This lead me to be asked to do a presenta on at their client workshop on how this
gene c gain had turned into $$$’s for us. They had about 60 growers there. They
wanted me to do two more workshops for their clients up north but I couldn’t oblige
as we were going on our interna onal canola trip that we had won.
For the input, I provided to Woodyarrup and taking some of our hogget ewes for
client display at their field days, they gave us a free ram.
In 1959, Dad cleared No 13 as he needed more land. This paddock had copious
quan es of ironstone rock. It was cleared with a T6 crawler (26hp bulldozer) with
small blade towing a white gum log wider than the blade. It could only knock down
mallee and small trees. Any trees that were taller than the chain pulling the log, the
trees would come forward when the log hit them and crash around your ears.
Before the logged trees were burnt in No. 13, Dad had purchased Harry Anderson’s
farm, Montalta. If that happened before clearing No 13 it may not have ever been
cleared. With low tyne pressure, it pulled up quite a few rocks. When we put
hydraulic tynes with high break out, it pulled up thousands. No one was prepared to
pick them all so it was pasture for many years un l 2015 when we bought shares in
a rock ripper and crusher with Neville Harris family and Sco Crosby. This transformed
the paddock into very produc ve land with no rocks. This roller, full of
water, weighed about 19 tonnes.
ROCK CRUSHER
This machine is used on all the ironstone areas in each paddock, doing some more
each year. When you hit solid ironstone, it would stop the 500hp 4WD John Deere
tractor. You can’t use this machine on granite or limestone rock as it is too hard.
