opportunity to win prizes and just have fun. Each male student was encouraged to creatively
think of a way to ask a gal pal to prom. Austin Sanders submitted his promposal to pal Morgan
Burney, this year’s homecoming queen. His promposal simply involved writing, “Out of all the
fish in the sea, will you go to prom with me?” on teacher Donna Campbell’s whiteboard.
“These two have such a sweet friendship,” said Campbell.
“All of our pals have made a big difference in my students’ lives, but they also tell me how
my students have made a big difference in their lives, too.” Pals attending the special needs
prom in Flowood this year are Morgan Burney and Austin Sanders, Madison Porter and
Caleb Byrd, Presleigh Mitchell and Logan Mangold, and Brooke Stogner and Eli Jennings.
This year, each of these couples will receive two complimentary tickets to the FHS Prom.
Each couple will also receive a boutonniere and corsage, courtesy of Willow Blu florist in
Richland. “Willow Blu is very happy to provide event flowers for these special couples,” said
Amber Raymond, owner. “It’s nice to know that we have so many outstanding teens in our
Rankin County community.”
FHS plans to make the Promposal contest an annual event. To view the Promposal

Holland &Emilee
Holland Johnson is the go-getter type. He first enrolled at Florence
High School in the fall of 2016 as a sophomore. He hit the ground running
and hasn’t stopped since. Holland’s first order of business was to start a
Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) Club at school, which is one of the
busiest organizations at FHS. The club is currently involved in a project
they have titled “17 Acts of Kindness” which seeks to honor the 17 students
killed in the school shooting in Florida in February.
As outgoing as the RAK Club president is, his prom date is just as
soft-spoken and low key. Emilee Fowlkes is witty and intelligent but
prefers not to be the center of attention. Those qualities make it
interesting when planning a promposal.
Holland decided to surprise Emilee on her afternoon jog but ran into
some technical difficulties. Sporting a sign with a URL written on it, Holland
expected Emilee to grab her phone and enter the URL to access the
video he had made to ask her to prom. Problems arose when she didn’t
have her phone with her, he had no wi-fi access to show her the video on
his computer himself, and things went downhill from there. She did say
“yes,” we think. He didn’t capture that moment in the video.
