Vom 18. bis 24. Juni 2018 findet in Berlin der
European Cultural Heritage Summit statt.
Unter dem Motto „Sharing Heritage – Sharing
Values“ stehen über 50 öffentliche und fachöffentliche
Veranstaltungen in und um Berlin
rund um das Thema „Kulturerbe“ auf dem
Programm. Wir haben mit den Köpfen hinter
den drei hauptverantwortlichen Organisationen
gesprochen.
The European Cultural Heritage Summit will take
place in Berlin from 18th–24th June 2018, with
‘Sharing Heritage – Sharing Values’ as its motto.
More than 50 public and professional events on
the topic of cultural heritage have been added to
the programme. We spoke to key figures from the
three organisations responsible for the Summit.

Kurz und bündig: Worum geht es beim European Cultural Heritage
Summit?
Hermann Parzinger, Präsident der Stiftung Preußischer
Kulturbesitz: Der Summit ist einer der zentralen Veranstaltungen
des Europäischen Kulturerbejahres 2018.
Ausgangspunkt für das Themenjahr ist unsere gemeinsame
kulturelle Geschichte in Europa. Wir sind davon
überzeugt, dass unser Erbe für eine europäische Identität
von enormer Bedeutung ist und uns auch in schwierigen
Zeiten beieinander stehen lässt. Wir Europäer*innen
sind eine historische Schicksals- und kulturelle Wertegemeinschaft.
Während des Summits werden wir dies ausgehend
von unserem kulturellen Erbe in verschiedensten
Veranstaltungen diskutieren.
Was soll im Ergebnis des Summits stehen?
Sneška Quaedvlieg-Mihailović, Generalsekretärin von
Europa Nostra: Wir hoffen, dass vom Summit ein ganz
starkes Signal ausgeht, nämlich: Unser gemeinsames
Kulturerbe ist Grundlage eines verbindenden und der
Vielfalt Rechnung tragenden Narrativs für Europa. Die
breite Sensibilisierung für seinen Wert und Erhalt gehört
ganz nach oben auf die politische Agenda. Dies ist
gleichzeitig eines unserer Kernanliegen für das gesamte
Europäische Kulturerbejahr.
Der Summit bietet eine große und sichtbare Plattform
für den Austausch ganz unterschiedlicher Stakeholder*innen
im Bereich des Kulturerbes. Zivilgesellschaftliche
Akteur*innen, hochrangige politische Vertreter*-innen,
Expert*innen aus den Kulturinstitutionen und
nicht zuletzt eine interessierte Öffentlichkeit werden aus
ganz Europa nach Berlin kommen, um sich auszutauschen
und eine wichtige Diskussion zu führen: Wo soll
Kulturerbe politisch künftig verortet werden? Welchen
Beitrag spielt Kulturerbe heute und zukünftig in der
Kohäsisionspolitik? Und welche finanziellen Ressourcen
werden auf europäischer, nationaler, regionaler und kommunaler
Ebene bereitgestellt, um das Potenzial, das unser
Kulturerbe für nachhaltige Entwicklung hat, zum
Wohle von Bürger*innen und Gesellschaft umfänglich
auszuschöpfen?
Der European Cultural Heritage Summit und das MakeCity
Festival sind in diesem Jahr Partner. Warum?
Uwe Koch, Leiter der Geschäftsstelle des Deutschen Nationalkomitees
für Denkmalschutz: Zunächst einmal ist
es ein wunderbares Zusammentreffen, dass das Make-
City Festival und der Summit mit einer so großen inhaltlichen
und zeitlichen Überschneidung stattfinden. Das
mussten wir nutzen! Bei MakeCity stehen Architektur
und urbane Entwicklungen und Chancen im Fokus. Auch
im Europäischen Kulturerbejahr stehen das architektonische
und städtebauliche Erbe an zentraler Stelle. Die
„Europäische Stadt“ ist in ihrer gewachsenen Struktur
und ihrem Facettenreichtum ein Kulturerbe, das weltweit
einmalig ist. Bewusstes Reagieren auf altes und
neues Kulturerbe sollte Entwicklungen im europäischen
urbanen Kontext prägen.
Welchen Stellenwert Baukultur im Europäischen Kulturerbejahr
besitzt, wird nicht zuletzt durch die im Vorfeld
des Weltwirtschaftsgipfels im Januar 2018 verabschiedete
„Erklärung von Davos“ deutlich. Unter dem
Vorsitz des Schweizer Bundespräsidenten Alain Berset
haben nahezu alle europäischen Regierungen beschlossen,
die Bedeutung hochwertiger Baukultur für Europa
zu stärken. Der Summit und das MakeCity Festival wollen
diesen Schwung gemeinsam nutzen.

In a nutshell, what is the European Cultural Heritage Summit all
about?
Hermann Parzinger, President of the Prussian Cultural
Heritage Foundation: The summit is one of the major
events within the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018.
The Year’s main point of reference has always been Europe’s
common cultural history. It is our strong belief that
our heritage is of tremendous importance to European
identity, allowing us to stand united at times of difficulty. As
Europeans, we form a community with shared values and
a common destiny throughout history. During the summit
we will discuss this at various events focused on our cultural
heritage.
It is no coincidence that the Summit will take place in
Berlin. From the very beginning, Germany has been very
committed to the European Year of Cultural Heritage.
What should be the summit’s outcome?
Sneška Quaedvlieg-Mihailović, Secretary-General of Europa
Nostra: We want the Summit to send a strong message: Our
common cultural heritage is the basis of a unifying narrative
for Europe, one which takes into account its diversity. The
conservation of heritage and increasing awareness of its value
should be at the top of the political agenda. This is our core
intention for the entire European Year of Cultural Heritage.
The Summit will provide an extensive and highly visible
platform for interaction and exchange between diverse
stakeholders in the field of cultural heritage. Civil society
organisations, high-ranking politicians, experts from cultural
institutions and, not least, members of the public, will
come to Berlin from all over Europe to debate a number of
vital issues: How should cultural heritage be politically situated
in the future? How does cultural heritage contribute
to the Cohesion Policy today and how will it do so in the
future? What resources are available at the European, national,
regional, and local level to unlock the potentials of
cultural heritage to contribute to sustainable development,
of benefit to citizens and society?
Why has the European Cultural Heritage Summit partnered up
with MakeCity Festival?
Uwe Koch, Head of the German Cultural Heritage Committee’s
office: First of all, it is a wonderful coincidence that
both the Summit and MakeCity Festival are taking place
with such a large overlap in content and time. We simply
had to make use of that! MakeCity Festival has its focus on
architecture and urban development. Architectural and urban
heritage are also at the heart of the European Year of
Cultural Heritage. The ‘European City’, with its evolved
structures and multifaceted nature, is unique. Conscious
response to both old and new heritage should characterise
urban development in Europe.
The importance of ‘Baukultur’ or ‘building culture’ for
the European Year of Cultural Heritage has been emphasised
not least by the ‘Davos Declaration’, adopted in the
run-up to the World Economic Forum in January 2018.
Chaired by the President of Switzerland, Alain Berset, the
declaration seeks to underline the importance of built cultural
heritage in Europe, and has been adopted by almost
all European governments. The European Cultural Heritage
Summit and MakeCity Festival should jointly harness this
momentum.
