www.machineryupdate.co.uk MARCH/APRIL <strong>2018</strong> MACHINERY UPDATE 59 Feature: Ready meals Pack developments are challenging machine flexibility The growth in popularity of skin packs and other new formats for ready meals and ready-to-cook foods, such as MAP gas flushing and vacuum MAP sealing, is creating additional challenges for equipment suppliers, says Tony Burgess of Proseal. Such developments have led to many manufacturers experimenting with pack formats, particularly for new products. At the same time it is imperative that, while exploring these options, they are still able to maintain current production needs. In addition, the proliferation of new products means many manufacturers now have to be able to handle a variety of different packs on their lines. Machinery suppliers therefore need to be able to respond quickly to both current and future packing trends. For tray sealers, this requires an element of futureproofing in the development of new tray equipment, so that food manufacturers have the reassurance of knowing that they will have the capability to handle the latest packing trend without the need to invest in new kit every time. EASY PRODUCT SWITCHES Proseal’s latest models, for example, can handle all of the above-mentioned sealing formats, and these options can be added at any time, and even removed if required. “This gives manufacturers the flexibility easily to switch between packs during normal production, or to run trial packs,” says Burgess. In addition, as we develop new features in line with market requirements, we ensure that these can also be retrofitted to models already in operation on the production floor, he says. Meanwhile, the availability of online monitoring of equipment and the ability to collect data on small but unscheduled line stoppages can help production managers and engineers identify recurring problems and implement corrective action to maximise line uptime FULLY INTEGRATED LINES Both of these developments also underline the importance of developing fully integrated packing lines, where individual pieces of equipment are linked together to help maximise efficiencies. As part of this, modular conveyor designs allow individual sections of the infeed and outfeed conveyors to be removed for maintenance and cleaning, helping to maximise hygiene and avoid unnecessary or unplanned downtime throughout the line. Similarly the availability of cartridge tool systems enables any tool to be quickly and easily removed from a tray sealer and replaced in the event of a problem. All the elements that might need attention are contained within the cartridge, meaning repairs and adjustments can be carried out offline while the tray sealer continues to operate, thus ensuring that downtime is minimised and overall throughput maintained.
