Family Reunion of 75 Years at Sunnyside
To celebrate the 75th year since my grandfather, Walter James Filmer, selected the
land to become known as “Sunnyside Farm” in 1910, Linley and I invited all his
descendants to a reunion on the farm. It was on 7 September 1985 and 51 of the 68
descendants a ended a great day of remembrance.
Descendants of Walter James Filmer…
Bolto, Gilpin, Filmer, Hersey, Leathard, and Wya families
We were in the early stage of organising the 100th year reunion when my Dad fell
over and broke his hip. He did not recover too well, so we abandoned the reunion.
We have a photo of Dad with the fence that was 90 years old along Ward Rd. We
had to replace it because the posts where ge ng red. The wire was s ll good
because in those days they put a lot more zinc galvanising on the wire than they do
now. This stopped it ge ng rusty. One of Dad’s first jobs when he started farming at
15-year-old was to bore a hole at ground level with a ratchet hand drill for a bo om
wire to hold the sheep ne ng down to stop the kangaroos pushing underneath.
