Early Tractors on Sunnyside
Gas Producing Tractor
This tractor had a Gas Producer on it. When petrol was scarce during the war they
would dig a hole in the ground and fill it up with Mallee roots, set fire to it and when
it was all red-hot coals they would place n on top and then cover it with soil to
starve the coals of air and put the fire out. When it was all cold they would remove
the soil and n to expose the charcoal. This was then put through a screen to make
it pure charcoal. This charcoal was then placed into the gas producer on the tractor
and lit with gas extracted from the charcoal to run the engine.
Farmall Tractor
Our Farmall tractor had the front 2 wheels together making it look like a 3-wheeler.
It was good for not bogging as much as the front wheels were on a different track to
the back-drive wheels.
Cockshut Tractor
One unusual tractor we had was a Cockshut. A Canadian tractor that had an unusual
gear configura on.
With the early tractors, we didn’t have the luxury of having shi on the go gears, I
would pride myself of pushing in the clutch, changing the manual I would pride
myself of pushing in the clutch, changing the manual gear to a lower or higher gear,
let the clutch out again without the wheels stopping under heavy load.
