TO OFFER OR WALK.
Your bathroom(s) - especially your master
bathroom - are among these key rooms. As you
prepare to put your home on the market, it’s time
to take an honest look at these spaces. What do
the bathrooms say about your house? Do they
say “buy me now” or “no thanks”? If it’s the latter,
then it’s time for a few home improvements that
will turn the sale of your house from stale to sold.
A SOUND INVESTMENT?
Yes, it is. In fact, bathroom remodeling projects are some of the most cost-effective
improvements you can make to a home, according to HGTV. A minor bathroom
remodel has an average return on investment of 102 percent at the point of sale.
A major remodel returns 93 percent of your investment. That means your newly upgraded
bathroom will actually help sell your home for more money in the long run.
CONSTRUCTIONMONTHLY.COM
45
SO WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?
IMPROVE YOUR BATHROOM TODAY
WITH THESE SIX TIPS BELOW.
REPLACE THAT OLD FLOORING. Carpet and tiny tile flooring - offering
two different looks and feels - are both similarly outdated when
it comes to bathroom decor. Alternately, hardwood floors can add a
more current, upgraded touch and can be achieved with water- and
stain-resistant ceramic tile that looks like hardwood. This delivers a
distinctively modern look in a medium ideal for the humid bathroom
environment.
A NEW LOOK FOR A FAMILIAR SOAK. Nothing conveys the comfort
of an extraordinary bathroom like a luxurious soak in the tub. To set
your bathroom, and your home, apart from the competition, replace
your existing tub with the Studio Fold Over Edge tub from American
Standard. This tub uniquely allows for a custom finish to the front
apron to match wall tile and décor, creating a handsomely coordinated
room. Plus, the tub’s spacious bathing well and extra lumbar support
mean relaxation and enjoyment for you before the sale.
SHED A NEW LIGHT. Proper lighting is essential in any bathroom and
up-to-date light fixtures are a great way to increase the wow factor
for potential buyers. If your bathroom currently displays the outdated
style of exposed bulb fixtures, try replacing them with contemporary
wall sconce lights to create a look that is sure to draw your visitors’
attention.
FIND A FIRST-RATE FAUCET. Even a perfectly functional bathroom
can be discredited by potential buyers if it showcases dated brass faucets
and accents. If your space is guilty, try replacing the existing faucet
with an American Standard Patience bath sink faucet. Offered in
widespread or single handle models, these classically chic styles allow
for easy operation by all users in the home. Plus, the choice of popular
polished chrome or brushed nickel finishes provides a high-style look
to entice home buyers, while delivering a water-efficient performance.
SINK THAT OLD SINK. Those rounded-edge Formica sinks had their
share of the limelight, but now their time has passed. Today’s modern
bathrooms have become edgier, especially when it comes to sinks.
Straight-edge designs, made from natural stone, quartz or contemporary
solid surface material, are popular sink solutions today. Replacing
your old sink with a newer style helps ensure your bathroom isn’t left
behind. Home buyers notice sinks, and this is one project you should
tackle for higher return when you sell.
SHOWER YOUR BATHROOM WITH A NEW UPGRADE. Your
showering experience should be as customizable as it is enjoyable. The
GROHE SmartControl thermostatic trim offers intuitive, push-andturn
button operation for water temperature and flow rate control,
all in a sleek, low-profile design. Available in both round and square
styles, in stylish chrome, brushed nickel or white finishes, it’s the
shower system you’ll enjoy every morning - and so will your home’s
next owners.
A CONCRETE MASONRY
HOME CAN BRING
YOU PEACE - OF - MIND
CONCERNING YOUR
FAMILY’S SAFETY.
Concrete construction is not what people generally think of
when they consider the main material their home should be
made from. Most assume that a house is built from wood frames
and insulation. However, what they don’t realize are the many
benefits concrete can provide.
CONCRETE MASONRY NOT ONLY
PROTECTS, IT IS ALSO A GREAT
WAY TO LOWER UTILITY BILLS.
Concrete masonry walls are solid, continuous
and airtight, whereas wood-framed walls
are a collection of components leaving many
joints for potential air leaks. Today’s designers
recognize concrete’s energy efficiency
and can therefore justify smaller heating and
air conditioning systems, creating savings
from the start.
BEYOND THE BEAUTY OF CONCRETE MASONRY
LIE THE RUGGEDNESS AND DURABILITY.
Concrete masonry is built to last and is a solid investment for your
family in terms of both value and safety. Insurance companies
recognize concrete as being safer than any other form of construction
material when fire threatens a home. It is completely
non-combustible and is classified as an A1 resistant material. When
disaster strikes in the form of hurricanes, tornadoes or wild fires,
your family can be sure they will be secure in a home with concrete
walls. Today’s strongest residential wall systems are made of concrete
masonry.
The low maintenance of concrete masonry is
also an appealing feature. Termites, rotting
and paint peeling or fading rarely affect
concrete homes. Concrete masonry can also
withstand the elements better, reducing the
damage from wind and rain over the lifetime
of a home.
One other benefit that does not carry a price tag is the peace
and quiet that concrete provides. The greater mass of a concrete
masonry wall can reduce sound penetrating through a wall by over
80 percent when compared to a wood frame. With home building
space becoming more scarce, we are now becoming forced to build
our homes closer together and near noisier places like highways,
railways and airports.
Yesterday’s Factories Could Be
Tomorrow’s Offices and Homes
In many cases, it’s also
more time-efficient
than demolition
BY STATEPOINT
(StatePoint) To counter generic new
construction projects, many cities
structures into vibrant tech offices,
loft-style residences and even art
institutions -- a process known as
“adaptive reuse.”
What’s more, adaptive reuse can be
an eco-friendly option. By avoiding
demolition of existing structures,
architects reduce the amount of waste
