Coulsdon Probus – 2nd in the world – 50th Year Anniversary <strong>2018</strong><br />

Friday 11th May saw the culmination of a year’s<br />

planning as Coulsdon Probus held its 50th Year<br />

Anniversary Celebration Dinner at the Coulsdon Manor<br />

Hotel. 93 guests arrived to reception drinks and a<br />

chance to mingle and perhaps have a few words with<br />

the Mayor of Croydon, Councillor Toni Letts OBE and<br />

her Consort Mr Max Menon. Ceremonial chains were<br />

everywhere – the Mayor, her Consort, the Chairman<br />

of Coulsdon Probus and chairmen of other Probuses<br />

there to celebrate the event: Caterham (the first<br />

Probus in the world – Coulsdon is the second),<br />

Sanderstead & Riddlesdown, Tandridge, Sanderstead<br />

& Purley Oaks, Warlingham & District. Top table guests<br />

were The Worshipful the Mayor of Croydon, Councillor<br />

Toni Letts OBE and her Consort Mr Max Menon,<br />

Mr Eric Jenkinson CVO, OBE (former High<br />

Commissioner to Trinidad and Tobago) and his wife<br />

Máire, former Councillor Chris Wright (Croydon<br />

Councillor for Coulsdon East for 28 years) and his wife<br />

Marlene, Mr Ian Payne, Chairman of Coulsdon Probus<br />

and his wife Pauline. A welcome from the Chairman<br />

was followed by a superb diner then entertainment<br />

by professional vocalist Debbie Jay and then on to<br />

speeches and formal toasts. After the presentation of<br />

bouquets, all departed with a gift of an engraved pen<br />

as a memento of the occasion.<br />

Coulsdon Probus, the second in the world was<br />

established in 1968, two years after the first, Caterham<br />

Probus. Since the first two, the movement has spread<br />

around the world with 4000 clubs and over 300,000<br />

members. Probus Clubs are for retired PROfessional<br />

BUSinessmen who want to network with others of<br />

similar interests. Coulsdon Probus meets once a month<br />

for drinks, then a good lunch and an after-lunch<br />

speaker. We collect for the Chairman’s charity which<br />

this year is The Retirement Centre, Old Coulsdon.<br />

Events through the year for members and partners<br />

include theatre trips, Thames cruises and outings to<br />

historic sites. This year the Ladies Lunch has been<br />

replaced by the Celebration Dinner, but Ladies are<br />

invited to our Open Meeting this year coinciding with<br />

our 600th meeting in August and another Celebration<br />

Lunch in Godstone in October free to Members and<br />

Partners. Our Celebration Year finishes with our Annual<br />

Quiz in November.<br />
