Impor ng Frozen Sheep Embryos The ewes and rams you want to take the embryos from in South Africa have to go into quaran ne at a veterinary centre and semen be tested for all the different diseases, then retested again weeks later and, if passed, the vet can inseminate the ewes. The embryos are taken out at five and a half days old. They are just a spec and need the microscope to see if they are fer le. These are then frozen and sent to Australia where they are thawed out and inserted into the fallopian tube of our recipient ewes. Our ewes had been programmed to accept these embryos at the same stage as when they were taken out. With the imported frozen embryos, we had a 39% take rate. With this low rate, it made it very expensive. When we have programmed our best ewes to have fresh embryos taken, which can be anything from 3 to 18 embryos from one ewe, they are then inserted into other recipient ewes. The highest take rate from these fresh embryos was 95%. This is very high and an ar cle was wri en about it. To do stud breeding to the best of our ability meant we would go out each day when the ewes were lambing and catch each new lamb born, weigh them, ear tag them and register their weight and the sire and dam (ram & ewe). With this informa on, you can build the family tree and have the star ng weight to be able to work out their growth rate. This allows you to pick out the best performers to breed on with. The wool weights and micron, etc are recorded along with physical a ributes and worm egg counts. On one occasion, I was watching a par cular ewe that looked like a bale of wool walking along, so large. Next day she had triplets born. I couldn’t carry them all at once and when weighed, she had delivered 16.7 kg of lambs. A single born lamb would weigh between 3 and 6.5 kg. This was an incredible result for a natural birth. The next me these lambs were weighed combined, the triplets were 110.2 kg and the same age single born lamb was 41.8 kg. We con nued breeding stud SAMM rams un l my health deteriorated. We sold some of the stud to NSW and some to Graeme Moir at North S rling. I enjoyed the challenge of breeding and the people we met from all parts of Australia and the world. From the imported embryos, we had one ram that was very large and we were asked if he was for sale. My answer, “anything is for sale at a price”. We sold the ram for an Australian record price for a SAMM of $10,000 plus GST. 57
