About Ink<br />

Tattoos are a popular personal decoration and New Zealanders<br />

are among the most “inked” in the world. Tattoos range from<br />

distinctive patterns of cultural significance, a small discreet motif<br />

or an elaborate blend of colours and shapes that is meaningful to you.<br />

While tattoos are generally an accepted style of personal expression and<br />

decoration, when it comes to weddings, they can be quite controversial and<br />

confronting for families and guests. Although you shouldn’t let the opinions<br />

of others determine your preferences at your own wedding, brides often face a<br />

dilemma as to whether to show them or hide them.<br />

Hiding Them<br />

If you decide to hide your ink for your wedding you can either choose a<br />

gown design that covers them or invest in a make-up like “derma-blend”. The<br />

cosmetic was developed to cover scars and skin discolourations like birth<br />

marks, but its high-coverage ability has also made it popular among those with<br />

tattoos they wish to disguise.<br />

Like almost any trend, fashions come and go, so it is probable that tattoos<br />

will too. Your wedding photos will be looked at for years to come and by<br />

future generations. Consider whether you would later regret either showing<br />

them or hiding them before you make the choice. You can also compromise<br />

if you are unsure whether to show or hide your ink, by covering them for the<br />

ceremony and in some of the photos, then revealing them at the reception.<br />

Adding to Them<br />

If both you and your partner are “ink<br />

lovers” then an event like a wedding is often<br />

an opportunity to mark the occasion with<br />

a “his and hers” tattoo. It may be the date<br />

of the marriage, you could have tattooed<br />

wedding rings as a permanent reminder, or<br />

a larger scale design with significance for<br />

you both.<br />

Showing Them<br />

Your tattoos are already an accessory, often<br />

a bold one, so it is important to choose a<br />

gown that won’t clash and become visually<br />

distracting. Consider a custom-made gown<br />

that is designed to show it off with attention<br />

to necklines, sleeves, etc. Choose a fabric<br />

with solid colour and avoid too many<br />

textures and embellishments on the dress so<br />

that the tattoos are the focus.<br />

Don’t be afraid to veer away from<br />

traditional bridal colours or styles, perhaps<br />

pick a dress colour that tones with something<br />

in your tattoo design. A white gown is often<br />

too stark against coloured tattoos, while<br />

black or dark ink designs can look dirty<br />

against bright white and in the photos. If<br />

you do want to display your tattoos to best<br />

advantage in your photos, put a light layer<br />

of Vaseline on them before the ceremony so<br />

their colours look clear and bright in<br />
