Coulsdon Probus – 2nd in the world – 50th Year Anniversary 2018
Friday 11th May saw the culmination of a year’s
planning as Coulsdon Probus held its 50th Year
Anniversary Celebration Dinner at the Coulsdon Manor
Hotel. 93 guests arrived to reception drinks and a
chance to mingle and perhaps have a few words with
the Mayor of Croydon, Councillor Toni Letts OBE and
her Consort Mr Max Menon. Ceremonial chains were
everywhere – the Mayor, her Consort, the Chairman
of Coulsdon Probus and chairmen of other Probuses
there to celebrate the event: Caterham (the first
Probus in the world – Coulsdon is the second),
Sanderstead & Riddlesdown, Tandridge, Sanderstead
& Purley Oaks, Warlingham & District. Top table guests
were The Worshipful the Mayor of Croydon, Councillor
Toni Letts OBE and her Consort Mr Max Menon,
Mr Eric Jenkinson CVO, OBE (former High
Commissioner to Trinidad and Tobago) and his wife
Máire, former Councillor Chris Wright (Croydon
Councillor for Coulsdon East for 28 years) and his wife
Marlene, Mr Ian Payne, Chairman of Coulsdon Probus
and his wife Pauline. A welcome from the Chairman
was followed by a superb diner then entertainment
by professional vocalist Debbie Jay and then on to
speeches and formal toasts. After the presentation of
bouquets, all departed with a gift of an engraved pen
as a memento of the occasion.
Coulsdon Probus, the second in the world was
established in 1968, two years after the first, Caterham
Probus. Since the first two, the movement has spread
around the world with 4000 clubs and over 300,000
members. Probus Clubs are for retired PROfessional
BUSinessmen who want to network with others of
similar interests. Coulsdon Probus meets once a month
for drinks, then a good lunch and an after-lunch
speaker. We collect for the Chairman’s charity which
this year is The Retirement Centre, Old Coulsdon.
Events through the year for members and partners
include theatre trips, Thames cruises and outings to
historic sites. This year the Ladies Lunch has been
replaced by the Celebration Dinner, but Ladies are
invited to our Open Meeting this year coinciding with
our 600th meeting in August and another Celebration
Lunch in Godstone in October free to Members and
Partners. Our Celebration Year finishes with our Annual
Quiz in November.
