Peterbilt introduces new 

Model 579 UltraLoft with 

spacious interior, aerodynamic 

improvements 

The announcement of the new model came 

during Peterbilt’s annual dealer meeting. 

The UltraLoft offers drivers an integral cab 

and sleeper design for Peterbilt’s flagship onhighway 

Model 579 that provides the ultimate

collaboration with customers and drivers. The 

UltraLoft delivers a premium environment 

while maintaining the distinctive Peterbilt style.

new home away from home.” 

The driver experience was the key factor in 

designing the new UltraLoft, Quinn said, adding 

that the new sleeper model includes industryleading 

storage and comfort. 

The UltraLoft gives drivers the largest upper 

level of driver comfort and the distinctive style 

and quality Peterbilt is known for, according to 

Kyle Quinn, Peterbilt general manager. 

“The Model 579 has been a huge success for 

our on-highway customers, and today Peterbilt 

is taking it to the next level,” Quinn said. “The 

UltraLoft was designed and tested in close 

and lower bunk mattresses, best-in-class 

headroom in both bunks and some creature 

comforts of home with space to accommodate 

the industry’s largest microwave and enough 

room to fit in a 32-inch flat screen TV, Quinn 

said. 

“Peterbilt’s customers have been asking for 


a product that maximizes the space available 

in the cab, and the UltraLoft delivers on that 

request. This makes it an ideal truck for team 

drivers, training scenarios and customers that 

want to maximize aerodynamic performance 

and driver comfort,” said Robert Woodall, 

assistant general manager, sales and marketing. 

“The first customers to see and test the UltraLoft 

have provided overwhelming excitement and 

requested the first available production models.” 

The improvements are not limited to the 

driver experience, Woodall said, noting that 

the UltraLoft provides an estimated 2-percent 

aerodynamic improvement to push the limits of 

efficiency even further while maintaining the 

styling and bold look of the Model 579. 

“Throughout the design process we asked 

ourselves, what is best for the drivers to be the 

most comfortable and productive? So, we added 

headroom, storage and improved the overall 

space to maximize the driver’s experience,” said 

Scott Newhouse, chief engineer. “The expansive 

loft style space, the increase in efficiency and 

the reduction in overall tractor weight are a 

testament to the team’s focus on maximizing the 

driver experience.” 

The 579 UltraLoft is available for order 

now and production scheduled to begin in the 

summer.

Hornday Trans Offers New 

Guaranteed Pay Program 

Hornady Transportation LLC, a Daseke 

company, has announced a new pay program 

designed to protect driver pay. With this new 

pay program, drivers will have the opportunity 

to receive a guaranteed weekly gross minimum 

pay. 

The pay program, which started March 6, 

applies to all Linehaul 1 and 2 drivers and 

protects them by providing a guaranteed weekly 

gross minimum pay determined by their pay 

bracket. Drivers who earn 46-50 cents per mile 

will be guaranteed $1,000 per week; those who 

earn 52 and 53 cents per mile will be guaranteed 

$1,100 per week; and drivers earning 54-56 

cents per mile will be guaranteed $1,200 per 

week. In addition to the guaranteed weekly 

pay, Hornady Transportation will also prorate 

holiday weeks. 

Under this new program, drivers are 

guaranteed pay increases as pay-per-mile 

increases. This new pay increase also protects 

drivers from industry related influences that are 

out of their control.

TMW MAKES MAINTENANCE SOFTWARE 

AVAILABLE TO SMALLER CARRIERS

It’s no secret that 

computer software has 

taken over much of the 

business world and the 

trucking industry is no exception. 

Mobile communications, dispatching 

and routing, tracking, billing, 

safety, payroll and even vehicle 

maintenance are just some of 

the industry segments controlled 

by computer. For years, TMW has offered 

software and services in these areas 

and more to the transportation services 

industry. 

The latest TMW introduction is TMTRx, 

a fleet maintenance solution for customers 

of Innovative Access and Access Plus 

transportation management platforms. The 

software supplements the current TMT 

Solutions software currently provided by 

TMW, but requires a much smaller initial 

investment than the current offering. The 

lower cost-of-entry and monthly billing 

features of TMTRx call allow small to midsized 

carriers, and their drivers, to benefit 

from the same management solutions that 

have previously been within the reach of 

larger carriers. 

Innovative Computing Corporation 

became a part of the TMW family in 2009. 

Carrier clients utilize the management 

platforms to dispatch fleets and more. The 

TMTRx product adds fleet maintenance 

management to the 

list with an easy-toimplement, 

affordable 

solution.

integrated with core dispatch and accounting 

functions of Innovative Access and

As a “Software-as-a-Service product, 

TMTRx is licensed to carriers that need 

better access to maintenance information. 

Dispatchers have visibility to the maintenance 

status of units, whether it be an active 

repair order, an inspection, scheduled 

preventive maintenance (PM) or repairs. 

This visibility helps prevent dispatch of 

equipment that is in need of maintenance 

attention. Units in need of repair or other 

maintenance work can be efficiently routed 

to carrier or vendor facilities, saving time 

and getting the unit and driver back on 

the road quickly. The carrier can create 

custom alerts and notifications to ensure 

compliance with company processes 

and policies. For example, if the carrier’s 

policy is to perform a PM at 50,000 miles, 

dispatchers and managers can be alerted 

as the tractor approaches the mileage and 

the unit can be scheduled for the process 

when due. 

Maintenance staff can also be alerted, 

for example, to limit vendor costs for a procedure 

or to perform additional tasks when 

the tractor is in a company shop, such as 

inspecting brake linings or checking tire 

tread depth. 

The Shop Floor Automation Module 

helps fleets create a paperless workflow 

where supervisors 

can assign repair 

orders to technicians, 

and when the technician 

logs into TMTRx. 

The solution presents 

a worklist and 

automatically tracks 

labor throughout the 

workday and any 

parts attached to the 

repair order. 

The Road Call 

Module allows fleets 

to efficiently manage road call breakdowns 

and link the road call to a repair order. 

The Invoicing Module allows fleets to bill 

repairs performed for internal customers 

such as owner-operators. Driver settlement 

deductions can be set up using the 

integration with Access Plus. 

Two additional modules are available 

for owners of Navistar or Volvo equipment 

to automatically export warranty claims 

and parts purchase orders directly to the 

manufacturer. 

The software solution works with both 

“green screen” computer displays and 

Windows-based point-and-click operating 

systems, using a computer and Internet 

connection. 

In addition to the long-haul trucking industry, 

TMW also serves broker and thirdparty 

logistics providers in energy and fuel 

distribution, waste management, ready-mix 

and construction, and dedicated fleets. 

With headquarters in Mayfield Heights, 

Ohio, the company has offices in five U.S. 

states as well as Canada and Australia. 


Trucker Jeremy Brown loves that no 2 days are same; keeps 

driving to support mom, kids

Every day is a new story for trucker 

Jeremy Brown. Driving the lower 48 for 

almost two years, the 34-year-old said no 

two days are the same. 

“Every day you drive your truck is a 

different story, a different event. Things 

happen differently going state to state; 

it might be raining here, it could be 

snowing there, that’s just trucking life,” 

he said. 

Brown, a native of White Hall, Arkansas, 

and a father of three, hauls general 

freight with a 2013 Freightliner Cascadia 

for CSQT in Little Rock, Arkansas. New 

to the company, Brown said he was optimistic 

that he’d found a good employer after a handful 

of tough breaks in the past. 

“All the big companies lie to you. They can sell 

you a dream, then they get you in there and it’s 

something totally different than what they told 

you,” he said. “… Suppose I’m making 50 cents 

a mile. That’s $500 for every thousand miles I 

run. Well, if I’m only getting a thousand miles a 

week, I’m still not making any money … that’s 

truck driving 101.” 

Brown said he’s worked as a Certified Nursing 

Assistant and security guard, and still keeps the 

needed requirements and licensing up-todate 

just in case trucking does not work out. 

“I just like traveling. As far as me driving 

the truck, I like being my own boss to a 

certain extent,” Brown said. 

A memorable stop while delivering a 

load to California was in 2015, when he 

got to spend time in Las Vegas during 

Thanksgiving weekend. 

“They have shows in Vegas and a lot of 


nightlife stuff to do, depending on what kind of 

person you are. But everybody goes to Vegas 

to gamble,” Brown said, adding he saw Penn & 

Teller’s magic show. “It’s just like on TV. They 

do the magic and all that crazy stuff.” 

Even though there are light moments, there 

are dark realities of working on the road. He 

“I just like traveling. As far as me driving 

the truck, I like being my own boss 

to a certain extent,” 

said he sees “a lot of accidents, a lot of death,” 

particularly driving through big cities like Los 

Angeles, Chicago and Miami. Brown said he’s 

never had an accident, speeding or weight scale 

tickets. 

“Just be aware of what state you’re in, the 

weather conditions, keep your following 

distance. Overall, just be safe, make wide turns, 

just obey the law,” he said. 

Though still new to the trucking industry, 

Brown has dealt with everything from selfish 

companies and fellow drivers to racism. 

“I believe in universal laws, I believe in reaping 

and sowing, you have to give to receive,” 

he said. “I’m just an old country boy from 

Arkansas, I was raised on principles … karma is 

karma, it’ll come back.” 

When he’s at home, usually about three to four 

days after being on the road for a month, life is 

focused on his family. 

“I spend time with my 

mother. I’m familyorientated. 

I spend time 

with my mom, my sister, 

the people that are close 

to me and my family,” 

Brown said. “I talk to my 

mom every day — when 

I wake up, when I eat 

and when I go to sleep, 

three times a day. Jerlean 

Brown, 70, had two 

strokes in 2015 and is 

still on a feeding tube to 

this day. She’s the reason 

I’m out here,” along with 

supporting his children, 

he said. “My dad passed 

away when I was 15, so 

that’s all I really got.” 

Brown said he’s not sure about his future in 

trucking, but if he stays, he hopes to be an 

owner-operator one day, which is his best 

advice for new drivers. 

“Save your money, buy your own truck, get your 

own authority. That’s the only way out,” Brown 

said. “That’s what I’m trying to do now. Bypass 

the middle man. That’s the only way you’re 

going to make money.”
