KOWIE
STRIDERS
CONGRATULATIONS to
our two Argus Cycle
competitors, Lyn
Harbrecht who cycled it
in 4 hours 21 minutes
and Dudley Emslie who
finished in 4:33.
For a change there
were no gale force winds
during the Argus race.
Carol and Jean
Nepgen were back on
the roads again last
weekend. They competed
in the Bobbies 3-in-1 in
Pretoria on Saturday
where Carol walked the
21km in 2:53 and Jean
the 10km in 1:59.
Then on Sunday at the
Edenvale 42/21 in
Johannesburg, Carol
completed the 21km in
3:04 and Jean the 10km
in 2:01.
It is great to see the
increasing attendance at
our time trials with lots
of new personal bests
being achieved. Seems
to be getting quite
competitive.
Please don’t forget the
Amanzi Easter trail run
which we are organising.
We need your help.
Enjoy your
LAST Saturday was very busy with 19 players
turning up.
The next rollover will be held on Wednesday
March 21. Bear in mind that the cut-off date for
Allan Wilson entries is March 29. Noeline has a
lot of work in front of her, hence the early cut-off
date. Birthday greetings are due to Helmut for
today, Thursday March 15.
THREE of our ladies teams participated
last week in the Kowie Ladies Classic –
we thank Kowie for a most enjoyable
two days!
Trevor Frost and Graham Enslin are
away in Durban playing in the Senior
Inter-District Tournament where they are
representing Eastern Province. We wish
them good bowling.
Please don’t forget to enter the
Hospice Charity Day being played at Port
Alfred on Wednesday March 21. All
bowlers in Eastern Areas (EA) are
welcome to enter as individuals. Help us
to support this wonderful cause.
The Vroom Cup and Timm Cup will be
played at Kowie on Thursday March 22.
The EA Mixed Pairs will be played at
Grahamstown and Albany on Saturday
It was a quiet week at the club as
most of the action was outside our
borders. On Wednesday and Thursday
two of our ladies’ teams travelled to
Kowie for their annual Ladies’ Classic.
Di Gruneberg and her team (Pam
Bowker, Rose Chowles and Gloria
Schmidt) managed a creditable third
place and were rewarded with prize
money of R500 each.
Friday night’s attendance draw (which
had reverted to R500) was forfeited by
Emily Bellingan for not being present
when her number was called.
Dave West skipped a team (Rodney
Austin and Tony Phillips) to Molteno’s
annual classic. Although not finishing in
the prize money, they were well pleased
with the dry wors and brandy they won
in the minor placings.
The highlight of the week was the
introduction of a club championship
weekend. Thirteen teams had entered
the Selected Mixed Pairs Championship
which was to be completed over one
weekend. The first rounds were played
on Saturday morning with the final on
the Sunday afternoon. The duo of Di
Gruneberg and Tim Bradbury are this
year’s Selected Mixed Pairs champions
after beating Ruth Low and Ken Nixon in
a thrilling final. They managed to wipe
out a deficit of shots after 15 ends to win
with a final score of 21-15. A supportive
crowd of about 20 spectators were
treated to some high quality bowling.
Saturday evening’s after bowls bring’n
braai (fires by the courtesy of
Braaimeester Stompie Bellingan) was
enjoyed by all with Helen van
Schalkwyk’s pot-bread being the toast of
the evening (pardon the pun).
FIRST PLACE: Jeffreys Bay ladies, from left, Lorette Wewege, Jacqui van Heerden, lead Elsa Grobler and skip
Barbara Coetzee, came first in the Jean Louw Ladies’ Classic at the Kowie Bowls Club last Thursday, with main
sponsors Dr Charles Louw and daughter Anne, and ladies’ captain Margaret Stegmann, right
... what’s happening
The championship weekend was an
experiment and the committee will
debate the desirability to continue with
the initiative and what needs to be done
to improve it. Any suggestions from our
members will be appreciated.
Kowie Bowling Club
Our ladies have done it again .
With Margaret Stegman at the helm (I
would not like to pay her telephone bill)
our ladies staged another Jean Louw
Classic commensurate with the high
standards set by the 27 classics which
preceded this one.
Where Jean Louw’s vision of a classic
differed from the usual was that while
our visitors could expect consistency
and predictability on the greens it was
inside the clubhouse that they could
expect the unexpected. The theme, the
décor, the flowers, and especially, the
food had to be pleasing to the senses
and different every year.
The yardstick by which the
tournament was measured was whether
even those who were not in the main
prizes were adamant that they had
enjoyed themselves so much that they
would be returning next year.
Margaret’s Classic met all these
criteria admirably – thank you to all of
you. Although the rain – or the threat
thereof – was an irritation it did not
influence the standard of play and in the
final stages we saw some very good
bowls.
The winning teams were: 1 – Barbara
Coetzee, 2 – Lolly Reed 3 – Gloria
Schmidt, 4 – Moira Buchanan, 5 –
Sheila Prevost, and 6 – Maureen
Freeman (her 26th visit).
Our mega-bucks on Tuesday was well
attended and played on C green. Johnty
Alexander, Don Munro, and George
Andrews picked up a full house of 10
plus 14 much to the chagrin of the
graders who feel it is a reflection on
them if a team picks up a full house
when the two sides are supposed to be
of equal strength. Anyway the grades are
being revised and a few wings will be
clipped.
Friday night we resumed the night
bowls and what a night it was. It was
almost as if they had not seen one
another for some time. Thanks to the
Lions and our members who continue to
cater for the inner man and ensure the
smooth running of the tournament.
During the week our Men’s Singles
continued unabated but due to the
ladies’ classic Linda had to postpone
some of the ladiesl matches into next
week.
With a record entry in the open, Steve
Minnaar had to use all his organisational
skills to cajole players and markers into
fulfilling their fixtures. On Saturday some
of our “juniors” had a field day
against their more experienced
opponents but after the initial
carnage sanity prevailed and we
ended up on Saturday night with the
most experienced quarter-finalists..
On Sunday we were treated to some
excellent bowls. Eric Kent (coming off
the veld) eliminated Jacques Krige in a
tight game but then lost to Dick
Schuurman on his way to the final. In the
meantime Chris Avis disposed of Keith
Kolesky to reach the final.
The final was a bit of an anti-climax.
Perhaps a third game against a much
younger opponent was a big ask for
Dick. Chris took charge immediately with
a four and was never headed. He won
21-10. Well done Chris, we are all proud
of you.
The Men’s Senior singles and all the
Ladies’ Singles still have to be decided.
It is almost a pity the singles are just
about over. It is always a joy to watch
the cut and thrust of a game of singles
between two doughty opponents.
The “oorskiets” from the singles
played on C green and had an enjoyable
af ternoon.
Stan Richter, Don Munro, and Mirelle
McPhee could do no wrong and ran out
easy winners on the green and then
made off with a substantial “snowball”.
After all this activity the greens look a
bit “tired” which does not auger well for
the EP greens inspection this week.
THE third round of the Pick n Pay Night
Bowls competition got underway on Friday
evening in beautiful weather after the rain
of the previous two Fridays where one was
actually rained-out.
In Round two teams shared the
“Performer of the Night” prize because of
their same scores. Section A, DP
Engineering and Section B, Pig and Whistle
with their big wins of six points plus 21
shot profit. The swindle board raffle was
won by Chris from Pig and Whistle team
and the roll-over competition was won by
Chris Roberts Construction who they were
not in attendance at the last two
prize-giving.
Round 3 prize-giving started with the
swindle board raffle being drawn and CM
Heunis won the bottle of whisky on a team
ticket. Next the roll-over competition was
drawn and the score for the four ends was
“one” and, as happens, there were four
teams with a score of one for the night so
the prize money rolls over to next round
which makes the next rounds prize R120.
“Performer of the Night” was handed out
to the winners of the third round for their
win of six points and shot profit of 13.
“Lions do a wonderful job of keeping the
hunger pangs at bay with the sale of their
fast foods from the pavilion and the music
belting out over the greens,” event
convenor Mike Tomlinson said.
“There is no banning on the Lions’ disc
jockey, as with the St George’s Park band
who were apparently bothering the umpires
[during the second test against Australia].
“The fourth round is scheduled for Friday
March 16, so see you all there and bring
the family and friends along for a
wonderful social evening around the
greens.”
