Ching Yao was born in 1954 in
Chiayi County, Taiwan. His birth name
was Hsu Min Hui and graduated from
Edition &Interview Department of Shih
Hsin University. After graduation, being
a police & politic reporter for 5 years
made him a keen observer, keeping a
good relationship with the field as well.
However, In 1970, a fatal car accident
changed his life. As a result, he decided
to renounce the luxury and comforts of
the material world, and lead a monastic
life. In 1982, the venerable master
Kuang Hau shaved Hsu's head and gave
him the Dharma name of Ching Yao (
淨 耀 ). Besides, he was a disciple of
contemporary and venerable master Yin
Shun for 03 years.
Well cultivated by both deans,
Master Ching Yao expected himself to
give fresh energy to dharmacakra, and
be able to bring the essence of Buddhism
to every place where his footsteps went.
Hence, there are two goals in Master
Ching Yao’s life.
The first one is “to propagate
Dharma and maintain the right
ordinance”. The emphasis in Buddhism
is not on seeking fame and wealth but
on seeing, knowing and understanding
the Truth, and leading to supreme
enlightenment. This requires that each
individual assume responsibility for his
or her own emancipation.
The other one is “to amplify the
Buddha's sprit “.Wherever he went,
no matter what difficult situations he
encountered, he always promulgated
Humanistic Buddhism to everyone
in society. He is a master with an
overwhelming desire to share his
illumination of humanity, doing
deathbed care and medical service,
counseling the prisoners, promoting
the concept of anti-drugs and doing
charitable work. In all, Master Ching
Yao has no ego or any selfish aims
but ventures out into the world to
each one who is seeking wisdom and
enlightenment.

Ching Yao’s great achievements….
Firstly, Master Ching Yao is the
only person who strides across 3 public
security systems in Taiwan. Over the
past 22 years, Master Ching Yao has
helped those who are suffering in prison
or from drug abuse, which becomes the
stable strength of cultivated function
in prison owning to his Humanistic
Buddhism teaching. Nowadays, he is still
busy in visiting every prison in Taiwan
monthly. There are over 100,000 mantimes
taking benefit from his caring and
teaching.
Secondly, the belief of Master
Ching Yao’s cultivation – The benefit to
cultivate an evil person is larger than
that to cultivate 500 good me, this is
his belief to practice his cultivation
through caring, counseling and teaching
the so-called villains to prevent crime
committing. If we can take care of
the villains more, we will see the
impermanent nature of all things, and
we can then get all advantages for
ourselves and offspring eventually.
Thirdly, set up volunteer work team
for counseling in prison - Since 1986,
master himself not only has worked
towards the mission of prison caring
but also set up volunteer work team for
counseling in The Society Improvement
Foundation and Chinese Buddhist Pu-
Xian Fu Hua Association , both of which
are non-profit organizations.
Fourthly, affirmed by the
Government due to devote him to public
welfare through charitable programs.
Ministry of Interior, Ministry of
Education, Law Service Department and
Health bureau and other government
organizations or associations have given
over 30 awards to Master and the order
since 1993.
Fifthly, to concern about prisoner’s
human rights, rectify a miscarriage
of justice, and care about prisoners’
family members - Quite a few death
penalty prisoners had learned to behave
themselves properly after Master’s
counseling and teaching. Master
dedicated his whole life to rectify many
miscarriages of justice. His mind was set
on finding the ways to comfort every
prisoner and his or her family members
as well. He would talk to them according
to their characteristics and intellectual
faculties, to inspire them step by step
and to alleviate their sufferings. It was at
this point where he decided to become
a different kind of monastic.
Sixthly, to build Pu-Xian Ci-Hai
homeland for misbehaved youth. From
2002 and on, Master Ching Yao was
worried about the unfavorable situation
of misbehaved children and youth who
were lacking of parents’ love or family
members. He decided to change the
situations and used the site for midway
home construction to help them
complete their regular curriculum and
attain their job skills, which will be able
to be used by the end of April this year.
Seventhly, promote the anti-drug
concept through mummeries activities
in every school and community Since
1990, his routine work as a mission has
been to provoke the sense of drug free
to people , by beholding the self-mind,
keeping away from the defilement of
sensual pleasures, the defilement of
heresy, and the defilement of ignorance.
Eighthly, Master spent much of his
time on relief efforts outside of Taiwan
- Since 1991, in respond to the plead
of “Global Anti- Terrorism, Rescue the
People who are in need“,Master has
been active in charitable ventures on a
worldwide basis such as international
disaster assistance, medical aids and
fund raising for Sri Lanka, El Salvador,
India and Mongolia and so on.

in charitable services have grown in

Taiwan, yet few of them concern about
the darkest side of social issues (i.e.
prisoners and drugs abasement) due
to the daunting challenges lying ahead.
Although, Master Ching Yao will still face
many insurmountable difficulties in the
future. However, throughout the years
the accomplishments he has achieved
in Humanistic Buddhism and Cultivation
are magnificent.
