Oman’s government finally<br />
confirmed the opening of the new<br />
terminal of Muscat International<br />
Airport, a major step to position the<br />
Sultanate as an alternative global<br />
hub between Europe, the Middle<br />
East, Africa and Asia. The new<br />
facility will be able to accommodate<br />
12-million passengers a year in<br />
Phase 1 and 48 million in its ultimate<br />
development phase. The first stage<br />
covers 580,000 m2 and features<br />
86 check-in counters, 10 baggage<br />
claim belts, 40 gates, 29 lounges,<br />
29 aircraft stands with jet-bridges<br />
as well as expanded retail and<br />
food areas. The airport is the main<br />
base for national carrier Oman Air<br />
which serves 48 destinations with<br />
its fleet of 47 aircraft. The airline is<br />
launching this year new routes to<br />
Casablanca, Istanbul and Moscow.<br />
EMIRATES DEPLOYS SPECIAL “YEAR<br />
OF ZAYED” AIRCRAFT TO MARK FIRST<br />
INTERNATIONAL FLIGHT AT NEW MUSCAT<br />
INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT TERMINAL<br />
Emirates was the first international<br />
airline to land a scheduled<br />
commercial flight at the newly<br />
inaugurated passenger terminal<br />
at Muscat International Airport in<br />
March 2018. To mark the occasion,<br />
the airline deployed one of its<br />
special “Year of Zayed” Boeing<br />
777-300ER aircraft, highlighting the<br />
ties between Oman and the UAE.<br />
Flight EK 864 landed at 5:55pm<br />
on 20th March, and was the first<br />
international flight to operate<br />
to the new passenger terminal.<br />
Passengers on board came from<br />
destinations like Dhaka, Baghdad<br />
and Dammam via Dubai<br />

Kenya Airways has worked with the USAID<br />
Reducing Opportunities for Unlawful<br />
Transport of Endangered Species (ROUTES)<br />
Partnership to hold a training for staff on<br />
how to detect and stop wildlife trafficking.<br />
The national carrier is among a total<br />
of 89 airlines and organizations which<br />
have signed up to the United for Wildlife<br />
Transport Taskforce Buckingham Palace<br />
Declaration against illegal wildlife trade.<br />
Speaking during the Awareness Training<br />
on Combating of Wildlife Trafficking at<br />
the Kenya Airways Pride Centre in Nairobi,<br />
Her Excellency, First Lady of the Republic<br />
of Kenya Margaret Kenyatta said: “I<br />
applaud this initiative that stands out as an<br />
innovative measure that includes the global<br />
transportation systems to help break these<br />
illegal chains of unlawful transportation of<br />
endangered species”<br />
