Scout’s honour
”While I was designing a badge to go to the
Canadian Scout Jamboree near Halifax this summer,
I decided to feature some local animals as part
of the design. When I discovered that moose were
endangered in Nova Scotia, I thought that selling
the badge as a fundraiser would not only be a neat
aspect for the trip, but that it would also be a good
capstone project for my Chief Scout’s Award.
”I did some research on organizations that could help protect endangered
species in Nova Scotia, and that is when I learned about the Nature Conservancy
of Canada (NCC). I set up a fundraiser on Indiegogo, sold over 400 badges
and raised over $1,300, which I presented to representatives of NCC just prior
to receiving my Chief Scout’s Award at the Canadian Jamboree.
”The badge features a dabbing moose, an Atlantic walrus (a word I like to use)
and the Harlequin duck. My favourite animal is a wolf, which is protected by
several organizations of which I am a member, including NCC.“
Common sense conservation
”I made the decision several years ago to
support NCC for many reasons. I like their
common sense, non-confrontational
method of advocacy for our rich and
diverse natural resources. They are wise
enough to recognize that governments
change on a regular basis, and along with
those changes come new commercial
initiatives. The only effective way to ensure
that our country’s vital natural spaces will
be forever protected is for a group like NCC
to purchase and manage those spaces.
”Another thing that has kept me contributing
for so long is NCC’s non-obtrusive way
of maintaining relationships with their
supporters. I appreciate the regular updates
on current initiatives. NCC demonstrates
a respectful business model, both
in how they manage the contributions of
their donors and in how they commit to
environmental stewardship. I am proud to
count myself a long-term supporter!“
