Mentoring, Job Rotation and
Attachments
Description: Mentoring involves the use of
experienced staff to provide individualized
support to other staff with less experience with
the goal of professional and personal
development. This type of initiative could be
used to train individuals who are preparing to
take on a leadership role or those who may need
to develop a specific skill or competency. Job
rotation, shadowing or attachments are job
design techniques in which employees are
moved between two or more jobs in a planned
manner. The objective is to expose the
employees to different experiences and wider
variety of skills to enhance job satisfaction and
to cross-train them within their MDA or across
MDAs. These types of initiatives could also be
used to develop core competencies.
Target Audience: This is suitable for
developing the core competencies but can also be
used for any of the ICT Job Families.
Requirements and Qualifications: No prerequisites
for this type of training.
Supply Chain Management
Description: Individuals in the ICT group
responsible for sourcing and purchasing may
want to obtain training in supply management.
This would develop the skills necessary for the
GoJ to manage the entire sourcing and
purchasing cycle for ICT related goods that are
needed to ensure that projects that depend on
these goods are not adversely impacted.
Training in this area can be as extensive as the
certified professional in supply management
(CPSM) offered by the Institute for Supply
Management (ISM). However, this could be
done in partnership with other tertiary
institutions that customize training for the
specific situations in Jamaica. In addition, inhouse
training from the procurement
department in the GoJ may also need to provide
continuous training on the Jamaica Procurement
Guidelines for ICT staff. This too may require
some customization for ICT specific sourcing if
necessary.
Target Audience: individuals who are primarily
involved in the operational side of purchasing
will benefit from this type of training.
Particularly ICT roles in the F08 Job Family are
the main target for this type of training.
Requirements and Qualifications: Any ICT
staff could take part in this training with zero
knowledge of the topics.
Six Sigma
Description: Six Sigma is an integrated,
disciplined, and proven approach for improving
business performance. Six Sigma's focus on
quality complements Lean techniques focused on
efficiencies; and, when combined, these skills
promote business and operational excellence.
Knowledge and skills developed in this type of
training aids organizations and businesses
improve production and minimize inefficiencies
from every product, process, and customer
transaction.
