Notice of Hydrant Flushing, Street Sweeping
and possible discolored water
The Lynnfield Center Water District will conduct water main flushing of
the distribution system during the hours of 9AM to 3PM on Mondays
through Thursdays through the first of June. This is part of the
ongoing regular maintenance of the water distribution system and is in
conjunction with the Lynnfield DPW street sweeping programs.
Residents may experience discolored water, which should clear after
running their cold water at the highest faucet within their house for a
short period of time. Residents are also advised to avoid doing
laundry during the flushing period and to check their water first by
running cold water for a few minutes after each day’s flushing period
before starting their washing machine. If a customer experiences
lower pressure at their faucet after the flushing, they should check the
faucet screen for particles which may have collected and clean it out if
necessary.
Customers may contact the Lynnfield Center Water District Office at
1.781.334.3901 or the District’s web site www.LCWD.US for more
Say no more to Sagamore
By Lindsey Ryan
The Lynnfield Town Hall
Meeting was heated and the
Lynnfield Middle School auditorium
was filled to capacity
Monday night with people
spilling into the entrance to the
auditorium, standing because
there were no available seats left.
The Sagamore Golf Course
saga continued throughout the
night starting with Article 14.
The article asked Town Meeting
to appropriate money from Golf
Enterprise receipts and/ or Golf
Enterprise Retained Earnings to
pay expenses and contractual
services required to operate the
Reedy Meadow Golf Course
and King Rail Golf course.
There was a motion to eliminate
the golf course. The accountant
stated there was a
profit of $47,000 with earnings
are ahead of expenditures. The
article still carried.
Article 19 brought the heat
from both sides. The article addressed
the issue to amend the
Town Zoning District Map. The
article also referred to changing
from Single Resident District
D to Elderly Housing District.
Potential traffic from the elderly
housing was mentioned,
and how more cars would cause
an even greater influx of traffic.
After long debates from both
sides Article 19 failed, and a
vote to reconsider the article
failed as well.
Articles 20 and 23 were referred
to the Planning Board for
further study.
Article 20 refers to the
Recodified Lynnfield Zoning
Bylaws to allow as a matter of
right, a private commercial golf
course in an Elderly Housing
District by amending Appendix
A, the Table of Use Regulations
Principle Uses D. Retail, Trade
and Restaurant.
Article 23 asked if the Town
will vote to amend the existing
“Zoning Map of the Town of
Lynnfield, MA. December,
1953” together with a duly adopted
amendments and revisions
thereto, as filed in the Office of the
Town Clerk so that the following
described parcel located on Main
Street and Janet Way, Essex
County, MA., Lots 147,783,1325
and 1488 be rezoned from the
Residence D District to Elderly
Housing District.
The Planning Board has five
elected members and the Board
is responsible for reviewing
proposed development projects
and making decisions on them
in accordance with state statutes
and local bylaws and regulations.
The board is also charged
with long-range planning for
the community, including creating
and updating the Town’s
Master Plan.
Article 4 gained particular
attention from a concerned
resident about her street not
being plowed. Article 4 passed.
The education budget was discussed,
and personnel positions
being cut were not appreciated
by many of the citizens, and
there was a motion to put the
jobs back on the budget.
“Treasure Socks” to solve the
problem of forgetting the vital
medication. The socks have
sewn in pockets that are great
for bringing medication on the
go, perfect for busy kids who
may fall victim to being forgetful
every once in awhile.
Ciampa may only be in
middle school, but he is a forward-thinking
businessman.
He came up with the idea for
“Treasure Socks” when he was
at camp, and did not have a
place to store his medication.
The socks are athletic socks,
and they are water resistant to
keep medication safe.
“I tried putting my medication
in my pocket one time and that
didn’t work, that’s how I originally
came up with the idea.”
Ciampa said. “I had nowhere to
put it and I thought ‘why can’t I
put this in my sock?’”
Ciampa attended the
Massachusetts Chapter of the
Young Entrepreneurs Academy,
hosted by the Peabody Area
Chamber of Commerce when
he was only 12-years-old. He
developed his business model
for “Treasure Socks,” and he
still uses the one minute pitch
he developed through the YEA
program.
“I had an idea for “Treasure
Socks”, and I had thought
maybe there are other ideas but
once I got into the program I realized
that this was the way to
go,” said Ciampa.
Going into the YEA program
Ciampa knew he was going to
run with his “Treasure Socks”
idea, giving him a head start in
creating the business model.
Maria Terris, Program
Manager for YEA and Events
Manager for the Peabody Area
Chamber of works with YEA
participants, ages 12-18, to
follow their business ambitions.
She was impressed with
Ciampa’s commitment to his
idea.
“His practice and his presentation
at the investor panel
helped him when he applied for
MassChallenge. He was able
to use his powerpoint, speech
cards, business plan and all of
his experience presenting in
front of a large group to get him
accepted into that program and
to be the youngest person ever
accepted into that international
program,” Terris said.
MassChallenge has a global
network of programs in Boston,
Israel, Mexico, Switzerland,
Texas, and the UK. Each year,
MassChallenge awards up to
$2 million in equity-free cash
prizes to help high-impact
startups succeed.
“Treasure Socks” was a
MassChallenge finalist in 2017,
and Ciampa was in the top five
for the MassChallenge Minute
to Pitch It competition. Ciampa
was also a finalist for Food
Allergy Research and Education
Rising Young Innovator of the
Year in 2017.
This year he was nominated
to the FARE Teen Advisory
Group. Ciampa is a finalist
in the New England Business
Association Innovation Awards
Program, which he will be attending
May 10.
“The YEA program really
helped me and its shaped my
future if I want to go into a career
in business.” he said. “It
really helps and I already know
what it takes to start a business
so if I have an idea I can start to
launch that idea.”
Ciampa’s business is currently
a Limited Liability
Company, which offers flexibility
and protection. He has
completed two rounds of sampling
with his socks, and received
a trademark approval
for “Treasure Socks” in July,
2017.
socks to be readily available on
the FARE website and to donate
money to the organization.
When Ciampa is not building
his “Treasure Socks” empire
he is a typical kid who wants
to have fun. He is an athlete,
playing basketball, soccer, and
baseball. He is on the Lynnfield
Middle School Math Team, and
he is on student council.
Despite his success, Ciampa
does not think about his business
daily, giving him time to
focus on his hobbies and allowing
him time to enjoy his
youth.
“I think about “Treasure
the seven days,” Ciampa said.
DANVERS — GED graduates
that scored in the College
Ready and College Ready +
Credit score levels may enroll
in North Shore Community
College with the option to bypass
placement testing.
This is the first time GED
graduates have been eligible
to use their GED Reading
and Language Arts (RLA)
and Mathematical Reasoning
test scores to enroll in credit-bearing
courses. North Shore
Community College is the first
in the state to accept the GED
College Ready score levels.
“GED scores provide an alternative
method for placing students
into college level courses.
We are pleased to include them
as one of the multiple measures
utilized in addition to placement
testing at North Shore
Community College”, said
NSCC Director of Alternative
Studies and Educational Testing,
Dr. Cristy Sugarman.
The GED College Ready
score level (165 or higher) indicates
that the test taker has
demonstrated the skills to start
college-level courses and depending
on the institution
they may not have to take a
placement test or any remedial
courses in college.
North Shore Community
College (NSCC) started accepting
the GED College Ready
score levels this year based
on the American Council on
Education (ACE) Credit® recommendation.
GED College
Ready scores will be accepted
at NSCC’s campuses in
Danvers, Lynn, and Middleton,
Massachusetts.
North Shore Community
College has an enrollment of
over 8,000 students and more
than 250,000 North Shore residents
have taken courses at
NSCC over the last 50 years.
North Shore Community
College joins a growing
number of college systems and
institutions that are accepting
the GED College Ready score
levels, saving GED graduates
time and money as they work
toward earning postsecondary
degrees and certificates.
In addition to this newly added
benefit for Massachusetts residents
enrolling at NSCC, recent
research has shown that GED
programs are preparing grads
very well for postsecondary programs.
Since the launch of the
enhanced GED program in 2014,
a higher percentage of graduates
are attending college programs,
enrolling more quickly, and are
more prepared than ever to succeed
in college and beyond. One
statistic shows a meteoric increase
in preparedness for college
certificate and degree programs.
Research conducted by GED
Testing Service, through a data
match with the National Student
Clearinghouse, revealed that:
● 45% of GED grads enrolled
in a college certificate or degree
program within three years,
● 35% do so within one year
of earning a GED credential,
and
● 90% of those enrolled persisted
by re-enroll from one semester
to the next.
“The most recent numbers
are very exciting, especially
when you compare the 90 percent
persistence rate to the pre-
2014 rate of 29 percent,” said
Randy Trask, President of GED
Testing Service. “Education and
credentials beyond a GED diploma
are the keys to unlocking
opportunity for adult learners
— opportunities for new career
pathways, higher wages, and
better quality of life.”
Massachusetts GED graduates
are well positioned in the workforce,
especially after earning a
certificate or degree in addition
to a GED credential. This is especially
important as the vast
majority of new jobs that will
be created over the next two
decades will require more than
a high-school-level credential.
An estimated 2.5 million new
middle skill jobs (those that require
post-high school education
but not a four-year college degree)
are expected to be added to
the U.S. workforce, accounting
for nearly 40 percent of all job
growth.
GED test program can be found
Peabody teen is turning up the heat in the kitchen
By Lindsey Ryan
PEABODY — Jacob
Bettencourt isn’t the poster boy
for teenage entrepreneurship
- yet.
The 18-year-old Peabody
native created “The Sizzle
Sleeve,” a heat-retardant fabric
cuff that starts at the wrist and
ends at the elbow, thus protecting
the forearm from burns.
The Massachusetts Chapter
of the Young Entrepreneurs
Academy (YEA), hosted by
the Peabody Area Chamber
of Commerce, presented
Bettencourt with a $1,000
scholarship and picked him
to represent YEA Peabody as
their semi-finalist at the YEA
National Saunders Scholarship
Competition at Rochester
Institute of Technology, in
Rochester, NY on May 4.
Creating a business has been
an entirely new experience
for Bettencourt, something he
never thought possible before
the program.
“I never made a business
plan, I never had a logo before...I
never imagined something
I made could have that
effect,” he said.
The YEA program is a national
program that has been
operational for 12 years and the
YEA Massachusetts Chapter
hosted by the Peabody Area
Chamber of Commerce started
in the year 2015.
Maria Terris, Program
Manager for YEA and Events
Manager for the Peabody
chamber, has been the backbone
of this program, helping
children ages 12-18 follow their
business ambitions, including
Bettencourt.
Terris diligently follows her
entrepreneurs, making sure they
check their emails, and respond
in a timely manner while they
are in the program for three ten
week sessions.
“She works really hard, I
will get an email saying ‘finish
this,’” Bettencourt said.
Essex Technical High School
senior maintains a relentless
schedule: He works 40 hours a
week as a line cook at Brooksby
Village Retirement Community,
and participates in the YEA
program with its 30 week-long
time commitment.
Sizzle Sleeve grew out of
his first-hand experience in a
working kitchen. It can protect
against temperatures upwards
of 350 degrees and the sleeve
comes in multiple sizes.
“When you cook no matter
what happens you tend to get
knicks and burns...I tried to find
a product like this online and I
couldn’t really find anything
like this,” said Bettencourt.
Bettencourt wants The Sizzle
Sleeve to reach a larger market,
and hopes one day it will be a
requirement for chefs’ uniform.
Part of the YEA experience is
lining up financing for business
ventures.
“One of the things the YEA
kids have to do is they have to
develop a business plan which
includes financials so they have
an ask for the investors in our
shark tank. Jacob had asked
for $717 that’s what he felt he
PHOTO | SPENSER HASAK
Jacob Bettencourt is the owner of Sizzle Sleeve, a protective,
flame retardant arm covering for culinary professionals made
from flexible material.
would need for a three month
start up funding and he was
awarded the full amount,” said
Terris.
With that money, Bettencourt
would like to work on the material
so it can sustain more heat,
finding stronger and lighter
velcro, and launch the business.
YEA participants develop a
business idea in the program’s
first 10 weeks. The second 10
weeks focus on fine-tuning a
sales pitch to business investors.
It is the investor panel
which decides if entrepreneurs
are awarded funding.
The third 10 weeks is when
the entrepreneurs launch their
business.
As a semi-finalist in
Rochester, Bettencourt will
only have three minutes to pitch
his idea, with only his business
logo behind him.
If he does not go over his
time limit and investors like
his product he will move on
to the finals. From the six finalist,
three will be chosen as
first-, second-,and third-place
winners. If he wins the finals,
Bettencourt will win a $30,000
scholarship to RIT, as well as
business packages.
“It’s really what you say and
how you say it in three minutes
that will convince the investors
to move him to the finals,”
Terris said.
Bettencourt is manufacturing
The Sizzle Sleeve at home.
After his senior year, he will
attend Keene State College in
New Hampshire where he will
study occupational safety science
and sustainable product
design, which aligns with his
business.
“I really want to improve the
design and make it even lighter
and make it so that it can take
more heat, and make it more
breathable.” said Bettencourt.
“ I want to keep evolving this
product.”
Bettencourt donates five percent
of proceeds to Shriners
Hospitals for Children to help
burn victims. According to the
CDC, 1.1 million burn injuries
require medical attention in the
U.S..
“I really want to give back,
and I really want to make my
products locally instead of
being shipped overseas,” he
said.
The Massachusetts Chapter
of the YEA is $395, and includes
classes and materials.
Financial aid and scholarships
are available based on need.
Terris’ goal for the upcoming
year is to have 16 entrepreneurs
in her class, and students
can participate for more than
one year if needed. For more
MEDICATIONS AND LIVER HEALTH
While we may pay relatively little attention to our livers, it should be noted
that the liver is the largest solid, internal organ in the body and that it plays a
key role in body metabolism, detoxification, and waste removal. Unfortunately,
the incidence of chronic liver disease is increasing due to several factors.
Approximately 5.5 million Americans have chronic liver disease or “cirrhosis”
(severe liver scarring), which compromises their quality of life and longevity.
To better preserve the liver’s health and functional capability, it’s important to
use medications only when medically necessary. In particular, it is important
to carefully monitor acetaminophen usage, which is a common cause of liver
damage. The maximum adult dosage is 4,000 milligrams over 24 hours.
Statins and other drugs can increase the levels of liver enzymes and cause
minor liver damage but no symptoms. Even some medicinal herbs contain
substances that can damage the liver. Drinking alcohol increases the risk of
liver damage because alcohol harms the liver and changes the way drugs are
metabolized. For more information, please call VILLAGE PHARMACY at
781-334-3133 or see us in the Colonial Shopping Center. For your convenience,
we offer free prescription delivery five days a week and scheduled
weekend deliveries upon request.
HINT: Those who have liver problems, regularly consume alcohol, use
acetaminophen habitually, or are elderly may need to take less acetaminophen
or avoid taking it altogether in order to avoid damaging their livers.
Hawes is NJCAA Player of the Week
By Anne Marie Tobin
Former Lynnfield High baseball and football
standout Kyle Hawes was honored by the National
Junior College Athletic Association April 25
as the national Division 3 Baseball Player of the
Week for the week ending April 22.
Hawes, a freshman outfielder on the Northern
Essex Community College baseball team, batted
.524 for the week. He smacked five extra base hits,
knocked in 16 runs and set NECC single game records
for home runs (3) and RBI (12), both in an
April 18 game against Mass Bay Community College
when he also hit for the cycle. He followed
April 20 with a 3-for-5 (run, RBI) performance
against Quinsigamond, then wrapped up the week
going 2-for-6 with 3 runs and 3 RBI in a doubleheader
against UConn Avery Point on April 22.
On hitting for the cycle, Hawes said he totally
surprised.
“That’s something that happens so rarely, that I
never thought I could or would ever do that, not in
a million years,” he said. “I needed a triple in my
last at bat and my teammates were all joking about
it, so I was relaxed and knew it was just a matter
of getting good pitch to hit. I probably could have
made it home, but my coach (Jeff Mejia) held me
at third because the game was already lop-sided,
so it wouldn’t have been right to keep going.”
Another one of Hawe’s coaches isn’t surprised
by his performance this spring.
“He was the Co-MVP of our team last year along
with Justin Juliano, and he has come a long way
and worked very hard,” said Lynnfield coach John
O’Brien. “I am glad to see him do well. He’s a
kid with a terrific personality, but knows how be
fierce. He’s another kid who is good for our program,
he’s another kid who has proven he can play
at the next level.”
Hawes, a 2017 Lynnfield High graduate and
2017 Cape Ann League First Team All-Star, is one
of two former Pioneers playing at NECC. Spencer
Balian, a 2016 Lynnfield High grad, is also in his
rookie season at NECC playing primarily at first
base for the Knights. Northern Essex is scheduled
to close out the regular season Sunday with a pair
of doubleheaders at the University of Connecticut
at Avery Point.
After that, the Knights will have a week off before
beginning its defense of the NJCAA Region
21 title on May 11-13 (TBA). The Knights have
won six straight regional titles and last year made
it all the way to the NJCAA Division 3 World Series,
where they finished runner-up.
Fernando Gonzalez pitched a complete-gamer 5-hitter in the Pioneers’ win over
Georgetown.
Pioneers nip Georgetown
By Mike Alongi
LYNNFIELD — Fernando Gonzalez
did it all for the Lynnfield baseball team on
Thursday in the Pioneers’ 2-1 win over visiting
Georgetown.
Gonzalez, a junior left-hander, tossed a
complete game on the mound, giving up one
run on five hits with 10 strikeouts. Gonzalez
(1-for-3) also delivered the game-winning
hit in the sixth when he smashed a 2-out
double into the gap in right-center.
“When he’s on, he’s really tough to hit
because he’s got three pitches,” said Lynnfield
coach John O’Brien said of Gonzalez.
“It took him a little while to get settled
in this one, but once he did, he got into a
groove and never left it.”
The Royals jumped out to an early 1-0
lead right in the top of the first.
The Pioneers came back with a run in the
bottom of the first. Dan Jameson drew a
walk and stole second. Matt Fiore reached
on an error with Jameson advancing to
third. Fiore stole second, then cleanup hitter
Cooper Marengi knocked home Jameson
with a groundout to even the score at 1-1.
Both teams squandered scoring chances
in the fifth, but the Pioneers found pay
dirt in the sixth and took the lead for good.
Jonathan Luders got hit by pitch then stole
second base to open the inning. Two outs
later, Marengi worked a walk to extend the
inning for Gonzalez, who smashed a bullet
to drive in Luders and give the Pioneers a
2-1 lead.
“We had been scrapping for hits the
whole game, and had only three total, so
that inning was a big one,” O’Brien said. “It
was a great job by each guy that went up
there to keep the inning alive for Fernando,
and that hit was as clutch as could be.”
That was all Gonzalez needed, as he came
out in the top of the seventh inning and
struck out the side to seal the 2-1 victory for
the Pioneers.
With the win, Lynnfield improved to 6-2
this season.
Lynnfield’s scheduled game with Amesbury
Saturday was washed out. The Pioneers’
next game is today at Manchester-Essex
(3:45).
By Anne Marie Tobin
The Lynnfield girls softball took on the
iron of the Cape Ann League Monday
and gave undefeated host North Reading
at 6-0, all it could handle before going
down in eight innings, 6-5.
The game was back-and-forth with
Lynnfield leading 4-3 after four, and the
Hornets coming back to lead 5-4 after
five. Lynnfield (5-4) scratched out a run
in the top of the seventh, then starter Hayley
O’Brien, who also had a monster day
at the plate, set down the Hornets (7-0) in
the bottom of the inning to send the game
into extra innings where the Hornets won
in a walkoff.
“We did a lot of good things, we hit
their fast pitching better than we do
against pitchers who can’t break a pane
of glass,” said coach Peter Marinelli. “To
play that kind of a game against the best
team in the league and out-hit them 10-8,
is encouraging. I told the girls that if they
play defense and hit like that, we can play
with anybody.”
Marinelli said catcher Allie Wing had a
great defensive game.
O’Brien (3-for-4, 3 RBI, run) sent the
game into extras with an RBI single in the
top of the seventh that scored Jenna Freni,
on base by an error. Breanna Serabian
(2-for-4, run) ripped two doubles, while
Wing had one. Chloe Shapleigh (2-for-
3, run) and Jillian Babine (2-4, RBI) had
multiple hit games.
Lynnfield 3, Georgetown 1
At Georgetown Thursday, Serabian
led the offense with two RBI. O’Brien
pitched a 2-hitter and struck out 13 with
one walk. O’Brien also flashed the glove,
stabbing a hard line drive headed for extra
bases to snuff a Royals’ rally.
PHOTO | ANNE MARIE TOBIN
Hayley O’Brien did all she could to
help Lynnfield beat North Reading,
going 3-for-4 with an RBI, but in the
end, the Hornets prevailed.
The Pioneers opened the scoring in
the top of third when Wing led off with
a walk and reached second on Freni’s
single. Shapleigh was hit by a pitch to
load the bases for Serabian, who brought
Wing home from third with a sacrifice fly
to left, putting the Pioneers on top, 1-0.
In the fifth, Freni reached second on an
infield error, then came home on a double
by Shapleigh. Serabian singled Shapleigh
home to make it 3-0

Stone is state girls tennis coach of the year
By Anne Marie Tobin
LYNNFIELD — And the beat just
keeps on going for Lynnfield legend
Craig Stone. Already one of the most
successful high school coaches ever in
Massachusetts with more than 1,100
wins coaching girls tennis and wrestling
at Lynnfield High, Stone, now in his
82nd season of coaching, continues to
raise the bar.
Stone has received more awards and
honors than can be counted, including
National Wrestling Hall of Fame honors,
Boston Globe Coach of the Year honors
(4 times) and Boston Herald Coach of
the Year honors.
He practically owns the Cape Ann
League Coach of the Year Award, having
won it the last four years and 12 times in all.
Last April, Stone even received a special
proclamation from the chairman of
the Board of Selectmen, Phil Crawford,
and a citation from state senator Thomas
McGee in recognition of his outstanding
career and his Hall of Fame election.
Last week, Stone learned he was the
recipient of the 2018 MIAA Girls Tennis
Coach of the Year Award.
“I was very pleased to win the award
as it is a feather in the cap of our tennis
program here in Lynnfield,” Stone said.
“It is always nice to be recognized by
your town, your peers and your fellow
coaches. In Lynnfield, I am fortunate that
when it comes to girls tennis, kids start
talking about it in elementary school because
of the tradition, so they come to
the high school ready to play. It’s a nice
trickle-down effect.”
Stone will receive the award
Thursday, May 24 at the MIAA Awards
Recognition Banquet at the Doubletree
Hotel in Milford. The award also carries
a nomination for the National Federation
of High Schools 2018-2019 Section 1
Girls Tennis Coach of the Year.
Stone took over as coach of the
Pioneers in 1981. He was 5-7 that year,
and improved to 6-6 in 1982. Since
then, the Pioneers have posted winning
Pioneers ace North Reading
By Anne Marie Tobin
LYNNFIELD — The Lynnfield High girls tennis
team (4-1) rode a strong performance from its doubles
teams to pull out a 3-2 win over CAL rival North
Reading Thursday at the middle school.
Gillian Skelley and Emma Gallucci needed only 30
minutes to clinch their first doubles match over Alexa
Galuppo and Megan Landers 6-3, 6-0 to stake the Pioneers
to a quick 1-0 lead.
Some two hours later, the second doubles team of
senior captain Makayla Maffeo and Clare Yang defeated
Jillian Coveney and Haley MacIntyre, 6-3, 6-2
to secure match point.
Megan Nevils also won, taking her match at first
singles over Tia Carpenter, 6-3, 6-2.
“I knew coming into the match that it would be a
close one,” said Lynnfield coach Craig Stone, who
learned Wednesday that he had been named the
2018 MIAA Girls Tennis Coach of the Year. “North
Reading was 4-0 and they have had some nice wins
HIGH SCHOOL SCHEDULE
earlier in the year. We saw them at the league open
and knew it would be a good test. The nice thing
today was we had a chance to win every match.”
While the Pioneers prevailed, the match did not
start well for Lynnfield, especially for Skelley/Gallucci.
“They actually got off to a slow start and were
down 3-2 at one point, then they came back and won
nine games in a row,” said Stone. “They are a very
solid team. They have done well, their only loss so
far has been to Manchester.”
Junior captain Alexa Vittiglio lost a marathon of a
match at second singles, 6-4, 5-7, 4-6.
“She had so many game points in that second set
to force a tie-breaker,” Stone said. “We say that you
have to play 2-point tennis, meaning you have win
two points in a row, but neither player could do that
today.”
Lynnfield exchange student Bella Ferreira lost at
third singles, 2-6, 2-6.
PHOTO | ANNE MARIE TOBIN
Craig Stone says he’s fortunate to
be coaching Lynnfield because of its
tennis tradition.
records and qualified for the tournament
35 straight years, winning state titles in
1992, 1997-1999 and 2014. Stone has
led the Pioneers to the North sectional
Catering
available
tournament finals 25 times, winning 14
North titles along with 17 CAL titles.
Stone led the Pioneers on an amazing
run in the late 90’s. From 1997-1999,
Stone’s teams dominated the tennis
scene, posting a 60-1 record and winning
three straight state Division 2 championships.
The Pioneers were undefeated in
1998-1999 at 44-0 and were also undefeated
in 2014 (21-0) when the Pioneers
captured the Division 3 championship.
Going into the 2018 spring season,
Stone’s tennis record was 584-87.
With a 4-1 record, going into yesterday’s
Amesbury match, his combined
career record now stands at 1125-429-6.
Stone said that, to his knowledge,
only two Massachusetts high coaches
have won more games than Stone, and
both are deceased: Vi Goodnow, who
won 1,224 coaching field hockey, basketball
and softball at Frontier Regional,
and Emile Johnson, who won 1,250
games coaching basketball and soccer at
Leominster.
Let’s just say it was a very good day for the Pioneers,
who posted eight top-10 finishes in all.
The highlight of the meet was the performance of the
1600 sprint medley relay team of senior Juliana Passatempo,
freshman Lauren Braconnier, freshman Ashley
Mitchell and senior Kate Mitchell who blitzed the rest
of the field and finished first in 4:14.67, some seven seconds
ahead of runner-up Norwell.
“They were fantastic,” said coach Christine Smith.
“They won by at least 20 meters, if not more.”
Passatempo, freshman April Luders and senior Aja
Parker had big days with three top-10 finishes each.
Smith was very pleased with the Pioneers’ performance.
“They did a great job yesterday and are improving with
every meet,” she said. “Especially since the (junior)
prom was on Friday!”
Passatempo, Luders and the Mitchell sisters placed
seventh in the 4x400 in 4:20.86.
Parker, sophomore Megan Battaglia, sophomore Carolyn
Garofoli and Passatempo rounded out the Pioneers’
top-10 finishes in track events with a ninth place effort in
the 4x100 shuttle hurdle relay in 1:16.68.
“That was Juliana’s first attempt ever at the high hurdles
and she had the quickest split time,” said Smith.
The Pioneers placed top-10 in each of the five field
events.
