UPM Conveyors designed a
system for automating the
conveying of 15 million bags
of crisps per week from the
production area to the packaging/
despatch at Kolak Snack Foods
in North London.
This involved elevating boxes
from ground level to 4 metres
height through a tunnel over
a service road and declining to
the packing area for palletising.
It incorporated a powered roller
S bend and custom engineered
belt conveyors suitable for food
production to comply with
Health & Safety regulations.
The system has a PLC control
to allow operators in both the
production and packaging areas
to interface with each other
including emergency pull cords
and emergency stops.

Bosch has implemented
a movable peristaltic
pump filling system
for the first time in China
for pharmaceutical
company WuXi AppTec.
The development saw its
existing Bosch FLC 3040
filling machine modified
to handle sensitive liquid
biopharmaceuticals.
The Chinese company
develops and manufactures
biopharmaceutical drugs and
needs flexible production
equipment to process the most
diverse products. At its facility
in Wuxi near Shanghai,
the company uses a Bosch
FLC 3040 filling machine
equipped with a rotary valve
piston pump to fill liquid
pharmaceuticals into vials.
However, when customers
wanted highly sensitive
biological products to be
handled, the company needed
an additional filling solution.
Bosch recommended an
innovative upgrade with a
movable filling solution based
on the trolley FDM 1040, which
can be connected to the FLC
Bosch has installed a new filling system to handle more sensitive products
filling machine with a beta port
for fluid transfer and insertion.
Thanks to the new design,
WuXi Biologics is able to
switch between the existing
piston pump filling station
and the new peristaltic
pump filling system.
The new solution is based
on fully replaceable tubing
in combination with PreVAS,
a disposable filling system,
and enables WuXi Biologics
to fill monoclonal antibodies
in a gentle manner without
coming into contact with
the pump components.
The rotating rollers inside
of the pump push the product
through the tubing and to
the filling positions.
The disposable filling system
gives WuXi Biologics the
possibility to choose. The
company is able to use both
filling systems according to
different product requirements
to handle smaller batches and
product changeovers in a safe,
economic and flexible way.

Conveying machine breakdown at Belgian crisp producer
was restored overnight to avoid costly machine downtime
Gough Engineering has
recently restored the
production line of Belgian
food manufacturer Roger
& Roger in quick time.
The company did not have
a required part in stock which
brought their production
line to a halt, but Gough
Engineering’s parts and
service team ensured that the
part was delivered by the next
morning, allowing production
to continue unhindered.
Roger & Roger, a potato
and corn snack manufacturer
with factories across Europe,
had a conveying machine
breakdown in the evening and
immediately contacted Gough
for its help in resolving the
costly breakdown. Members
of the parts and service team
from the conveying and
bucket elevator specialist
located the required part and
arranged for a local haulier
to take the part to Belgium,
which arrived at 7am the
next day.
