A special function was held at the Garden City Helicopter Aviation Emergency AirCentre yesterday. The celebration coincided with the announcement Westpac Rescue Helicopter was the most trusted charity in the country. Canterbury crew chief Rick Knight said the recognition is appreciated. “We are often dealing in extreme circumstances, all working together to help the patient and then get them to the hospital – it is great to know people are thinking of the service.” The charity, which runs 24 hours a day, needs to raise $7 million annually to fund its service. in brief 10,000 lives saved by Westpac chopper New Brighton Pier Meghan’s Akaroa moment Teenager crawls into shower cubicle MEGHAN MARKLE has revealed all about her first honeymoon experience in Akaroa. The Duchess of Sussex told ZM Breakfast during her New Zealand holiday with former husband and film producer Trevor Engelson a teenage boy crawled into her shower cubicle and tried to steal her underwear. It will reopen to the public on Saturday. Completing the project was delayed by two months after disruption from Cyclone Gita, but the pier is now back to pre-quake strength. Sudden death not suspicious The death of a man in his 60s who was found outside social housing flats in Spreydon yesterday was not believed to be suspicious. A member of the public found his body on the lawn outside Otautahi Community Housing Trust flats on Sparks Rd at 7.30am. Police say the man died suddenly and it was not being treated as suspicious. Scammer still not identified Police are still working to identify and locate the scammer who has been threatening people with violence if they do not pay up. Nineteen complaints have been received from people targeted by the sinister scam, involving phone calls and texts to victims who are told the caller is from the Mongrel Mob, Highway 61 or Black Power. A police spokesman said inquiries were ongoing. Menacing dog plan costs council nearly $5k The city council spent $4811 on external legal advice on where dogs classed as menacing should be muzzled. It came after the city council sent letters to all menacing dog owners saying their animals had to wear muzzles when in their homes or backyards. It caused uproar so the city council then sought external advice from Buddle Findlay and made a U-turn. The city council refused to release the advice it received or any correspondence on the issue to The Star.
