Mathematics
As one of the core subjects in the National
Curriculum we expect all pupils to become fluent in
the fundamentals of mathematics. We introduce
varied and frequent practice with increasingly
complex problems over time, so that pupils develop
conceptual understanding and the ability to recall
and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately. We
want children to reason mathematically, solve
problems and apply their mathematical knowledge
to Science and other subjects. The subject includes
strands in Number, Ratio and Proportion, Algebra,
Measurement, Geometry and Statistics.
We believe all children should learn Mathematics to
help them to understand the world and appreciate
the beauty and power of Mathematics. We aim to
make children feel confident by helping to make
connections and links between ideas, knowledge and
the real world – through investigations, discussions
and experiments.
We want to ensure that making mistakes in
Mathematics is seen as a crucial part of the learning
process, giving an insight into what has been
misunderstand or misinterpreted – these mistakes
act as a vehicle for new learning to tackle
misconceptions and deepen understanding.
All children have a specific
Mathematics lesson every
day, enhanced by a basic
skills lesson with a focus on
rapid recall and basic
number facts and
calculation. These lessons
contribute towards
improving efficiency and
fluency of calculation in
line with the new national
expectations.
Teachers use the
‘Lancashire Planning
Support’ scheme of work
alongside other resources.
This caters for a wide range
of abilities to provide the
children a rich variety of
mathematical experiences and opportunities to
enable them to use and apply their skills. The skills
and knowledge gained in these specific lessons are
then applied through other subjects and in real life
experiences at Natural Thinkers and activities in the
Food Lab.
Whole school Mathematics Days and monthly
newsletter challenges provide children and their
families opportunities to collaborate whilst solving
mathematical problems. These are celebrated
around the school in assemblies and on the Maths
Blog.
