TOMORROW NIGHT’S match
between the Hurricanes and the
Sharks in Napier will be the last
match at McLean Park before the
excavators move in to rebuild the
oval.
Nominally a home match
for the Hurricanes, it is the last
match at McLean Park before
it gets a new drainage system, a
drop-in cricket block and a new
hybrid turf.
The Hurricanes travelled
to Melbourne over Easter to
hammer hosts and surprise early
competition leaders the Rebels
50-19, while the Natal-based
Sharks walloped the hapless
Blues 63-40 in Auckland.
The Hurricanes scored seven
tries and the Sharks six, pointing
to the likelihood of try-fest in
Napier similar to the highly
entertaining last two Hurricanes
matches at the park – a 56-21
win over the Brumbies last
year and a 56-20 win over the
Highlanders in 2015.
With the Rebels on a bye this
week, a win for the Hurricanes
will put them into the
competition lead.
They have overtaken the
Crusaders as TAB favourites to
win the competition, and are hot
favourites to win on Friday.
With fine weather forecast
during Friday and a mild night
with a light wind, the Hawkes
Bay Rugby Union is hoping that,
with covered seating almost sold
out, the match will fill the Morris
St embankment, and create
possibly the biggest crowd for
any sports event in Hawkes Bay
this year.
Last month Hawkes Bay
Rugby Union chief executive
Jay Campbell said sales for the
match were more than 1000 up
in comparison with the build-up
to last year’s clash between the
Hurricanes and Brumbies. He
said such high-scoring matches
attracted the public and were
well remembered. “I think the
crowd last year was about 12,000.
On the way we’re tracking, it
could be more than that.”
Crowd capacity without
extra seating but with the
embankment filled is more than
15,000, a figure which could be
approached if the weather plays
its part.
kick off at 9.40am (NZ time).
