PA SPORTS FESTIVAL
BOOSTS ECONOMY
Plans to
expand
next year
LOUISE KNOWLES
IT HAS been a very busy and eventful
week in Port Alfred, with the Royal St
Andrews Hotel Amanzi Festival
having started on the Easter weekend
and concluding on Sunday.
Residents – and holidaymakers –
may have noticed the jet skis and
rubber ducks racing along East Beach
and in the Kowie River.
Early on Good Friday if residents
were up and about, they might have
seen athletes running the 8km trail
run that set off at the Royal Port
Alfred Golf Course, winding on and
off West Beach, before ending at the
Royal St Andrews Hotel.
Another well-known event, which
has grown from 33 entrants last year
to 50 this year, is the Marina Mile.
With its starting point from behind
the Halyards, participants s wa m
through a Royal Alfred Marina canal
to the small boat harbour on the
Kowie River. The NSRI and water
police boat on standby, ensured
safety was paramount.
There was also fun for children with
games, activities and competitions at
Kiddies Beach continuing all week,
with childminders in attendance at
the jumping castles.
At the prize-giving, which was held
on Sunday night for the motor sport
and bodyboarding events, the local
organiser, Zwelinzima “Sxeaks”
Nkwinti, said next year they are
planning to have all the sporting
events endorsed by national – and
possibly international bodies.
“People on the Garden Route get to
the Tsitsikamma and parachute over
the Sunshine Coast to the South
C o a st , ” joked Nkwinti, who wants to
put the Sunshine Coast on the map
using sports tourism as a vehicle.
co-ordinator Zwelinzima ‘Sxeaks’ Nkwinti at the launch of the Royal St Andrews Hotel Amanzi Festival
This year the bodyboarding event
was held under the auspices of the
Association of Professional
Bodyboarding (APB). This weekend’s
surfing will fall under the banner of
the World Surf League. These are
both international organisations.
“The advantage of having national
or international endorsement, is that
athletes will want to come to Port
Alfred in order to earn points to
progress to the next level,” Nkwinti
said.
Eastern Cape Athletics endorsed
the trail run and the rubber ducks
races were also endorsed by Border
Inflatable Boats Club.
“Next year we will hopefully be
organising the race under the banner
of the South African Inflatable Racing
A s s o c i at i o n , ” rubber duck organiser,
Mike Hatting, said.
The Marina Mile has a lot of
potential for growth and organisers
Avril Beyleveld and Pierre Coetzer are
hoping to invite triathletes from East
London to next year’s event.
The organiser of the trail run, Sticks
Stiglingh, has also mooted the
possibility of a bicycle race for next
year’s event – and a triathlon is also
on the cards .
Speaking at the launch of the
Amanzi Festival at the Royal St
Andrews Hotel last Friday evening,
Mayor Phindile Faxi said that sports
tourism is important to the local
e c o n o m y.
Guest speaker tourism expert, Peter
Myles, said the staging of the Amanzi
Festival had been good for the hotels,
bed and breakfast establishments
and restaurants, as well as affording
opportunities for entrepreneurs to
provide further employment in the
area. Also speaking at the launch,
main sponsor of the Amanzi Festival,
Royal St Andrews Hotel owner, Martin
Bekker, said all sports on offer should
also have a development division.
This idea formed part of D av i d
Lawson and Zwelinzima Nkwinti’s
vision when they started the Amazing
Events Festival as it was called last
year. “Development is the life-blood of
spor t,” Bekker said.
“It not only improves the spirit of
the community, it also changes the
life of individuals.”
He was referring to Pumlani
Kamanaare who received a standing
ovation at the launch for co-piloting a
rubber duck at the race on Saturday
and Sunday after training with pilot
George Bester, who took him under
his wing at his own expense in
October. Kamanaare had a small open
wound from the footstraps on his
ankle and said he was feeling bruised
and battered. He was crying when
Bekker announced he had deposited
money into his bank account.
“Development sport is also
important to attract more sponsors,”
Bekker said.
Myles said: “However, the obstacle
standing between us and the
development of water sports tourism
in Port Alfred is the pollution of the
oceans.”
The festival ends with the
internationally endorsed surfing
competition at East Beach at the
w e e ke n d .
Residents and holidaymakers are
welcome to come and watch as the
forecast is for 3m high waves which
could provide thrilling entertainment.
Council announces tariff rate increases for the year
ROB KNOWLES
ALTHOUGH virtually nothing was
discussed regarding the draft budget
tabled at the latest Ndlambe council
meeting (the Tabled Budget), held at
the council chambers last Thursday,
the tariff increases were presented
and agreed by the council.
The figures show an increase in
rates of 6.4%, a 6.84% increase on
electricity tariffs as per the National
Energy Regulator, South Africa
(Nersa) guidelines, 5.5% on refuse,
5.5% on sanitation, 5.5% on
sewerage, 5.5% on water tariffs and
5.5% on all other tariffs.
The budget is compiled in several
stages and this, the tabled budget,
after passing through council, acts as
the discussion document taken to the
various wards and constituencies for
comment during the mayoral
i m b ozo s .
The final budget for 2018-19 will
then be passed by council and
implemented.
Still, even given these increases the
deficit to the municipality is
estimated as R101592 419.00 for
operational expenditure. This includes
a proposed 8.5% increase in
municipal worker wages/salaries.
Negotiations on wage rises are
ongoing and have been factored into
the Tabled Budget.
The capital budget has been
reduced to R6000000 and any further
capital equipment purchased would
have to be done by way of grants.
Talk of the Town 3
Christian bikers here to highlight farm killings
JON HOUZET
A GROUP of about 20
Christian bikers
travelling around
South Africa to bring
attention to the
scourge of farm
murders will be
arriving in Alexandria
to deliver letters of
appreciation to the
SAPS, meet with
community members
and farmers unions
and raise awareness
about farm murders.
The group started
their current trip in the
Northern Cape on
and even provincial
commissioners when
possible to deliver
their letters of
appreciation and
express
their
desire for
s a fe
communities.
They
intend to
collect
s i g n at u r e s
from each
provincial
commissioner, to
present along with a
letter to the national
commissioner at the
end of the trip.
“We have managed
to meet with all
provincial
commissioners, except
in the Free State,
where the provincial
commissioner said he
wouldn’t meet with us
and accept our letter.
It was heart-breaking,”
Maré said.
“But the converse
“We have managed to meet with
all provincial commissioners
except in the Free State, where
the provincial commissioner said
he wouldn’t meet with us and
accept our letter. It was
heart-breaking”
was true in the
Northern Cape, where
the provincial
commissioner was
actually travelling with
us. He had a police
escort riding with us
through the province.”
He said the core
group was 18 riders,
but they had been
joined by more riders
in each province for
the duration of their
time in that province,
and by the end of the
trip, about 150 riders
would have taken part.
Maré,
whose
parents
live in
Cannon
Rocks,
said the
group had
a special
m ot i vat i o n
to visit
Alexandria due to the
brutal murder of Riaan
Scheepers in
November last year.
The starting point
for the local leg of the
trip is at Nanaga farm
stall at 2pm on
Sunday, from where
they will ride together
to the NGK Church in
Alexandria.
Any local bikers who
want to take part can
contact Owen Smith
on 083-652-4536 or
Flip Maré on
082-555-5668. It is not
a political ride, so no
flags will be allowed.
“We aim to finish
this advocacy ride
within a year from
when we first started.
We aim to stop on the
weekend of June 8 to
10,” Maré said.
MAN ON A MISSION: Pastor TJ Maré is leading a
group of Christian bikers travelling through the
country to highlight the high rate of farm
murders. They will be in Alexandria on Sunday
APRIL
SPECIAL
on Sunday.
Pastor TJ Maré, from
Nelspruit in
Mpumalanga, said the
group started their
journey around South
Africa in his province
with their first trip from
June 9-11 last year, from
which they got their
name, the 911 Ride.
Since then, they
have travelled through
Limpopo, North West
and the Free State,
visiting police stations
April 2 and were
headed to the Western
Cape on Wednesday
and will enter the
Eastern Cape by the
w e e ke n d .
“We plan to visit
250 police stations on
this trip and will have
travelled 5200km,”
Maré said.
“After the Eastern
Cape, we will end in
Overseas trips and land issues discussed
at latest Ndlambe council meeting
ROB KNOWLES
WITH Stephen Scheepers from the
Auditor General’s office present, the
Ndlambe council held an open
council meeting last Thursday to
present the tabled budget for 2018-19
and discuss other matters.
Land issues
After the council had rejected an
application for a resident to purchase
a small section of redundant land in
Kenton-on-Sea, it went on to approve
the passing of municipally-owned
land to churches.
DA caucus leader Ray Schenk said
that this was hypocritical and could
not understand why a piece of land
the municipality can do nothing with
but still has to maintain could not
have been sold.
“We would make revenue from the
sale, would not have to maintain the
land anymore and it would increase
the value of the applicant’s property
and therefore increase rates revenue
to the municipality,” Schenk said.
Water quality and listeriosis
The figures presented for January
COUNCIL
NOTES
... the municipality’s voice
showed that, of the 22 samples taken
around Ndlambe, all showed 100%
compliance with the SA National
Standards that predetermine drinking
water must have a zero count for
e.coli (which is generally transmitted
through faecal contamination).
However, the figures presented for
February revealed a different story.
Of the 22 new samples taken, only 17
passed with 100% compliance. Of the
three samples tested in Alexandria, for
example, none passed the test. One of
the three samples taken in Bathurst
failed, and one of the two samples
from Kenton also failed.
The difference had council speaker,
Vivian Maphaphu, angry as she
admonished the administration on
not warning residents of the potential
danger. “You have failed dismally in
not letting people know there are
problems,” she said.
On the subject of the recent
listeriosis outbreak that has seen cold
meats being recalled and destroyed
all around the country, DA PR
councillor Khanyisa Daweti said the
municipality had not done enough to
inform residents of the problem or
pointed out which foods to avoid
while the crisis continues.
Bulk water
The beleaguered Amatola Bulk
Water Project also came under the
council’s scrutiny at the meeting with
councillors and municipal
administrators appearing to be at
odds with the items reported.
Initially Amatola Water had
promised several “quick wins” t h at
forecast at the earliest stages of the
project, but these do not seem to
have been achieved. It was also
erroneously stated that Ndlambe, as
the water service authority, had
appointed Amatola Water to the
project. Councillors were quick to
point out that the authority
responsible was actually the
Department of Water and Sanitation,
and not Ndlambe.
ANC PR councillor Monica Mateti
said their hadn’t been any quick wins
on the project since 2011.
“There are pipes lying around
Alexandria and residents are
worried,” she said.
Oversight report on public
accounts
The oversight committee tendered
its report at the council meeting but
concerns were raised that those who
had been found guilty of squandering
municipal funds. Schenk asked why
there was nothing in the report
regarding any action taken against
those who had spent funds irregularly
or without authorisation. There was
no answer from council regarding his
concern.
Security report
The municipal stores, adjacent to
the police station, have been
seemingly under siege in recent
times as items including tools,
vehicle parts, fuel and more has been
taken. The necessity to clamp down
on these blatant thefts was realised
by the council and measures taken to
curb larceny. A report on the current
status was compiled but concerns
were raised that the report did not
appear in the agenda.
Overseas travel
A motion of exigency was
presented to council asking that the
allowance for councillors and officials
currently attending a trip to Germany
be increased as they were only paid
expenses based on the old rates by
the South African Local Government
A s s o c i at i o n .
Schenk said that the trip had not
been approved by council and was
therefore irregular.
Talk of the Town 5
Readers express their views
on EFF attempt to remove
Trollip as NMB’s mayor
TALK of the Town asked its
Facebook readers their
thoughts about the impact of
the EFF’s effort to remove
Athol Trollip as Nelson
Mandela Bay mayor.
People were of different
views, with several pointing to
a racial motivation.
Garth Roux
stated it plainly:
“[Julius] Malema
himself said,
‘because he is
white’.”
C l i f fo r d
M a c ke n z i e
claimed that ANC
officials prioritise
themselves over
voters, whereas
the DA, under the
leadership of
Trollip, had been
governing well.
“If the ANC get back in they
will carry on enriching
themselves instead of their
voters. Athol Trollip has been
working wonders in our city.
‘This will all be lost if these
power-hungry politicians with
no clue of good governance
get back in,” he said.
Thabisile Mgwali’s question
implied that he is not of the
view that Trollip is doing
wonders for the city. “Wo r k i n g
wonders where?” he asked.
He said the reason the EFF
wanted to remove Trollip as
NMB mayor was because
Malema wants Trollip to be
firm on the land expropriation
mat ter.
“Because he is not – the EFF
is therefore not confident in
him” he said.
Mackenzie responded:
“Trollip is firm, the DA is not
against expropriation of land,
but it is against expropriation
without compensation and so
is the rest of the civilised
world. It's an offence to just
take land. How would you feel
if someone walked onto your
property [whether you own it
or not] and told you to get out
because they want it?”
M g wa l i ’s retort was: “There
is nothing civilised about how
land was obtained in South
Africa.”
Norman Josephy said if
Trollip was removed there
would be “regression to
non-existent levels of delivery”.
Beverly Young said:
“Ethnicity aside, Malema is a
sociopathic-narcissist – with
one aim and that is to create
havoc. There is nothing
remotely admirable about him,
and when his sycophants
wake up one day, they will be
yet homeless and starving. He
has focused his spittle at NMB
as it has a white
mayor and has
proved that there
can be well run
cities. If 'colour'
was the only
criteria, and a
person of colour
arrived on the
scene, able to
continue the
amazing results
Trollip has
achieved – we
would all cheer.”
Fr a s e r
Chambers said: “I disagree
somewhat in the Malema
issue ... I think he is rather
smart. He is shouting from the
roof tops and making a noise
over a touchy subject that has
been around since the ’90s, I
think he is doing it to gain
more support.
“However, has anyone
noticed that he is acting the
same way he did when a
member of the ANC? I think
the rumours that were going
about a few years back about
his dismissal from the ANC
are a front, are true.”
OPINION
B i ke r s
ride for
hope
IT is encouraging to hear that a group of
about 20 Christian bikers have been
travelling around South Africa to
highlight the problem of farm murders, and
that they will be in our area this weekend.
There have been spikes of community
concern over farm murders, the most
notable one involving many South Africans
on Black Monday in October last year, but
the issue is pushed to the back of most
people’s minds as we get on with the daily
routine of our lives.
It is only the families who have suffered
brutality and loss of life, and the
communities in which these incidents
happen, who have it at the forefront of their
minds.
The mission and scope of the 911 Ride, as
it is called, was to take their message out
on the road, starting in Mpumalanga and
journeying through all provinces to visit
police stations, community policing
forums, farmers unions and meeting with
ordinary people to talk about the issue.
The message of the 911 Ride is not
confrontational but rather encouraging and
appealing to people’s hearts. With a plan
to visit 250 police stations on their current
trip, they will deliver a letter to each one
expressing their appreciation of the SAPS
and their desire for safe communities in
South Africa.
They also want to collect the signatures
of each provincial commissioner to present
to the national commissioner at the end of
their trip, and have been successful thus
far, except for a disappointing response in
the Free State where the commissioner did
not even want to meet with them or receive
their letter.
Thankfully, that whenever there are
people who disappoint us, there are others
who shine like beacons of goodwill, like the
Northern Cape commissioner who joined
the group of bikers on their trip through his
province and even provided a police escort.
Response from the public has also been
good, with groups of bikers joining the core
group for part of the journey through each
province.
Local riders are expected to join the
group when they come to our area. Any
local bikers who want to join the group
when they travel to Alexandria on Sunday
can contact the numbers provided in our
story on page 3.
Part of their motivation for coming to
Alexandria was because of the brutal
murder of Riaan Scheepers in November
last year – the first time our part of Eastern
Cape was hit by a farm murder in many
years.
We hope that the efforts of the 911 Riders
will help in some way in combatting the
scourge of farm murders.
Estate’s koi pond ‘disgustingly dirty’
I REGULARLY walk with my dog
through the neighbourhood
and I’m proud to be a Port
privilege.
I have also seen many koi
fish in their ponds and what a
beautiful sight. But what a
horrible “surprise” awaited me
pond is disgustingly dirty. The
fish can hardly be seen in the
sludgy water and there are
spider webs all over the pond.
Several times we have asked
the security guards on duty to
report it to their management
and they told us they have, a
few times, but to no avail.
What an unsavoury
advertisement indeed.
I don’t care for the Riverview
Estate itself, I care about the
poor fish in such a filthy,
unsavoury fish pond.
KOI FAN
SON RISEN: Church members gather for an Easter Sunday sunrise service at Kelly’s Beach
Joyful sunrise Easter service
ABOUT 40 people
gathered at Kelly’s
Beach at 6am on
Easter Sunday to
celebrate the
resurrection of the
Lord Jesus Christ.
Ministers and
members from various
congregations came
together for this event.
As they awaited the
dawning of a new day,
Pastor Theo Snyman
(playing his guitar)
and his wife Marinda,
led the folk in hearty
chorus singing. Even
though it was so early,
the enthusiasm and
excitement among
those present was
contagious.
Streaks of sunlight
began to shimmer
over the sea as a
cloud partly hid the
sunrise from view.
Then, the sun rose
in all its brilliance
above the clouds,
bringing warmth and
light to the onlookers.
The rising of the sun
in all of its majesty
and splendour served
as a symbolic
illustration of the
rising of the Son of
God ... triumphant
over death and Hades!
“Early on the first
day of the week
certain women went
down to the tomb
where Jesus had been
laid. They found it
empty! Two angels
appeared to them and
said, ‘Why do you look
for the living among
the dead? He is not
here; he has risen!’”
fundraiser
THE management and staff of
Sunshine Coast Hospice thank
Brian Waddington and the Port
Alfred Bowling Club for hosting
a very successful fundraiser.
A great deal of planning and
preparation goes into
organising an event such as
this and the hospice said they
were extremely grateful to Brian
and his team of kind volunteers
for all their hard work, as well
as the 72 players who took part.
The winners of the
competition were Dennis Stirk,
Phyl Taylor, Leonie de Villiers
and Lynn Preston.
Special thanks went to
Vernon and Louise Cloete from
Vernon Cloete Investment
Service for their sponsorship for
the second successive year, as
well as raffle winner David
Pawson, who kindly donated his
prize money back to hospice.
MADE BY ME: Amelia Downey handmade this bag
for her sister at #upcycle Port Alfred on a mini
“learn to sew” course. The bag has two zip
p o c ke t s . She hand-painted the owl detail. All of
the fabrics used were remnants or rejects. The
braid and owl buttons were donated and 98% of
the project was done without a sewing machine
#upcycle project
boosts team spirit
MANY years ago women and children sewed
together as they shared their skills and
passions with each other.
This “o l d - fa s h i o n e d ” support seems to be
lacking in today’s society where many mothers
feel isolated. Young people of both genders
wanting to learn how to sew/knit etc, are
limited by what their parents are able to teach
them and, of course, time is a challenge for
most parents.
#upcycle Port Alfred operates on an oldfashioned
system. No money is charged for
lessons –it runs on “fa i t h ”. If you are looking for
a place to collaborate once a week or, if you
would like to donate your time to teaching
others or if you have old buttons/thread/
fabrics/paints (even sewing machines) and you
would like to donate to the project, please
From delivering post
to beer collecting
BOB FORD
FROM being a postman
with Royal Mail in
England to owning
three properties in the
United Kingdom and
one in Port Alfred is the
success story of
popular local resident,
Roy Bushell.
But it has been a
long, hard struggle to
achieve this.
Born in Zambia, but
brought up in
Bulawayo in Zimbabwe,
Bushell first made his
mark in life as a golfer
at a tender age.
During his teen
years, he represented
the then Southern
Rhodesian junior team
for two years,
captaining the side in
his last year, playing off
a scratch handicap.
During those years,
he played alongside
the famous Nick Price,
when he won the world
junior championships.
After leaving school,
Bushell fought in the
bush war in Zimbabwe,
where he served in the
army’s artillery
regiment.
Once the war ended
and Robert Mugabe
had taken over the
country, Bushell moved
to South Africa, where
he worked for several
years until he was
retrenched. He then
had to make a decision,
and moved to England
on an Irish passport and
without much money or
qualifications, in 2004.
“I heard one could
make good money by
working for Royal Mail
provided you were
prepared to work hard,”
he said.
So he applied
successfully for a
postman ’s position in
Swindon, Wiltshire, and
spent the next nine
years delivering post to
up to 1000 properties a
d ay.
He explained that
there were plenty of
opportunities to work
overtime and he took
advantage of this to
“make as many extra
pounds as possible”.
His days started at
5am and he often
worked for up to 11
hours on a shift,
covering up to 12km
come rain, hail or
snow. The bag he
carried weighed up to
16kg and he would
deliver up to 12 of
these in a day.
Ironically, there were
many South Africans
and Zimbabweans
living on his daily route
MEMORABILIA: Roy Bushell, who worked as a postman in Britain for
almost nine years. He is seen here with one of a set of four volumes written
by Sir Winston Churchill on the Great War
Picture: BOB FORD
in Swindon and he
befriended many of
them.
Traditionally, as is
the case of all postmen
throughout the world,
his biggest curse on
his rounds was getting
past residents’ dogs.
“I remember having
a close call with an
Alsatian and a pack of
five Jack Russells –
they were the smallest,
but the most vicious,”
he smiled.
Meanwhile, through
sheer hard work and
saving, Bushell had
built up sufficient
funds to buy three
houses in England. But
by 2013, he and his
wife, Lee-Anne had had
enough and wanted to
return to South Africa.
They sold one of their
properties and settled
in Port Alfred because
they liked the town and
its friendly people.
“We haven’t looked
back since then,” he
said.
His wife joined a
local estate agency and
Bushell got the spinoff
from this as he often
did repairs and
maintenance on
houses that were on
the market. He still
does so t o d ay.
For the past 20
years, Bushell’s hobby
has been to gather old
collectables and
military memorabilia
for pubs he has always
had in his various
homes.
Now, finally settled
in Port Alfred and able
to concentrate on this
seriously, he has built
himself a pub in his
Smith Street home that
most men would die
fo r.
Here he has been
able to display his
thousands of items,
many of which have a
story to tell. He has
concentrated on
collecting beer bottles
(all still unopened),
caps and ties.
He estimates that he
has about 300 bottles
of beer from all parts of
the world including
China, Singapore,
America, Canada,
South America and
most of the European
count ries.
Perhaps, the most
special and unusual
one he has in his
collection comes all the
way from Katmandu in
the Himalayas.
He also has a bottle
of Lion beer brewed in
1974 especially to
celebrate 150 years of
Lion Lager in South
Africa. All bottles still
have their original
labels.
Over and above
these, his library of
books, all hard cover,
amount to some 2500
and are mainly
autobiographies.
Among these are a
set of four written by
the famous British
prime minister, Sir
Winston Churchill, on
the Great War. He said
he bought these at a
car boot sale while still
in England, for the
princely sum on £10.
He has since been
offered R18000 unseen
by an antique dealer.
Understanding your
medical aid scheme
annual fees tax credit
UNLESS you are an accountant, it
can be difficult to wrap your mind
around tax – the calculation for
your medical scheme tax rebate
has many facets to it, so let’s look
at the basic breakdown and see if
we can unpack this benefit.
First up, we have the Medical
Scheme
Fees Tax
Credit or
in short,
M TC .
MTC is
a rebate
which
reduces
the normal tax rate that an
individual would pay, effectively it
replaced part of the tax deduction
that was allowed for medical
scheme contributions with an aim
to bring about some fairness and
an equality in the treatment of
medical expenses across all
income groups. This is a fixed
amount per person, which
increases according to the
number of dependants you have
on your medical aid.
For the period March 1 2017 to
February 28 2018, the taxpayer
who pays the medical scheme
premium will be able to claim
R303 for himself, R303 for the
first dependant and R204 per
dependant thereafter.
So, for an average family of
four, this would mean a tax credit
of R1014 per month.
Heading into the 2018-19 year of
assessment, this will increase to
R310 for the taxpayer, R310 for the
first dependant and R209 per
additional dependant thereafter –
our family of four for the period of
March 1 2018 – February 28 2019
will receive a R1038 per month
tax credit.
MTC impacts employers and
employees, as the credit must be
considered by the employer when
calculating the amount of tax to
be deducted from the employees’
remuneration. Individuals can
claim the MTC when they submit
their annual income tax return.
The next part of the calculation
is to claim for medical expenses –
this is known as the Additional
Medical Expenses Tax credit or
AMTC. AMTC is a rebate given in
addition to MTC.
Simply, this deals with the
amounts paid for medical
expenses
for you and
your
dependants
‘out of
p o c ke t ’
and not
recovered
from your
medical scheme. The calculation
is a little tricky and does depend
on a person’s age and whether
they, or any of their dependants
have a disability. There are really
two categories here;
A person who is 65 years of age
or older, along with a person who
is, or has a spouse or child
dependant with a disability, would
be able to claim:
●33.3% of the fees paid (as
exceeds three times the amount
of MTC to which the person is
entitled);
●Plus 33.3% of the qualifying
medical expenses which were
paid out of pocket.
For everyone else, we add the
following together;
●All contributions paid to the
registered medical scheme for
the individual and dependants
as exceeds four times the
amount of MTC the person is
entitled to;
●Plus, the actual qualifying
medical expenses paid and not
recovered.
Once this is done, we calculate
the amount above 7.5% of the
taxable income – 25% of this sum
is then claimable.
As always, there are protocols
involved, if you are uncertain of
what your benefits currently are
or would like assistance in
understanding how this impacts
you directly then please get in
Catch up with what’s happening on the PA business front
Now is the time to invest
AS COMMONLY known,
most, or all investment
funds go through cycles of
gains or losses.
These are normally
caused by external factors
that are beyond our
cont rol.
Thus timing your
investments can be
exceptionally important
and will mostly be rather
difficult for any novice to
know the difference.
An elderly Jewish
gentleman once told me in
very simple language, that
the “t rick” of investing is
to “buy low and sell high”.
Easier said than done, but
I can assure you that it
takes many years of
intense investment studies
to know the difference.
Lately, we were hit by
numerous political and
other causes that caused
untold damage to our
investment markets.
Ridiculous political
decisions, for one, can
have extremely negative
effects to investments.
We have seen and
experienced various
negative effects, due
mainly to irresponsible
political statements.
We saw the downgrading
THIS has been one of
our busiest Easter
w e e ke n d s .
Our four generations
of family have been
with us for three
weeks.
On top of this, we
had to juggle the
expectations of paying
guests with the
demands of family,
especially
grandchildren!
As it happened our
guests enjoyed the
participation in family
activities and we had
MONEY
M AT T E R S
by numerous agencies like
Standards & Poor, Moody’s
and others. This off course
had an extremely negative
effect on the entire
e c o n o m y.
The effect following
these downgrades
certainly had been
devastating for investors.
Many investors feared
that the bottom is going to
fall out of all investment
m a r ke t s .
Yes, we certainly saw
numerous investment
markets taking a “tumble”.
This actually is why one
should put one’s trust in a
qualified, experienced and
well known investment
a d v i s o r.
They say there is a time
to be careful and a time to
be bold and only a well
experienced investment
advisor can fully
understand the difference.
Please take note that
now is certainly not the
time to climb out of a
MYHOME
... with Simon Oliver
a wonderful time with
our family especially
– the grandchildren.
They live in the
Netherlands so we
usually only “see”
them on Skype.
I’m very sad to see
the family leave but at
the same time we are
happy to get our
home back into shape
and collect the toys
that had been left all
over the place
creating all sorts of
obstacles for us, and
returned them to
friends who had lent
them to us.
The boys enjoyed
the toys and all the
sounds they made …
but Phoebe (our hyper
sensitive border
collie) would
... with
Nico Human
carefully planned
investment market and
thereby realise your
losses. Rather remain in
an investment and wait for
the markets to improve. A
loss is only suffered on the
day that you have actually
sold/realised your
i n ve st m e n t .
If one makes a study of
the “wave movements”
seen in a graph of your
investment funds, it
certainly will show rather
clearly that there is no
fund that never takes a dip
or two.
Thus there are
continually ups and downs
experienced in all
investment funds. The
severity of the ups and
downs certainly would
differ to suit one’s actual
investment risk profile.
Thus the vital importance
of the establishing of one’s
risk profile before
investments are made.
After certain political
disappear for long
periods to chill!
We shared lots of
meals together. We
discussed all sorts of
topics and we created
lots of memories.
Memories that
make coming home a
pleasure; memories
that entice guests to
return and continue
our journey together;
memories that make a
home a home.
We enjoy this
process but it do feel
good when we get our
home back to enjoy
as we want to enjoy it,
without first having to
changes had been made
since December last year,
the actual reactions of
rating agencies has
improved dramatically and
is certain to improve
further as the stability of
our internal affairs
increases.
I do not maintain that
there will not be any
further “hiccups” in our
economy, but I am
certainly experiencing vast
i m p r ove m e n t s .
I cannot stress the
importance enough that
now is the right time to
invest to ensure the
upswing in our economy
works in our favour.
Remember the saying,
“Buy Low, Sell High” and
now is certainly the time
to buy/invest.
Easter bunny comes early to Happy Hours
THE last day of the school
The older children sang for
“They get a piece of paper
Easter eggs, a baskets of
get help from their parents.”
The children enjoyed
FROM Sleepy Hollow to a hive of activity,
the area around Port Alfred and Bathurst
has seen a massive influx of visitors over
the Easter period thanks to the Royal St
Andrews Hotel (RSAH) Amanzi Festival
that began last Friday and will continue
through to this Sunday, along with the
Bathurst Agricultural Show to take place
at the Bathurst Showgrounds this
w e e ke n d .
RS AH Amanzi Festival has been a great
success this year, and aims to become
the premier water-sport festival in the
country. From the enthusiasm shown by
competitors, this is highly likely in the
next few years. The festival continues
until Sunday with international surfing
taking place on Friday, Saturday and
Sunday. Plus, there are lots of things to
do at West Beach and Kiddies Beach to
keep the entire family entertained this
w e e ke n d .
THE Bathurst Agricultural Show, now in its
110th year, is on this weekend and, with
new and exciting events to look forward
to, will probably be the best yet. The show
committee has done an outstanding job
of organising the event and, this year, and
despite the VAT increase, the price of
admission remains the same.
From cattle auctions where some of the
best animals in the country will be up for
grabs, to a horse derby, from floral art
exhibitions to the latest farm machinery;
from the singing cowboy to police
displays, the Bathurst Agricultural Show
has it all. Added to this there are plenty of
food stalls, beer (and other alcoholic
drinks) tents, all providing their own
brand of entertainment, the Bathurst
Agricultural Show is another of those
“places to be” this weekend.
There are also a number of other activities
taking place this weekend, so read our
Diarise This section below for more
councillors felt it only fitting to extend the
meeting until after 3pm.
It was at this meeting that mayor Phindile
Faxi expressed exception to an article I
wrote on Ndlambe Municipality not aptly
supporting a tourism capacity-planning
meeting last month, calling the report
“tabloid journalism”. He was making a
point of stories being sensationalised to
entice more readers. He also complained
that the municipality had not had the
opportunity to respond. However, Talk of
the town is always willing to publish any
reasonable response to any of the articles
we write. But the problem is far more
serious than just upsetting the mayor.
Tourism is one of only two industries in
this area. We do not have car
manufacturing plants as do our two
closest metropolitan municipalities, or an
existing fishing industry (this is a sore
point with many of the victims of the
Department of Agriculture, forests and
fisherieswithdrawing commercial fishing
licences). We rely on farming and tourism
as the two staples in our community and
therefore any activity that will help
improve tourism and create more jobs
must be taken seriously by the municipal
officials and councillors alike. At the
meeting last month the mayor and other
officials were apparently busy with more
pressing matters. This is unacceptable in
a depressed area such as Ndlambe.
Surely there had to be more councillors
available than mayoral stand-in Ray
Schenk to attend this critical meeting.
Perhaps this was tabloid journalism (we
are, after all, a tabloid), but the intention
of the article was to point out a problem
to everyone. We cannot allow tourism to
die or even remain stagnant or the area
will die. We need to get involved,
particularly when we have
internationally-acclaimed events such as
the Bathurst Show taking place this
weekend, and when teams from Australia,
and individuals from around the world
come to compete here in Port Alfred in
the Amanzi Festival. We need to do a lot
more to attract visitors and competitors,
and we need the support of tourism
bodies and therefore need to attend these
types of tourism events. If that upsets the
administration then so be it.
THE VAT increase has certainly had an
LOUISE KNOWLES
LOCAL entertainers Rob Knowles and Scott
Harvey returned to Tash’s Craft Bar last
Saturday night with the second edition of their
Unorthodox Jukebox show, also featuring
dancers Melissa du Randt and Sasha
B a d e n h o r st .
Ta s h ’s has become a vibrant venue since
Tasha Kenny became the tenant at the old Spur
venue, previously known as Barnacles.
It’s a large venue with an open space for
tables and dancing, and a bar along the wall
opposite the stage.
Unorthodox Jukebox Volume 2, opened with
the theme from Star Wars, with red, green and
purple strobe lighting, counting down to Scott
Har vey’s Jailhouse Rock instrumental and Tut ti
Frut ti, complete with hip rolls, shoulders and
hands on the butt.
It was red-hot musical mayhem on Saturday
night, starting quietly, getting faster, and
swelling and peaking around 9pm. With the
green stage lighting changing to blue, Harvey
sang a very sexy rendition of Leave My Blues
Behind. Badenhorst and Du Randt came on
stage with canes, adding to the visual delight.
There was belly-dancing action and Du Randt
did a great job singing These Boots Were Made
for Walking.
The mood of the audience was salubrious,
despite Knowles’ comedy – or perhaps because
of it. The running joke in the show was the
aging sex symbol passing on the baton to a
younger one. Knowles belted out If You Could
Read My Mind, in smooth tones, using his
baritone vocals to best effect.
“I feel like a woman,” he quips. “Bit late to
get one. Doesn’t happen very often. Used to
when I was a sex symbol.”
He really knows how to schmooze and cajole
an audience. “I don’t mind if you don’t. We
don’t judge here. That’s apparently God’s job.
He’s going to send you to hell.”
During intermission, Tash’s delicious burgers
were served – a choice of chicken or beef. The
chicken was succulent, the relish more than
adequate and the fresh lettuce and tomato just
right. The slap chips were also nice and crispy.
Harvey sang a medley of Elvis songs – All
Shook Up, and Don’t Be Cruel, from his
breakthrough year, 1956, until a decade or two
later, when it was all downhill after that. When
other people were writing songs about popcorn,
Little Richard, Buddy Holly and Chuck Berry
started writing songs with meaning, along with
the likes of Bob Dylan and the Beatles.
Elvis met Priscilla in 1966, married in 1967
and divorced in 1972 when this song fell in his
lap: “Maybe I didn’t treat you quite as good as I
could have, you were always on my mind, you
were always on my mind”. The mood changed
with Wake up Little Susie when Rob rejoined
Scott on stage. They sang American Pie,
although Mr Bojangles would have been
perfect. After a pleasant show, the downer
coming home was to find our property had
been burgled.
I hope the culprits get some Jailhouse Rock.
Thrills and spills at jet ski races
LOUISE KNOWLES
THERE were thrills-and-spills a-plenty
at the Royal St Andrews Hotel Amanzi
Festival jet ski races on East Beach
last Saturday.
Spectators were left in a panic
following a heart-stopping incident,
when local jet skier, Tim
Fetherstonhaugh, fell into the water.
Fellow jet skier John Johnson on a
blue jet ski, who was watching
Fetherstonhaugh, did not notice Noel
Greyling passing in front of him on a
yellow ski. Johnson collided with
Greyling, severely bruising his leg and
cracking his jet ski’s hull.
The NSRI assisted Greyling from the
beach and Gardmed medics attended
to him after which he was able to
return to the race.
However, the friendship was also
bruised, despite Johnson’s apology to
Greyling who used some very strong
language in reply.
At that stage, Greyling was tied first
with Simon Thiessen to win the race.
“The bad language was in the heat of
moment, with adrenalin rushing,”
said Fetherstonhaugh who estimated
the cost of repair to the jet ski at
about R30000 to R40000.
Fetherstonhaugh, a former Formula
1 powerboat racer, enjoyed jet ski
racing for the first time on Saturday.
The waves were a challenge as he is
used to riding powerboats on flat,
inland waters.
“You have to keep the ski straight
as you approach a wave. If you are
skew, you will fall off,” he said.
Fortunately, when he came off the
jet ski on Saturday he was wearing, a
regulation helmet and lifejacket with
an impact vest.
LONG HAUL: John Johnson riding in the Royal St Andrews Hotel Amanzi Festival Jet Ski Barnacles Challenge from the Kowie
River into the sea, around the buoy on West Beach and back into the river mouth on Sunday. Johnson also rode in the surf
section on Saturday to earn a combined score putting him in fifth place in the jet ski races Picture: LOUISE KNOWLES
“We were doing 60-80km/h
depending on the surf, and 110km/h
in the river,” he said as compared it
to powerboating speeds of about
250km/h. At the prize-giving Morgan
Thiessen received first prize, second
spot went to Simon Thiessen,
Fetherstonhaugh came in third,
Greyling received fourth prize and
John Johnson fifth.
Fetherstonhaugh did not expect to
come third in the race. “I was riding a
stock 1.8, against supercharged 1.8
and rotex motor and having a wrist
injury also didn’t help,” he said.
Fetherstonhaugh has not competed
in any Formula 1 racing since 2012.
“I won the championship in 2010, in
three different divisions, one division
three times, and five or six times I
was a Formula 1 Springbok. “But I
don’t know I’ll if race again in SA,” he
said.
“The sport [F1 powerboating] was
stopped in South Africa not because
it is too dangerous, but because of
the politics,” said Fetherstonhaugh.
“You are strapped in [in Formula 1]
and the sport has the lowest death
rate in the world among motorsports.
“More guys are killed in cars and
bikes than in Formula 1
p o w e r b o at i n g , ” he said.
He has raced in Ajman, Khorfokkan
and Abu Dhabi in the UAE, Dubai and
Singapore.
Asked to compare inflatables with
Formula 1 powerboats,
Fetherstonhaugh only shook his head.
“No comparison. I’m a speed freak.
I like Formula 1,” he said.
However, he had a serious accident
in 2008 when his Formula 1 boat
flipped in the water.
He was upside down in the water
and the buckle of his harness
jammed. Fetherstonaugh almost
drowned and doesn’t remember
anything after the start, before
waking up in hospital. After that he
gave up Formula 1 racing for a year
when his son was three years old.
Now the jet ski bug has bitten.
“Next year as long as I can get a jet
ski, I will definitely be in,” he said.
Most of the participants footed the
bill themselves this weekend because
the race is not part of the national
leg. “I also need to find a coach and
get fit,” he said.
He would like to race overseas
again, but his grandmother, Dot
Fetherstonhaugh has cancer and he
has made a serious commitment to
stay at her side.
Those who would like to sponsor
Fetherstonhaugh next year are
welcome to e-mail
timfetherstonhaugh@gmail.com
Tasty oxtail clinches
victory in potjie contest
JON HOUZET
WITH half a dozen
mouth-watering dishes to
choose from, judges from Talk
of the Town had a tough time
deciding on a winner and even
a top three in the Route 72
Saloon potjiekos competition
last Saturday.
After sampling each pot, with
rice provided by the Saloon,
judges settled on the Schultz
family's oxtail and dried
peaches potjie as the winner.
The oxtail had a very rich
flavour and was nicely offset by
the butternut served on the
side. We joked that the child
labour element, with young
Sarah Schultz helping prepare
the meal, was a nice touch, and
made us say, “Please sir, may I
have some more.”
The winners received a R1000
cash prize.
We awarded Yogan Reddy's
pork and pea curry second
place, earning him R500. It was
a very gentle curry with a
smooth texture, and our taste
buds were pleased with the
small carrot salad that
accompanied it.
In third place was the creamy
chicken and Brussels sprouts
potjie made by Andy "Pickle"
Moore and Charl Waters. They
got R300.
Among the other delectable
dishes were a seafood potjie
with mussels, prawns and hake
made by Geoff Cowley; a kudu
venison knuckle potjie by John
Tweedie; a chicken and potato
curry, also by Reddy; and two
potjies by Saloon owners
Louwrens and Jacobie van
ON YOUR MARKS: About 50 swimmers ready to swim from the Halyards
Hotel jetty in the Amanzi Festival Marina Mile Picture: LOUISE KNOWLES
PE pair shine
as records fall
in Marina Mile
LOUISE KNOWLES
PORT Elizabeth swimmers Ian
Venter, 19, and Hannah Counihan,
15, have made a splash by setting
new records at last Friday’s Royal
St Andrews Hotel Amanzi Festival
Marina Mile.
They both won trophies on
which their names will be
e n g r av e d .
The Marina Mile attracted about
50 swimmers (up from last year’s
33). At the prize giving last Friday
Marina Mile co-organiser, Avril
Beyleveld said: “Now that we are
confident with a good event, we
will be able to market the Marina
Mile on a large scale next year.”
After the safety briefing,
swimmers entered the water from
the jetty behind the Halyards
Hotel to reach the starting line at
the canal, then set off around the
first marina island, returning to
the Halyards and the small boat
harbour up the Kowie River.
There were three swimming
categories: juniors (12-18) who
wore yellow bathing caps, open
section (19-29) who wore red and
seniors (30+) who wore white
bathing caps, necessary for
identification at the finish line.
One section of the river was
silted up and swimmers returned
with mud on their chins.
“That is the nature of open
water swimming,” said Beyleveld.
“You take it as you find it.”
Venter finished the race first in
a record-breaking time (21:53)
followed by last year’s winner,
Slater Black, 17, who was five
seconds behind in 21:58,
improving on his own time last
year (23:15). In third place was
another junior, Cole Craig, 18, who
was also second in the junior
section. He swims for the same
swimming club in Port Elizabeth
as the first two swimmers. His
time was 22:59.
The first female across the
finish line was Counihan in a time
of 23:05, followed by last year’s
winner, Paige Black in a time of
23:31, beating her own record of
25:06 last year. Courtney Repine
was third in another record time
of 24:05.
Members of the Port Alfred
swimming team also participated
and won some prizes. They were
Saffron Tweedie, Emily Beatt,
Scarlett Tweedie, William Beatt
and Kate Tinley.
Jenny Middleton came last but
was by far the most popular
swimmer as the entire
Presbyterian Church turned up to
support their minister, who was
swimming to raise funds for
charity. She and last male, Vernon
Bezuidenhout, finished the race
together in 50:37.
THERE was a good turnout of local and
regional athletes and fun runners at the start
line of the trail run that opened the week-long
Royal St Andrews Hotel Amanzi Festival, at
the Royal Port Alfred Golf Course last Friday.
Kowie Strider and parkrunner, Sizakele
Dayimani, and 16-year-old athlete from Kowie
Striders Ayabonga Saul (junior) were both
hoping to make the top five in their respective
divisions out of a field of more than 80
competitors. Both of them got their wish.
Wandile Funda, 42, also achieved a top five
placing whileLithemba “Ndoda” Jekana, 13,
was placed among the top three juniors.
Jacky Kobokana from Port Elizabeth was
looking good to win the ladies’ over-50 event.
Karen Ferreira, 14, adjusting the monitor
she wore strapped to her shoulder, was first
to shoot out from the starting line when the
star ter’s gun sounded.
The course crossed the greens and wound
on and off the beach to the river, where there
is a historic concrete staircase up the hill to
Stenden. East London club runner Vusumzi
Zondo, 24, emerged first from the top of the
hill. A moment later, he had passed through
the bush above Medolino Caravan Park and
crossed the finish line in the parking lot at
the back of the Royal St Andrews Hotel, in a
time of 27:19. He was followed shortly
thereafter by Port Alfred’s Dayimani who
came second in the open section (29:39).
The third male in the open section was
another Port Alfred runner, Funda, who came
home in a time of 30:44. Funda was also first
in the age group 40-49. He was followed by
his mentee, Ndoda, who came first in the
boys’ section in a time of 31:34.
First lady home was Jene Banfield (12th in
the field of about 80 runners) whose time
was 36:57. The second lady was Kerry Currie
and third home was Yolande Boshoff.
Kobokana was the first in the category of
ladies in the 50-59 age group. She was also
the first runner home in that age group for
both men and women, in a time of 41:16, with
Neil Currie, 53, coming in second at 41:36.
It was a close race between Ferreira and
local girl Rebecca Nelson in the junior girls’
section, with Ferreira finishing first in a time
of 38:45 and Nelson coming second in a time
of 39:14.
Handing out T-shirts, Kowie Striders club
captain Alan Robb, a popular Comrades
Marathon veteran, said he is still running.
Although he had a heart bypass operation
last year, he will be running his 43rd
Comrades next year.
“Runners love T-shirts, that's what they
always want,” Robb said.
‘Weak’ two bids in the majors occur frequently in bridge: there is a considerable difference
between having 6 or 7 points with a threadbare major suit and holding 10 or 11 points with a
major suit containing good intermediaries. Partnerships need to identify the difference
between these types.
ranking suit) this says to partner “describe your hand”. However South enters the affray by
doubling: West passes which says “I have a weak hand” North still has nothing to say: East
signs off in 3S knowing that in spite of having a hand worth an opening bid, East is weak and
North, with a strong hand is sitting behind you, so your unsupported Kings are at risk.
From the results shown below some players did not heed the bidding, or did not have the
mechanisms in place with which to identify possible pitfalls.
SIX HONORARY DOCTORATES FOR
GRAD ...
NO less than six honorary Doctorates
will be conferred at the 114th Rhodes
University graduation ceremony
which gets under way in the 1820
Settlers National Monument today
and continues until Saturday.
During graduation proceedings, the
university will confer honorary
doctorates on six “exceptional
individuals” of whom Rhodes
vice-chancellor Dr Sizwe Mabizela
said: “Not only have they made it
their life’s work to enrich the lives of
others, they are also excellent role
models to us all.”
The six honorary doctorate
recipients are: Dr Sindiwe Magona
(world-renowned author, poet, activist
and storyteller – doctor of Letters);
Professor Peter Mtuze (Leading
scholar in the field of African
Languages and the first black
professor at Rhodes – Doctor of
Letters); Dr Andrew Mlangeni (spent
years of unswerving and sustained
commitment to the fight against
apartheid, including 26 years on
Robben Island prison – Doctor of
Laws); Professor Vishnu Padayachee
(distinguished Professor at Wits
University, he served three terms over
12 years on the board of directors of
the SA Reserve Bank – doctor of
economics); Ms Yvonne Chaka Chaka
(her musical career spanned three
decades prior to her involvement in
humanitarian work – doctor of Laws);
and Justice Dikgang Moseneke (he
has made an exceptional contribution
in the development of the
jurisprudence of South Africa –
doctor of Laws).
Once the formal graduation
proceedings are completed on
Saturday, attention will then turn to
the traditional garden party on the
lawns behind the Drostdy Arch and,
later on Saturday night, the
Graduation Ball.
BOOKS AND PETS ...
Phillip and June McDougall of
High Street are to be commended on
their ongoing fund-raising efforts for
Grahamstown SPCA.
Residents drop off second-hand
books at Madhatter’s and customers
then purchase them, with proceeds
going to SPCA. Well done!
NEW SHOP ON BEAUFORT ...
At the official opening of the Makana
Service Station at the corner of
Beaufort Street and Bathurst Street a
fortnight ago, it was announced that
a Pick n Pay convenience store will
open on the premises adjacent to the
Caltex service station.
The new shop will be 120m² in
extent, and will be located in the
double-storey building in Bathurst
Street alongside the service station.
Co-owner of the new development,
Jon Campbell, said the rezoning and
other red tape issues had been
attended to and it was all systems go
There’s going to be much fun and
laughter on Saturday, April 14 when
Mountain Drive. The action gets
under way at 9am (registration from
8am) and the entry fee is R10pp.
what set Makana Service Station
proud to have you as part of us,” he
added.
Mr Phehello Mahasele, Mr Patrick Tali
ON VACATION ...
been on vac for the past fortnight and
return to lecture halls and theatres on
GOVERNING ...
Graeme College’s recently-elected
School Governing Body (SGB)
Graeme College on his selection to
the South African Schools’ A debating
team, which essentially means he is
amongst the top 10 debaters in the
countr y.
CAPTAIN OF THE TEAM . ..
Jess Gornall, a member of Belmont
Golf Club, has been selected captain
of the Eastern Province ladies’ team
to play in the 72-hole team golf
championships in Pretoria in May.
RANKING IMPROVED …
Erin Powers of Diocesan School for
Girls took part in the under-14 girls’
section of last month’s SA Schools
closed squash tournament in
Johannesburg and ended up 7th
overall in the country, improving her
SA national age group ranking to 6th.
Being an invitational tournament
there was a very high level of squash
on display at Parkview Squash Centre
from under-14 level to under-19 for
both boys and girls.
The tournament was a compulsory
qualifying event for possible national
selections in 2018.
PART OF THE TEAM …
I was one of thousands of spectators
attending the Graeme College rugby
day a fortnight ago.
And during the course of the day I
took time off to page through the very
informative programme which was
sponsored by Pam Golding
Proper ties.
What struck me upon looking
through details of the various
competing schools on the day were
the officials accompanying the teams,
presumably all teachers.
Three decades ago there was the
team coach and that was that. These
days schools’ senior teams have head
coaches, assistant coaches, forward
coaches, backline coaches,
biokineticists, fitness trainers and
even sport scientists.
What happened to the good old
baggage master and the guy who
rubbed wintergreen on tired and
aching legs?
STICKERS AND SHOELACES …
It may be a long way off, but Child
Welfare Grahamstown is reminding
and urging local businesses and
individuals to become involved in
Tekkie Tax Day on May 25.
In order to help Grahamstown
children, Child Welfare is selling
stickers at R10 each, shoelaces for
R35 a pair (includes a sticker) and
T-shirts for adults (R85 each) and
children (R65 each).
COUNTRY LESSONS ...
The Grahamstown 1966 Directory has
a section titled “Schools” and lists
not only Grahamstown schools, but
also rural schools in the district
. I wonder which of those listed in
the booklet are still in existence.
Check out the following: Alicedale
Primary School; Manley Flats Primary
School; Mount Pleasant Primary
School; Salem Primary School;
Sevenfountains Primary School; and
TWO OCEANS …
The results of Grahamstown athletes
who took part in the Old Mutual Two
Oceans ultra-marathon (56km) and
will be published in next week’s
Grahamstown column.
BOWLSBANTER
... what’s happening
Stan Weyer, Ironing –
Trevor Frost.
Kowie Bowling Club
“In the midst of life
we are in death” – a
truism attributed to a
Benedictine Monk (circa
904) – is as applicable
now as it was more
than 1000 years ago.
The members of
Kowie Bowls and, in
fact, the whole
community, were
profoundly shocked to
hear that Keith Kolesky
suddenly passed away
at the age of 66.
There cannot be
many couples who, in
their short stay here,
had already made such
a favourable and
indelible impression as
Keith and Lyn had.
Keith’s educational
years were spent in the
Western Province, and
the latter part of his
working and married
life in Durban.
With both being keen
spor ting and fitness
fanatics, they led a very
active life. Keith later
turned to bowls, where
he cut his bowling teeth
at the Westville Bowling
Club. He (and Lyn) soon
proved to be very
valuable members both
on and off the green. As
part of the extended
Blackbeard clan, Keith
and Lyn had spent
many holidays at Port
Alfred and were very
popular visitors to
Kowie Bowls.
Their retirement here
in 2016 was, at the
time, eagerly awaited
by the members of
Kowie Bowls.
An excellent bowler
in his own right, Keith’s
engaging personality,
ready wit, and banter
made him “top of the
pops” when anybody
was asked to name
their favourite skip. An
inspirational leader, he
engendered a “gees” in
his team which usually
took them to great
heights but when they
lost they did so
graciously and still
enjoyed it.
As a club member, he
was that rarity in clubs,
a person who accepted
the responsibilities akin
to membership, ie, he
was a member of the
executive, the selection,
and the grading
committee and,
because of his
personality, our
favourite barman.
Sadly, last year, the
trauma of a devastating
accident, saw Keith
having to apply all his
motivational skills to
encourage and support
Lyn through
re-constructive surgery
and rehabilitation. They
were just beginning to
see daylight.
Our thoughts are now
with Lyn and her
children. She will have
the loving support of a
closely-knit family, as
well as the members of
Kowie.
To a great guy who, in
his brief stay, brought
so much joy to all who
knew him – Hamba
Tu e s d ay ’s Megabucks
was again
characterised by the
number of close
finishes, except for the
CLEAR WINNERS: Winners of the Radue Trips at the Port Alfred Bowling
game which was won
by Jonty Alexander
Theresa Pretorius and
Keith Benson.
The Ladies’ Singles
marches on with its
own share of drama and
none more so than Judy
Alexander’s last shot in
her tight game against
Jackie Kriel. At 20 all
Jackie was lying three
shots with one virtually
CROQUET
CORNER ... rolls that count
PROBABLY because of the Easter
break, there were a lot less
players than usual.
Next week should see a return
on the Jack. Judy’s last
bowl curled with just
enough speed to take
the jack away and lie
shot – well done both of
you for a very
entertaining game.
T h u r s d ay ’s Ocean
Basket competition was
won be John Hubbard,
Don Armstrong and
John Abbot. On
Saturday, in excellent
weather, we enjoyed an
af ternoon’s bowls, with
the only prize being the
snowball – won by
Steve and his team.
Duties for the week of
April 9: Eddie Hoseck –
Gradwell and Robert
Sandiland – Marking,
Claire Bell – Tab Money,
Jonty and Judy
Alexander – B a r.
We still need more donations
for the raffle hampers.
April 1
Easter Sunday saw the
RPAGC Ladies’ Section
organise another 4 Ball
Alliance Competition
following the success of
their inaugural event a
few months ago. The
alliance had a twist with
1 to count on the first
hole, 2 to count on the
second hole and 3 to
count on the third, the
sequence then recurring.
Main sponsor was
Continental Restaurant
and Deli along with
support from Suds
Soaps and O’Neills
Risk and Financial
Management Gauteng.
A stiff easterly
provided an additional
challenge to the field of
68 players.
Winners were Kevin
Berrington, Lindy
Wright, John and Jeni
Mager who counted
out Paul and Sandy
Fryer, and Andy and
Joy Altson into runner
up spot with both
teams on 90 points.
Kevin and Shirley Heny,
and Vaughn and Gail
Bursey took third place
counting out Tony and
Pat Halse, and Wollie
and Annerie Wo l m a r a n s
on 84 points.
Nearest the pins
were Andy on the 6th,
Rick Hill on the 11th,
Kevin Heny on the 11th
and Glen Lello on the
13th.
The Easter bunny
was generous with
dishing out Easter eggs
and all participants
enjoyed a meal
afterwards as part of
the festivities aligned
with the event.
The next Mixed
organised by the
Ladies’ Section is
scheduled for Sunday
May 27 with the theme
under review.
Warm and almost
windless conditions
almost dispelled the
sponsored by Ocean
Yvonne Hill and
Jenny Ralph combined
well to card 47 points
and win the
competition. Kim
second on 45 points
counting out Ellen
on the same score.
Good individual
performances were
noted by Sheena Warren
and Ronel Hough with
nett 69’s and Heather
with a nett 68.
Yvonne hit the
longest drive on the
handicaps of 21 or less,
while Joanne Hilliar did
likewise for those with
higher handicaps. Two
clubs on par threes
were holed by Margie,
Jenny and Glynnis
Renecle all on the 8th.
Carol Lee was
closest to the pin on
Top Carpets' 6th.
Margie was closest on
Rosehill Driving
“nearest-for-t wo” on
River Spa's 13th.
Sheena and Heather
shared the jackpot on
FRESH STOP PORT
ALFRED MIXED
March 31
Easter Saturday saw 33
players pitch for the
draw, gentlemen
outnumbering ladies
two to one, to be
drawn in 3 and 4-balls
to contest the weekly
Freshstop mixed
stableford alliance
competition. Winners
on the day was the
team of Fanie Smit,
Nick Oosthuizen, Pogs
Smith and Bruce Smith
on 88 points.
Second, and just
behind, on 86 points
was the all-male team,
drawn in this instance
and not by choice, of
Eric Segers, Greg
Shanks, Len Bohnen
and Graham Finlay.
Not fairing as well
with a return of 76
did sufficient to earn
the sponsors Energade
KGB RESULTS
Tuesday March 27:
Once again a perfect
morning for golf
dawned on Tuesday
and 45 players
answered the call to
play the usual
2-to-count Stableford
alliance drawn into
three 3-balls and nine
4-balls.
There was a level of
disparity in the
contribution made by
one in the team of
John Ralph, Tom Tagg,
Steve Kennedy and
Derick van Harmelen,
but insufficient to deny
them coming home in
top spot with 91 points.
They were two points
to the fore of joint
runners up (1) Johnny
Johnson, Paul Fryer,
Neil Loundar and Hugh
Holmes and (2) Gavin
Richards, Andy
Manson, Kevin Maree
and Eric Segers.
The ball just seemed
to not want to go in the
hole for John Crandon,
Mike McNamara and
visitor Ian Gatenby
resulting in a lowly
score of just 68 + 5 =
73 points. The
consequence of this
was, of course, sharing
the notorious Hamer
and Sukkel trophy at
their table on the 19th
hole.
Two clubs were
holed by Steve
Kennedy (11th) and Eric
Segers (13th). There
were a number of good
individual nett scores,
the best being Neil
Loundar, Gavin
Richards (65), Heinz
Czepluch (67), Dave
Curran, Mark Warren
(68), Peter Reed, Barrie
Brady, John Abbot,
Steve Kennedy and
Derick van Harmelen
(69).
Friday March 30:
Good Friday saw 33
players drawn in 3 and
4-balls to play the
normal 2-count
Stableford alliance.
John Abbott, Martin
Lambrechts, Derick and
Heather van Harmelen
romped home with 92
points with second
spot jointly going to
Russel Warren, Andy
Barnes, Brian Hayward
and Johnny Johnston
along with Rusty
Hallam, Johnny van
Rensburg, John Abbot
and Bob Shaw on 89
points.
Visitor Ian Gatenby,
Barrie Brady and
Graham Finlay posted a
somewhat dismal 75
points to ensure the
Hamer and Sukkel took
its place at their table
for prize giving.
Two clubs were
recorded by Quentin
Hogge (11th), Mark
Warren (13th), Tim
Leach (8th) and Tim
Anderson (6th).
Individual good
scores were recorded
by Rusty with a nett 69,
Gavin Richards and
Johnny with 68’s.
Thrills, spills in nationals
LOUISE KNOWLES
THE Royal St Andrews Hotel Amanzi
Festival rubber duck national race,
which took place on Saturday and
Sunday at East Beach, attracting
about 12 stock class and six modified
rubber ducks, also drew world-class
competition, such as world No 3 in
2009, Murray Elliott.
Elliott is known throughout the
country and the world and has been
to the US and China, even building
boats for the US Navy.
He usually spends a few months
overseas and returns to Cintsa, where
he has a boat-building business,
Ocean Extreme, and surfs, said his
brother-in-law Kevin Ackermann.
Elliott was hoping to make a
“comeback”, but his modified engine
seized and he was out of the race in
the second round.
Engine problems are common,
especially in the modified class where
engines are tweaked and things can
be overlooked.
“Pro-stock and modified boats can
be compared to superbikes and
MotoGP bikes,” referee Mike Hatting
said.
Pro-stock rubber ducks have
regulation 570CC engines.
The pro-stock class means that the
engine is out-of-the-box standard 50
horsepower, but the modified class
can be tweaked to obtain maximum
horsepower and tends to break down
more often.
Thrills and spills during the event
included a boat hitting a rock in the
beginning of the practice lap in the
first heat. As the rubber duck is full of
compressed air, if it lands on a rock it
can pop “like a bomb”.
“Capsized boats are common
especially when the boats go out over
the waves as the waves shoot you sky
high and then the wind catches you,”
Elliott said.
After a boat flips, normally the
engine takes on water and the spark
SKY HIGH: Shooting over the wave is the boat M14, piloted by Murray Elliott and co-piloted by Zane Schonknecht, who can
be seen balancing the front of the boat. Picture: Jaco van Rensburg, Railtime Photography.
plugs need to be taken out. Most of
the pilots can strip an engine on the
beach and put it together in time for
the next heat.
If there is an accidental flip, races
are stopped to allow the safety boat
to help the crew turn the boat over
lengthwise in the surf and clear the
course. The red flag goes up and the
race continues when the boat has
been cleared.
The boats are scored at the end of
each round of six laps. Flag holders
raise flags at the end of each lap to
show what position a boat is in.
Points from the surf event on
Saturday were combined with points
from the long-haul Barnacles
Challenge on Sunday, when the boats
travelled along the river and out to
sea along West Beach in a hot,
easterly wind and choppy conditions.
The pro-stock results were: 1st –
Ryno Verster and Nico Parr; 2nd –
Kyle Kolby and Ross Templeman; 3rd
– Riegan Rous and Swan Botha; 4th –
Kyle Kriel and Darren Beying; 5th –
Josh Myburg and SC Colombo.
The modified results were
surprising as in the end, Elliott and
co-pilot Zane Schonknecht came fifth
in the rubber duck modified class.
“Their combined points from the
first day were sufficient to put them
in fifth place,” Hattingh said.
“There were also lots of drop outs
in the modified class. We only had six
out of 18 modified boats and there
were only three out of six left at the
end of the day.”
In fourth place was boat N20, with
pilot Elandré Human and co-pilot
Tristan Wille from Grahamstown.
Wille, a 17-year-old Kingswood
pupil, who practised in Kenton,
Kasouga, Port Elizabeth, and Port
Alfred, said this was his first boat
race.
In third place was boat M46, Rowan
Nortje and Yurie van Gendt. Tying for
first place were Mark Gleen and Willis
Lenar in boat M17 and boat Chad
Romans and Candice Hatting in M79.
Most of the contestants were from
East London or Port Elizabeth but
some were from Cape Town, along
with locals like the 43 Air School duo
Seok Jung and Dawid Appelgryn.
West Coast pilot Josh Myburgh told
TotT that rubber duck racing was very
rough and it was necessary to hold
on tight to the rudder and side ropes,
with footholds for the pilot’s feet.
If the boat capsizes, it is therefore
possible to get out from underneath
the boat.
The co-pilot sits in front of the boat
when it goes out to sea to prevent it
from flipping over backwards when it
planes over the waves, and has to
constantly move about to balance the
b o at .
Development rubber duck riders
from Nemato Change a Life reported
frequently falling out of the boat
when it ramped over the waves and
that it was very scary when they
started training in October last year.
Pumlani Kamanaare was the
co-pilot and George Bester, who
trained him, was the pilot on
Saturday and Sunday. Unfortunately,
Lifa Nxobo, trained by Kyle Kriel, was
a no-show. Kamanaare reported
feeling bruised and battered, and
there was a wound on his leg rubbed
raw from the footholds.
Kamanaare received a standing
ovation at the prize-giving, which was
held at the Royal St Andrews Hotel on
Sunday night.
He was rewarded for his efforts and
broke into tears when Amanzi Festival
main sponsor, Martin Bekker,
informed him how much money had
been deposited into his bank
account.
The winning duo were Candice
Hatting and Chad Romans. As a
woman co-pilot, Candice is a rarity in
the world of rubber duck racing,
something she has been doing for the
past 16 years. She has been a co-pilot
with Romans for four years.
“She is more than brave, she is
o n e - of - a - k i n d , ” Romans said.
organisers to postpone the
Royal St Andrews Hotel
Amanzi Festival Association of
Professional Bodyboarding
semi-finals to the afternoon.
APB South Africa manager
Carl Liebenberg was the
international organiser, and
Clinton Millard the local
o r g a n i s e r.
Current world champion Iain
Campbell, as well as No15
seed on the pro tour, South
African Tristan Roberts, took
par t.
“The Port Alfred event is a
qualifying tour to get onto the
grand tour,” Liebenberg said.
It was also the first APB
event of the year and the first
time its been held in South
Africa.
In the semi-finals, Campbell
was knocked out by Michael
Ostler and had to be content
to contest the podium finals
for third or fourth place with
Alex Nutt, and a prize for the
best move, an invert, on day
one.
Nutt, a 16-year-old from the
Richards Bay area, was
defeated by Roberts.
“But Nutt has a great future
ahead of him. He went
overseas on the junior world
tour, and this is his first pro
event,” Millard said.
In the podium finals,
Campbell and Nutt sorted out
their differences on the waves,
with the world champion
claiming third place and
young Nutt coming fourth.
Going through to the finals,
Roberts and Ostler duked it
out with Ostler taking a wave
all the way to the beach and
running back in his flippers.
Roberts came first and
Ostler second.
“The prize money is R60000
(US $5000) to be divided
between the top four riders,
with the winner netting
R35 000,” Liebenberg said.
“R35 000 or three months in
Bali,” joked emcee Deon
“Mumbles” M e y e r.
The winners were
announced at the prize-giving
on Sunday night.
Roberts can use his win to
gain points on the APB tour
towards becoming the world
champion.
Last Friday, West Beach
Warfare, under the auspices
of the SA Bodyboarding
Association, saw local boys,
girls, women, men and
development riders take part.
“The local riders have to
earn 1000 points in order to
help them to seed into the
grand slam,” Liebenberg said.
Local bodyboarders Millard
and young Kyle Lax, riding in
his first professional event,
came second in the masters
and third in the men’s
respectively, and qualified to
go on the world tour.
