OOIDA to fight excessive PA
turnpike tolls in court
The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers
Association has filed a class-action lawsuit
against the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission
for excessive toll increases that place an
undue burden on interstate commerce while
improperly diverting toll revenue to other
projects unrelated to the turnpike.
payments, prevent PennDOT from the spending
the money it received from the turnpike, and to
refund the money to turnpike users.
“The tolls charged far exceed the value of the
use of turnpike and the costs to maintain it,”
said Todd Spencer, acting president and CEO of
OOIDA. “Truckers have especially overpaid the
price at as much as 70 cents per mile.”
The lawsuit was filed in the Middle District
of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg and says
OOIDA and the National Motorists
Association have requested an injunction to halt
the turnpike from overcharging customers to
pay for non-turnpike projects, stop the turnpike
from borrowing money to help make PennDOT
that federal interstate commerce laws for the
turnpike hold that tolls can only be used to
maintain or expand the 359-mile highway for
which the tolls are levied.
KENWORTH T680 DAY CAB WITH HYDROGEN
FUEL CELL ON DISPLAY
With an eye toward the future,
a zero-emission Kenworth T680
day cab equipped with a hydrogen
fuel cell is on display at the
2018 Consumer Electronics Show (CES),
which opened Tuesday in Las Vegas.
The Kenworth T680 day cab’s fuel cell
combines compressed hydrogen gas and
air to produce electricity with only water
vapor emitted at the tailpipe. This electricity
can power the dual-rotor electric motor
to move the truck, or it can recharge the
The truck is part of the Paccar Innovations
booth exhibit.
It is the first time Paccar and Kenworth
have exhibited at the show, which draws
close to 200,000 visitors.
The vehicle is part of the Zero Emission
Cargo Transport (ZECT) demonstration
project managed through Southern California’s
South Coast Air Quality Management
District (SCAQMD).
lithium-ion batteries for use later. The
hybrid drive system manages the power
from the fuel cell to and from the batteries,
as well as the traction motors and other
components, such as the electrified power
steering and brake air compressor.
TECH
“Kenworth’s hydrogen
fuel-cell T680 is a reality,”
said Stephan Olsen,
Kenworth director of
product planning. “The
T680 has been running
trials in the Seattle area
and performing very well.
The next step is realworld
testing with Total
Transportation Services
Inc. (TTSI) at the ports of
Los Angeles and Long
Beach in Southern California.”
According to Olsen,
the hydrogen fuel-cell
based Kenworth T680
will have an initial range of 150 miles,
which makes it ideal for short haul and port
operations.
With a dual-rotor traction motor output
of 565 hp, the truck is capable of carrying
the legal gross combination weight of a
Class 8 vehicle.
“Our testing shows that this truck
performs equally as well, if not better, than
current diesel trucks on the market,” Olsen
said. “There is a lot of promise, and we
see the day where Kenworth’s zero and
near-zero emission trucks could be a common
sight in regional operations. Kenworth
is heavily focused on the evaluation and
development of both zero and near-zero
emission solutions for the trucking industry.”
Olsen said the market is being driven
by progressive states, such as California,
where clean air is mandated.
To develop the hydrogen-based T680,
Kenworth is supported by $2.8 million in
funding under a larger grant from the U.S.
Department of Energy (DOE) Office of
Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy
(EERE), with Southern California’s South
Coast Air Quality Management District
(SCAQMD) being the prime
applicant.
Project oversight is provided
by the Center for Transportation
and the Environment (CTE).
Kenworth is also working on a
second project under the larger
program for DOE and SCAQMD
to develop a near-zero emission-capable
T680 day cab
using a near-zero natural gas
engine and generator to extend
the battery range.
Trucker Paul Barton: Military to Trucking
It’s not every day a student can
prove a teacher wrong, but trucker
Paul Barton has done it his whole
career.
“I get to think back on a teacher
when I was in high school that told
me, ‘You will never get paid looking
out the window.’ Well Miss Hart, I
get paid for looking out the window,”
said Barton, 66.
The 42-year career trucker is
an owner-operator, driving a 2000
Freightliner FLD 120 flat top and
pulling a step deck for Admiral
Merchants Motor Freight Inc. out of
Minneapolis. He is out on the road
typically eight weeks at a time, driving the
lower 48.
Barton has amassed about four million
miles, which is a feat, considering he never
saw himself as a trucker.
“A friend offered me to go for a ride in a
truck. I’d never been in a truck and I was
a cab driver back then,” he said. It was
the mid-70s and on one trip, his friend let
him drive the tractor on a dead-end road in
Berkley, California. “It was all with the idea
of now I can say, ‘I’ve done this,’ that was
all it was about.”
Growing up as a military brat, Barton’s
dream was always to serve his country.
He signed up for the U.S. Marine Corps
through the CWO (chief warrant officer)
program during the Vietnam War in the
hope of flying helicopters. However, he
could never go and found out why when
his father, Louis “Buddy” Barton died in
2009.
“They explained to me it because my
dad kept volunteering every time I was to
go to boot camp … the rules were if your
father is in a combat zone you cannot go if
you’re the only blood son. My brother was
adopted. So every time I was supposed to
do this, he was in Vietnam. He did this for
two and a half years, doing 90-day tours
over there. He kept me out of Vietnam,”
Barton said, adding that he was shocked
to find out. His dad was a tech sergeant in
the U.S. Air Force for 27 years. “My dad
has always been my hero. Of course we
haven’t always seen eye to eye. He was
in Korea and Vietnam and to me that says
a whole lot about a man. Being a military
brat, that’s all you think about.”
44 www.TruckDriverMagazines.com TRUCKING 2018
Though he couldn’t follow his dream, the
trucking industry became his life.
“I thought, ‘well I’m only going to do this
for a little bit,’” and purchased a 1973
International cabover in 1976. “I never
intended to do it for a career. I’m the first
truck driver in my family.”
The trucking industry has gone through
challenges in every generation and Barton
said he remembers well the widespread
trucker strikes in 1980.
“The Teamsters were on strike and they
were hanging bricks from the overpasses
and a driver got hit by one and it knocked
him out,” Barton said. His truck plowed
into the side of a mountain by Hershey,
Pennsylvania, on I-76. “I pulled over. Luckily
a trooper pulled up and wanted to know
what was going on. I said, ‘this guy is hurt
bad, he’s bleeding on his face and he’s
out.’ The officer and I were able to get him
upright and he kind of came to.”
The trooper called for an ambulance and
to make room, Barton left and never found
out what happened to the man.
There are countless stories of tough moments
on the road and Barton said a big
key to preventing some tragedies is safety.
“Get a CB and stay off the phone. [New
truckers] don’t pay attention and they
don’t look in the mirrors. They’re focusing
straight ahead. Well you only look out the
window maybe 25 percent of the time and
the other 75 percent of the time
is checking your mirrors for stuff
that’s going on alongside you,” he
said.
That kind of safety mentality has
served Barton well, especially with
unique loads. His largest load was
a cell tower, which was about 13
feet wide and grossing 120,000
pounds.
“Pay attention; know where you’re
at and where everybody else is at.
You’ve got to think ahead like [for]
bridges. On freeways, the bridges
always seem to be a little narrower,”
Barton said.
When he is at home in Sacramento,
California, he can be found cruising
around on his Harley Davidson throughout
what he called “Gold Country, California,
and the coast to the Redwood Forests.
Those are a couple of the best areas to
ride.”
Barton admits when he joined the industry
at 24 years old, “it was just a whim.”
But it’s a whim he’ll follow for as long as
he’s able.
“‘Til they throw dirt on me,” he said.
