- 12 - As we begin winding down this fiscal year we start gearing up for the next. At April’s chapter meeting, members will have the opportunity to sign up for participation on our various committees. With that in mind, please read the article below which comes from the Manual for Chapter Management in the Membership Section on our national website. Although it addresses the benefits of leadership and management, it can also pertain to the opportunities for members to contribute their skills through committee involvement. As stated in the Standing Rules of the Chapter Yearbook (Membership 1.02), all voting members shall serve on at least one standing committee. Serving on a committee is a great way to contribute to the chapter, interact with other members and embrace the Values as stated in our Strategic Plan: Accountability, Commitment, Ethics, Fellowship, Leadership and Respect. For a list of committees, please refer to Article 8 “Standing and Special Committees” of the Bylaws section of the Chapter Yearbook. Peg Ball, Pres. Elect. BENEFITS OF LEADERSHIP IN ASSISTANCE LEAGUE The opportunity to serve as a leader at the chapter or national level offers many benefits to our members. Whether accepting a committee chair position or serving as an elected officer, members discover that their leadership experience is meaningful and positive. Individual gains for members might include: · Increasing technology skills · Improved organizational abilities · Enhanced time management skills · Increased self-confidence and self esteem · Improved public speaking ability · Opportunities for more personal interaction with chapter members · Intensified feelings of accomplishment · Measurable growth in achieving chapter goals · Opportunities to affect the positive culture of the chapter · Pride in facilitating involvement by other members · Initiating or re-defining chapter procedures to increase effectiveness · Realizing the benefits of teamwork Certainly many members have appreciated the opportunity leadership in Assistance League has provided to improve their technology skills, grant writing ability or management capabilities. They have experienced personal growth that they can apply in other situations. Others have experienced individual satisfaction as a leader by sharing their particular expertise with other chapter members to expand the skill sets of other members. A Grants Committee Chairman or Communications Chairman may help committee members acquire new skills that benefit not only the chapter, but also the individuals. In one chapter, a charter member who had served in many roles was reluctant to accept the chapter presidency due to fear of leading the chapter regular meetings. During her term she ‘grew’ into the role becoming increasingly confidant in her leadership and speaking skills. Her new abilities have served her well in subsequent roles in Assistance League and other organizations. Other members find much personal satisfaction in leading their team to help achieve a goal defined in the chapter’s strategic plan. By defining specific actions steps and a workable timeline to guide the team’s efforts, the leader and other members are able to maximize the effects of their effort. Through leadership efforts, the chairman of a philanthropic program facilitated the committee’s work to serve more recipients, thereby increasing the positive results of the chapter and enhancing its reputation in the community. Assistance League offers members many opportunities to contribute their skills, knowledge and experience to accomplish our mission. Truly, stepping up as a leader will be a rewarding experience in “working together… making a difference.
RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE Golf Tourney - Janice Hallisey, Chair · SAVE THE DATE: April 23, 2018 - Assistance League Spring Fund Raiser Golf Event is well on its way! - Thus far, 28 "Clothe a Kid" Flags have been sold ($1,500) - Pledges of $9,085 have been secured representing 8 sponsors. - "PLAY A ROUND" FOR THE KIDS @ THE Berry Creek Country Club. You can help by forwarding any sponsorship donations or inquiries to Janice Hallisey, Chair - Golf Event. Library Event - Joanne Harrah, Chair - Partnered event with the Georgetown Library for May 19th. - Upscale, Gala "Through the Looking Glass" theme at $50 per person. THRIFT SHOP Carol Palmer, Chair January Thrift Shop sales were $21,775 which is approximately $4,000 more than sales from Feb 2017. Furniture, boutique and women’s clothing were the top sales areas. Work has been started to clear out merchandise in preparation of upcoming move. - 13 - Several members have expressed interest in becoming Shift Managers. Training has begun in this area. Gathering ideas for possible floor plans and suggestions for merchandise display for new location. GRANTS COMMITTEE Judy Butler, Chair - Application has been made to The Lola Wright. -Grant application is being completed for the Chaparral Women's Club before the 3-28-18 deadline.
