Joan says "I’ve set myself a
challenge to photograph birds in
flight, so a local wildlife exhibition
provided a great opportunity to
develop my skills.
Although the kestrel was one of
the smaller birds at the exhibition,
I loved the colour of his feathers. It
took a fair bit of patience and quite
a few shots to capture him at just
the right moment."
Bird’s Eye View
By John Birkett, RSPB Croydon Local Group
I have just completed a day birdwatching at
many sites in Croydon and it is time to take
stock of changes in Croydon’s bird life over
recent years. Some species now have just a
tenuous claw hold with only a couple of Yellowhammers
left at Riddlesdown and a single pair
of Reed Buntings at South Norwood CP. And
it is becoming harder to find House Martins
and Swifts around our houses. On the plus side
Little Egrets are becoming more common and
Egyptian Geese are now breeding. Buzzards
and Red Kites are likely to colonise soon.
But, before anyone links their increase to
declines in small birds, it should be
remembered that these neither of these
species usually prey on song birds. In fact
some small birds are increasing; Goldfinches
are far more common than they were 20 years
ago and Whitethroats are thriving at South
Norwood CP.
You can help us to monitor Croydon’s birds by
taking part in our bird survey, recording the
birds in and around your garden each month,
or you can send us details of anything
interesting that you see. If you find any House
Martins nesting in eaves (or anywhere else) we
would love to hear about them. Likewise if you
see and hear Swifts screaming around the
rooftops or diving behind the gutters (this
would suggest they have a nest in the roof).
You can find out more about the RSPB Croydon
Local Group and the survey by coming along to
one of our meetings or going to the website:
