Mapping Meaning, The Journal Introduction "824 Min Surveying party of girls on the Minidoka project." Original caption, National Archives The History In 1918, an all-female survey crew posed for a photograph while working on the Minidoka Dam Project in Idaho, U.S.A. Almost a century later, Krista Caballero, founder of Mapping Meaning, came across the photo while researching her masters of fine art. The image was accompanied by little archival information, but the close bounds of the composed frame contrasted sharply with other survey photographs of the time depicting men within vast, epic landscapes. The women’s smiles and the painted hearts on their leveling rods further piqued Caballero’s interest. Who were these women? What were their stories? Why the hearts? Issue N o 1 7
