Sheep Dogs With sheep dogs, there are three types. You have a bark dog that barks and has sheep running everywhere. These dogs are usually okay for the sheep yards but no good in the paddock. Then there is an eye dog. These dogs will be the best in the paddock as they keep an eye on the mob at all mes and keep the sheep as a mob and not spread out. The third is a u lity dog which is good at both. Over the years, we have had many sheep dogs. I have always made some sort of a sheep dog out of each pup we have had. Some of them are naturals and some need a lot of training and discipline. There are two absolute standout dogs. One was when I was a boy. Dad had a sheep dog called Flossy. Dad would send her up the paddock and she would bring the sheep in by herself, so long as she could s ll see you. The next one was very special. He was a Kelpie / Border Collie cross named Sam. Sam was a true u lity dog. He was good with children, good in the sheep yards and very good in the paddock. One day I had Linley’s Dad, Eric Page out and we went to the ram paddock to bring the rams in. Sam jumped off the ute and, when I gestured, started bringing the rams in. We a ended to a fence for a while. When we arrived at the sheep yards, Sam had them in the yards and up to the shearing shed door. He couldn’t open the door. Lin’s Dad was very impressed. On another occasion, we sent sheep up the lane to go over the main road into No 11. Sam followed them, and we thought we had me to do another job before joining him. When we arrived at the main road Sam already had the mob over the road into a short lane the other side. Two sheep had missed the gate and were trying to follow the mob the wrong side of the fence. Sam knew they were wrong and was trying to get them back through the gate. If I went into a paddock that had four different gates into other paddocks, I would just gesture with my hand for Sam to bring them in. He would jump off the ute and take the mob to the gate I had le open. These are very special dogs worth several men when working sheep. Another occasion, he was in the box on the back of the motor bike and when he went to jump off he caught his leg in a broken board and dislocated it. I put him on my lap and took him home to the house yard, while I brought the mob in for the carrier. Sam heard me coming down the lane and with dislocated leg, somehow climbed over the gate to come and help on three legs. 29
