canola varie es for them to test. I thought I needed to know more about each
variety, so I measured germina on rates, disease, the maturity, by coun ng the
flowers per sq. metre when they first developed. When they harvested them, I did
up all my informa on, added it to the harvest results and presented it to them.
They were very pleased with my effort for them.
FARMER SOWN CANOLA TRIALS AT SUNNYSIDE 1997
Some weeks I would receive up to four phone calls from other growers around the
state about how to grow canola.
I did canola judging with someone from the Department in our area down as far as
south Kojonup.
In my farming, I would enter compe ons to learn. I would be able to compare
myself against my farming peers and if I didn’t win I would see how the winner did it
to improve my farming. One example of this was in the hogget ewe compe on. I
liked what Ross Crosby did with his breeding which gave me a vision of where we
should go in our sheep breeding.
I always said if I won something it was a bonus. We did win many bonuses in our
farming career. These came from The Nyabing and Katanning Shows in wool, sheep,
crop and inven ons. Also, local wheat and barley compe ons, hogget ewe and
wether trials.
