Mbana, who currently
lives with her sister,
Noluthando Qoza, made
headlines last year
when she mysteriously
disappeared from home
and was found days
later in an East London
hospital.
The Daily Dispatch
last year reported the
mentally disturbed
Mbana was run over by
a car which left the
scene and the victim
was found by passersby
which resulted in her
being hospitalised in
East London.
The alarm about
Mbana’s house was
raised by ANC ward
councillor Mncedisi
Mbengo who reported
the matter to Enoch
Mgijima Local
Municipalit y’s former
mayor, Lindiwe
Gunuza-Nkwentsha.
Mbengo indicated
Gunuza-Nkwentsha did
everything she could
while still mayor to help
Mbana and ensure a
house would be built for
h e r.
“The former mayor
consulted with relevant
officers in Chris Hani
District Municipality
(CHDM) who took it
upon themselves to
help Mbana. The
construction to the
house will commence
this week.
“This act of kindness
by local government
includes six other
houses to be built for
indigent families.
“I had to write a
motivational letter to
CHDM on why these
seven houses had to
take priority and why
the families needed
Known as a
natural yellow
dye, but it’s so
much more
TURMERIC has been and still is a commonly used
natural dye for foods such as rice, and even
c l ot h i n g .
For many years in the East, turmeric has been
used as an effective medicine too.
This spice has been linked to having a role in
preventing cancer development and Alzheimer’s
disease.
The active ingredient in turmeric that has been
so well researched, is named curcumin. Curcumin
has proven to have powerful anti-inflammatory
effects which can relieve pain when taken in the
right doses. This may be especially helpful if you
suffer from arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease or
any other chronic inflammatory condition.
Curcumin relaxes the smooth muscles of the
digestive tract, supports healing of the colon and
assists in lowering high blood sugar levels. Studies
show how curcumin even reduces gas and bloating.
The active ingredient called piperine gives black
pepper its pungent
flavour and it
enhances
absorption of
nutrients and
medications (herbal
and drug). Science
shows how black
pepper even
increases turmeric
absorption, so best
to use these two
spices together.
Excessive doses
of turmeric can thin the blood and may cause
stomach upset. Turmeric should be avoided if you
take blood thinner medications or if you are due for
surgery or have gall bladder disease. This is to
avoid complications. It is considered safe for
pregnant women to have turmeric in low doses.
Turmeric tea is enjoyed more in the East, best
prepared with a little black pepper and honey. It is
such a warm spice and is often part of curry
powders. However, turmeric does not give a strong,
hot burn-like flavour. It can add thickness to stews
and soups. There are also turmeric capsules
available. However, you can easily incorporate this
versatile spice into your cooking for health benefits.
Turmeric is related to ginger. The commonly
available deep yellow turmeric spice is derived
from grinding the underground stem/root of the
plant. Turmeric literally can brighten up our day by
giving you more colourful foods, but it also may
brighten up your body when eaten with your meals.
