The Dagwood celebrates
THE Dagwood
Family Restaurant More than 50 years of supplying delicious food
in The Mall in
Brewery Lane has long
been a favourite
among residents of
our town and those
from further afield.
No one knows
exactly when it was
started, but what is
certain is that it has
been the place of
choice for more than
50 years for residents
wanting to go out for a
meal, to get a
delicious takeaway
lunch or supper, for
visitors to stop and
rest for a while as they
have a meal or a
coffee break from
shopping or just for
young people to hang
out with a milkshake
or an ice-cream.
The Dagwood used
to be situated in
Cathcart Road and
was taken over by
Andrew and Liesl Nel
in 2000, making this
their 18th year in the
business.
It is managed for
them by general
manageress Mechell
Stander and manager
Antoinette Kriek, with
Lizanne Ferreira as the

to The Mall, to even
bigger and better
premises, where the
support of the public
has made them the
success story they are
t o d ay.
The Dagwood now
employs 25 people, all
geared to contribute to
the family-friendly
restaurant atmosphere
with its extraordinary
comfort food.
In addition to the
normal takeaways,
platters to take away
may also be ordered
for functions and there
is a smaller private
function venue that
may be booked for
small parties.
But despite the
growth and success,
the Dagwood still
prides itself on still
serving the same
great-tasting, fresh
and fabulous food they
have done for the past
18 years, and even
before that. All dishes
are freshly prepared
and each is made in
the Dagwood kitchen
to their own secret
recipes. They only sell
A-grade steaks and
the best prawns in
town – to mention just
a few.
May has been
chosen to celebrate
the more than 50
years of the
Dagwood’s existence
as it also marks the 18
years it has belonged
to the Nels.
To mark this happy
occasion an
up-and-coming artists
from Durban, Rowan
Stuart, will entertain at
the Dagwood on May
