Thomas Carroll Elementary School
perseveres through difficult times
B L R
The fifth grade students of
the Thomas Carroll Elementary
School are encouraged to
share their stories of pain and
struggle this year through the
G eorge K yminas Strength and
Perseverance Award on June
19 at 1:30 p.m. The award is in
the memory of Peabody native,
and Carroll Elementary School
attendee G eorge K yminas, who
died of a congenital heart condition
called Shone’s Syndrome
in 2014 a t age 27.
His sister Jennifer K yminas
has been instrumental with organiz
ing the event, along with
friend W endy L eigh.
According to http://www.
childrensheartclinic.org
Shone’s syndrome ( also know n
as Shone’s complex) is a rare
combination of four left-sided
congenital cardiac anomalies
including parachute mitral
valve, supravalvar ring, coarctation
( narrowing) of the aorta,
and subaortic obstruction. The
mitral valve leaflets are abnormal,
often thicke ned or immobile
with fused commissures
and thick, shortened cords,
giving the valve a “ parachute”
shape.
K yminas was also diagnosed
with endocarditis at age 12
which is an infection of the endocardium,
which is the inner
lining of the heart chambers and
heart valves, according to www.
mayoclinic.org.
“ That’s when things took a
craz y turn,” K yminas said. “ He
got a pacemake r, he had a 20
percent chance of living.”
K yminas survived the neardeath
encounter. He later met
his wife Dana K yminas who
was his high school sweetheart.
“ M y brother met his wife and
she became pregnant when he
got sick again in 2014 and that’s
when he passed away,” said she
said.
Dana K yminas was pregnant
with their daughter L ayla when
he passed away that year.
and Perseve rance Award.
“ The Strength and
Perseverance Award was started
by one of the committee members
at the school who kne w my
brother and her family,” said
K yminas. “ Her name is W endy
inton. She got me and a really
good friend of mine W endy
L eigh on board and that’s how
this whole thing started.”
The event encourages fifth
grade students to write about
their expe riences with personal
struggles. K yminas visits the
school once a year and tell the
story of her brother, and his
expe rience with being so sick
from a young age.
K yminas, and L eigh ask the
ki ds what difficulties they have
witnessed and how it impacted
their lives. K yminas, L eigh and
Dana K yminas read the stories
and pick t hree winners.
“ I t gets very sad with some of
these stories,” said K yminas.
“ All of my brother’s friends
collect money - $3 00 - every
single year,” she said. “ They all
get $100 to spend at B arnes &
Noble and the first-place winner
gets their name on a plaque .”
The entire fifth grade class
will be meeting in an assembly
with all of the teachers being involved
in the program. The stories
are read aloud by the three
winning students. The event is
open to anyone who would like
to attend.
K yminas was loved in the
community and by his teachers
at the Carroll Elementary
School.
“ That’s why we do what we
do at the Carroll Elementary
School because of his ties to
the community and how well
know n he was,” she said.
“ He was always in such good
spirits.”
Dana and daughter L ayla
K yminas, 3, attend the event
every year.
“ He was a fighter who never
gave up,” said K yminas.
K yminas’ life and legacy lives
on at the Carroll Elementary
School, and his story encourages
students to be open
and share their own personal
struggles.
the beauty of landscapes.
“ The whole purpose for me is
to capture the beauty of nature,”
he said. “ The beauty inspires
me and I feel at peace when I ’m
close to any national park, any
place that does not have much
interference with people. I love
everything nature has to offer.”
“ M y love for the night
sk y is why I ventured into
night sk y photography,” said
amtani.
That love for the night
sk y won him the “ Share the
Ex perience” award with the
breathtak ing view of the
rock y shoreline, and blindingly
beautiful starlit night.
amtani finds the work to be
meditative and relax ing, a far
cry from the hustle-bustle life
of living in the city.
Acadia National park is one
of M amtani’s favorite spots,
and he says it has something
for everyone. Camping, hiki ng,
lake side and seaside days and
more are at his fingertips when
he visits.
“ I ’ve been entering in the
‘ Share the Ex perience’ contest
for the past five or six
years,” M amtani said. “ I
have won honorable mentions
twice but this was huge to win
a grand priz e and to have my
photo printed on the ‘ America
the B eautiful National Park ’
is just an amaz ing. Almost
half a million people buy
those paces and to have my
photo on there is such a great
feeling.”
amtani planned out the location
Clear ski es were a must,
as well as the moon light not
“ Fortunately the weather cooperates
and I got a clear night
Acadia National Park along
with Cape Cod National
Seashore are some of his favorite
spots for vacation, but of
course M amtani is never going
to rest because he is searching
for the perfect shot.
Along with landscapes
amtani occasionally does portraits,
The money will help pay for
work to address site contamination
from historic use as a tannery
district and create a park resource
than enhances public access and
vitality of the area. Specific task s
include a resiliency evaluation to
determine how best to accommodate
flood waters along the bank s
of the canal, a preliminary redesign
of the wall on the south bank , portions
of which are crumbling into
the canal; a preliminary design of
a Riverwalk along the south bank ;
and development of a permitting
strategy to support the project.
The total project costs is
$298,000 with the city expe cted
to contribute $74,000.
State programs help cities and
towns develop climate change
resiliency plans. Through
grants administered by the state,
municipalities will receive technical
assistance to conduct vulnerability
assessments and develop
action plans.
Using a Community Resilience
public and private sector
representatives collaborate to develop
a prioritiz ed list of actions
to improve resilience to natural
PULMONARY CARE PROGRAM AT PILGRIM
Designed specifically for those needing
management of chronic respiratory
conditions, our Pulmonary Care
Program helps patients return home as
quickly and effectively as possible.
GUT CHECK
Research into the complex relationship between gut bacteria and
the human body reveals that disturbances in microbial composition
can lead to a large number of diseases. With this in mind, we have all
the more reason to limit our unnecessary intake of antibiotics, which
dramatically disrupt microbial balance in the human gut. Moreover, a
recent study suggests that a number of non-antibiotic medications
have also been associated with changes in gut microbe composition.
When researchers compiled a panel of 40 species of human-gut
bacteria and used it to screen more than 1,000 drugs, they found that,
of the 923 non-antibiotic drugs analyzed, 250 were found to have
disrupted the growth of at least one of the 40 species of gut bacteria
in the panel.
Only bacterial infections can be killed with antibiotics. The common
cold, flu, most coughs and sore throats, and the stomach flu are all
caused by viruses. Antibiotics won’t work to treat them. Your doctor
will tell you either to wait these illnesses out or prescribe antiviral
drugs to help you get rid of them. For more information, please call or
B y R osalie Harrington
I love picnics and the season
for them is upon us. W hether
you choose the beach, a park
or your own back yard or porch
for your picnic, spread out one
of your old q uilts or tablecloths,
gather a few friends and family
and celebrate the heat with a delightful
meal.
ith all essential items in
place, I only need to decide what
to cook when inspiration strik es.
I have enough tableware leftover
from my restaurant days
so I don’t need plastic fork s and
utensils. Other items include
plastic glasses, paper towels, a
serrated k nife, a cutting board
and small k nife and of course
a bottle opener, along with a
bunch of non-matching little
cloth napk ins, which I prefer
to paper. I nsect repellent, sunscreen,
citronella candles, trash
bags are in their own bask et.
hen inspired by warm days
or special people mood, a picnic
can q uick ly be made ready to go.
There are a few food rules for
picnic safety: K eep food chilling
in the fridge for as long as
possible, then pack it in a cooler
surrounded by ice pack s. B e
very careful with meat, seafood
and eggs. Pack raw meat and
marinade in drip proof containers
at the bottom of your cooler.
Don’t leave food out longer than
one hour.
y favorite picnic foods include
deviled eggs with green
tomato jam mix ed with the
yolk s, and cold soups lik e potato
leek , gaz pacho, watercress, spinach
and pea.
M eat such as pulled pork ,
meatballs, sausage with broccoli
rabbi, chick en salad and
meat loaf all work well on
herbed focaccia, which mak es
an easy to handle sandwich in
natural environments because
it is softer than a baguette.
The spinach pie that I served
at Rosalie’s mak es a delicious
picnic with a tomato, moz z a-
rella and basil salad or - a family
favorite in recent years - a
salad of watermelon, mint and
feta is wonderfully refreshing
in warm weather. B ring a simple
dressing of oil and lemon
pack ed in jar and finish your
salad to order.
hite wine sangria provides
great refreshment on a picnic.
Put cut up peaches, orange slices,
1/4 cup sugar, half a bottle of
white wine and 2 cups of soda
water or ginger ale, and a sprink
le of cinnamon in a jar. At serving
time, pour over ice and add a
little fresh fruit and mint.
On May 26, volunteers from St. Maria
Goretti and Our Lady of the Assumption parishes
in Lynnfield spent their Saturday afternoon
playing board and card games with residents
of the Brudnick Center for Living in
Peabody. In the blink of an eye, strangers became
friends, age differences melted away,
and smiles filled the room. And we learned one
important lesson... you don’t grow out of a love
of cupcakes!
Kate McGrath, Lynnfield Catholic Collaborative’s
Pastoral Assistant, organized this outreach
that brought young and young-at-heart
together, and emphasized the principle of respecting
life at all its stages. As Kate put it,
“Holistic health is not just about caring for
ourselves personally; it is also about caring for
each other as a community - a body of people.
And so this type of activity is an expression of
our faith and commitment to caring for one
another: body, mind, and spirit.”
Wakefield Lynnfield United Methodist
C hurch
273 Vernon St., Wakefield with Pastor:
Glenn M. Mortimer
Hello from the Wakefield-Lynnfield United
Methodist Church!
Here is a little bit about our welcoming
Methodist Church Community. Each Sunday,
Worship Service starts at 10:30 a.m. during
which we offer Sunday School for infants/
toddlers through high Schoolers. Following
the service, we enjoy Fellowship at our Coffee
& Conversation time.
There are also many ways to serve the community
here through volunteer opportunities,
social groups and committees like Ecumenical
Youth Group, Choir, Book Club, Sunday
School, Bible Study, United Methodist Women,
Ministry Leadership Team, Card Care Club,
Craft Fair Committee, just to name a few. We
offer our building to many local groups like
Happy Hearts Preschool, Cub Scouts, Girl
Scouts, Wakefield Arts & Crafts Society, Music
Together-Preschool Music, Kids Curtain Call
Drama for Middle Schoolers, Wakefield Toy
Swap, just to name a few! We are also a Project
Linus Blanket Drop-off spot!
We even have musicians “In the House” as
our Pastor, Rev. Glenn Mortimer, and his wife
Elizabeth are trained musicians which they
incorporate into special church services for all
to enjoy! For more information about our
church, please call the church office at (781)
245-1359 or email us at our new email
WLUMC273@gmail.com. Visit us on Facebook
www.facebook.com/methodistchurchwakefield.
We look forward to welcoming you on Sunday!
On Mondays, at 6 p.m., St. Paul’s parishioners
and friends gather for Centering Prayer.
Introduction to Centering Prayer is offered the
first Monday of the month, May 7, at 5:30 p.m.
Also on Mondays, May 7 & 21, the Knitting
Group meets at 7pm. Experts and beginners
are welcome.
Holy Eucharist and Bible Study are offered
Wednesday mornings, beginning at 9am.
Open Choir Rehearsal begins at 7pm on
Thursdays. Please join us if you enjoy singing.
The 2018 Peabody Veterans
emorial High School graduates
are resilient. A little rain
and mugginess wasn’t going to
stop them from celebrating their
successes during Friday’s commencement
ceremony.
The stands at Coley L ee Field
were packe d with cheering
family members waiting to
catch a glimpse of the more
than 360 graduates walki ng
across the stage to collect their
diplomas.
Senior class co-presidents
Tabbitha B ono and Ann M anning
delivered the welcoming address
through a brief driz z le.
ayor Edward A. B ettencourt
Jr. encouraged the graduates to
follow in the footsteps of other
Peabody graduates who went
on to be entertainers, scientists
and doctors.
“ I want to ask every graduate
where you want to go,” he said.
The answer is unique to each
graduate, as is their journey
once they leave, he said.
Herb L evine was emotional
as he delivered his final graduation
address as Peabody superintendent.
He aske d the young
women of the class to stand up,
telling them they are the future
of the professional world.
“ I am confident that you
ladies will be tak ing over
the insurance companies, the
pharmaceutical companies,
the bank s and all the other
places that have so disappointed
us over the past 2 0,
3 0, 40 years mak e them a
better place, do better than we
have,” said L evine, adding, “ I
strongly urge you to stay in
control even when things get
difficult.”
The iffy weather didn’t
dampen student spirits. The
graduates could be seen
laughing and smiling as beach
balls were thrown in the air
throughout the ceremony.
Senior Essayist Sarah
Abdulghani spoke about her
family’s journey to the U.S.,
and of the difficulties they have
faced living in a new country.
“ Not everyone welcomes
us with open arms, but that’s
just another harsh reality and
something you fellow graduates
can change of the future,” said
Abdulghani.
Valedictorian Ryan Cormier
brought a dose of humor to cap
off the speeches before graduates
received their diplomas.
“ One of my fellow classmates
was dumbfounded that I
do more than schoolwork when
class ends for the day. ‘ W ait,
so you don’t lock yourself in
a room and study all day,’ he
aske d me,” said Cormier.
Congratulations to
the class of 2018
Student speeches
B S A
C E
Administrators, teachers,
family, friends, and class of
2018:
There is a lot I wanted to say
to you all today; I didn’t want to
be cliché , and I didn’t want to
speak for hours up here, so I ’ve
managed to condense everything
into one message that I hope resonates
with most of you.
The four years we spent together
as a class were interesting,
to say the least. W e’ve
seen seen glimpses of both the
very best in the world and also
the very worst. W e’ve made it
this far, and I congratulate each
of you, but we still have a long
way to go from here. W e have a
lot to get done.
I f I ’ve learned anything in
high school, it’s that we are not
all given the life we want, or
even the life we might deserve.
Some of us have been treated
unfairly, some of us have been
treated too fairly, and some of
us seem to be sitting on the
Class Essayist: Don’t sit on
the sidelines, choose to act
sidelines watching the way everybody
else is being treated.
B ut if there is also something
else I ’ve learned, it’s that everything
that happens, everything,
is susceptible to our actions,
whether good or bad. I t
is possible to change the course
of events, and it is possible to
do something, even when you
think you c an’t.
And if you don’t believe me,
look at the walk out that was organiz
ed by a small group of people
here, most notably my good
friend K irsten Crowe, who I feel
lik e deserves some appreciation
for everything she did.
I t’s possible to do anything,
as cliché as it may sound, and
I hope that this fact will drive
all of you to do some of the
greatest things ever seen in the
years ahead of us.
e’re all standing in this
room today with roads ahead of
us, but the harsh reality is that
some of us may have the roads
already paved for us, and some
of us have to find our ways
PHOTOS | SPENSER HASAK
PVMHS Class Essayist Sarah Abdulghani addresses her class
during graduation.
through the land. Either way,
we will make it. W e’re sitting
in a room filled with future doctors,
teachers, lawyers, nurses,
and maybe even a president. I
believe all of us will tackl e the
injustices and endeavors presented
before us with courage.
To wrap it all up, I wanted to
say thank you. Thank you to each
and every single person who in
any way over the last four years,
made the day a bit more bearable,
taught me something, or
helped me up when I was down.
You k now ex actly who you are
and I genuinely thank you. M y
incredible teachers, my k ind
hearted friends, everyone.
And of course, to my parents.
None of this would have
been q uite possible without you
two. For those of you who don’t
k now, my parents and I immigrated
to this country when I was
very young, and I can’t begin to
imagine what that must’ve felt
lik e. Truthfully, I can’t imagine
what it must have been lik e, especially
since in this country,
people lik e us are not always
welcomed with open arms by
all. That’s another harsh reality
that we have to face.
B ut again, fellow graduates, that
is just something else that you can
set out to change. I k now I will.
Again, thank you all and congratulations.
I wish you all the
very best in the years to come.
Please, when you are presented
with the choice to do something,
or to do nothing, please, please,
always choose to do something.
Congratulations and the best of
luck to the Class of 2018!
WEEKLYNEWS.NET - 978-532-5880 JUNE 7, 2018
Salutatorian: Hasta la vista, baby!
B S B
S
Hello friends, family,
teachers, administration, city
representatives, and everyone
else here today. Class of 2018,
we did it! W e have finally
reached the end of our four year
journey. I would like to begin
by thanki ng everyone who has
made today possible, such as
all of our passionate teachers
and faculty, Principal B uckl ey
( hi Dad), assistant principal
aniatis, Superintendent Dr.
L evine, assistant superintendent
M s. M urtagh, M ayor
B ettencourt, city officials, and
everyone else behind the scenes
who help us as students achieve
success.
I ’d like to begin by saying
without a doubt that, although
I am the salutatorian, I don’t
believe that I am by any means
the second smartest person here
wearing a graduation cap. Our
intelligence as a class can not be
confined to just our G PAs, and
you guys have truly exe mplified
that and humbled me with
your brilliance and capacity
beyond the text book . I have no
doubt that everyone here can
and will have bright futures…
maybe almost as bright as M r.
B uckl ey’s bald head on a sunny
day. I have learned something
new from my peers every day
at Peabody High and it is a
profound honor to be standing
here addressing you all on this
beautiful day. I congratulate everyone
who is graduating today,
and encourage you all to thank
those who got you here. G ive
your friends a hug, tell your parents
you love them, thank your
teachers, and always remember
your roots while looki ng back
with gratitude.
Coming into high school as
a freshman was a major adjustment.
W e entered the walls of
this big brown box and found
ourselves swallowed in a sea of
new things: new sports teams,
people, teachers, strange odors
in the halls, classes, new everything.
I t was all foreign to us
and we had to find a way to adjust
to this new expe rience.
I n the near future we will
all get that strange feeling of
uncertainty and unfamiliarity
again. There are certainly
challenges that come with
new beginnings. Some are
small obstacles, lik e finding
an unlock ed bathroom in this
school ( I am still yet to crack
the code) but I am sure that
when we all go to college,
join the military, the work -
force, or wherever our futures
bring us, it will not be easy.
B ut that’s ok ay, as change is
not supposed to be easy! I t
is scary and overwhelming.
e’re moving into the future,
into the unk nown, and that
is undoubtedly intimidating.
B ut high school has taught
me above all else that if you
simply surround yourself with
good people, every obstacle
will seem more surmountable.
I have found my best
friends here in high school,
and shoutout to everyone
here who has made a positive
impact in my life and offered
me nothing but support when
I needed it most ( you k now
who you are). I appreciate
you all, which brings me to
my favorite motto- Q uality
over q uantity. High school
has been a time of change and
growth and we’ve all grown
into our own sk in. W e have
made friends as well as lost
friends, and there is no sugarcoating
that losing a friend
is hard. I have learned, however,
that it will mak e you a
much happier person upon the
realiz ation that the q uality of
your friendships is far more
important than the q uantity of
friends you have. L et’s outgrow
the stigma saying that
popularity is measured by
how many friends we have,
and focus on the q uality of
each relationship we form. I n
the words of G eorge Carlin,
“ we have multiplied our
PHOTO | SPENSER HASAK
PVMHS Salutatorian Sarah Buckley encouraged her class to embrace every moment.
possessions but reduced our
values.” L et’s concern ourselves
less with the days in
our lives and more with the
amount of life in our days.
e live in a world where technology
is the primary way of
communicating and we heavily
rely on it. W hile there are many
positives to the technological
advances we are encountering,
simple face to face contact has
become less common. iphones
and tablets have undoubtedly
altered the way we socializ e...
e text people who are sitting
across the room from us, judge
popularity on how many instagram
like s we get, and we often
lose sight of what is happening
right before our eyes. I have
one piece of parting advice for
everyone sitting here today; do
not live your life through a lens
or behind a screen! I nstead of
trying to capture moments in
a ten second snapchat video,
let’s capture them forever in our
minds. G o outside and breathe
the fresh air and don’t ever miss
out on a sunny day because
you are too busy sitting inside
scrolling through social media
or ignoring your girlfriend
while playing video games ( we
know you’re all playing together
and getting fortnite dubs,
not actually “ studying”).
Think about how all the time
we spend on a screen accumulates,
and how we can direct
this time towards more useful
things, whether it is accomplishing
a goal, simply spending
more qua lity time with those we
love, etc.
Now, I am not by any means
telling everyone that you’re
awful people who should
leave here, delete all social
media and throw your phones
out the window on route 12 8,
I am just encouraging everyone
to be mindful of how
much time we waste glued to
our devices. Trust me, I am
admittedly guilty of this as
well. I urge everyone to talk
to each other and be social in
real life! I challenge this graduating
class ( myself included)
to focus less on things lik e
how many social media followers
we have, and more on
becoming strong leaders who
mak e our mark s for generations
to follow! W e are only
living this ex act moment once,
so let’s embrace every second
we have together with those
we love and focus on what we
are luck y to have, not what we
wish we did. B ecause at the
end of the day, gratitude turns
what we have into enough.
I wish everyone happiness
and health as we turn the
page to begin the nex t chapter
of our lives. Thank you all
for a memorable four years,
and in the words of Arnold
Schwarz enegger, “ hasta la
vista baby.”
We are very proud of you and
wish you well with future pursuits
Valedictorian: Let’s give everyone a chance
B R C
V
I too would lik e to greet all the
members of the audience. L et
me begin with a collective thank
you to every mother, father,
step parent, aunt, uncle, sibling,
grandparent, and neighbor. To
every teacher, substitute, para-professional,
guidance counselor,
and administrator, we
recogniz e, appreciate, and honor
the roles you’ve played in all our
lives, whether big or small.
hile I am proud to be valedictorian,
I have found it particularly
puz z ling that I ’ve been
subject to numerous ridiculous,
and often humorous, rumors.
Perhaps it’s because I ’m somewhat
qu iet in class and neglect
to show my true self as much
as some of you do. I n Spanish
class last year, my favorite misconception
was revealed to me.
One of my fellow classmates
was dumbfounded when he
learned that I do more than just
schoolwork when class ends for
the day. “ W ait! So you don’t
lock yourself in your room and
study all night? ” he aske d me. I
didn’t know whether to believe
him or laugh hysterically, but
regardless, I can assure you all
the bit about me studying 24/ 7
is just a rumor.
The nex t misconception is the
idea that I only have book smarts
and completely lack common
sense... ok ay . . . that one may be
somewhat true, according to my
mom... moving on!
y que stion to all of you is
why do these rumors form?
How can such outlandish, and
often untrue, stories form so
qui ckl y and spread lik e wildfire?
I t’s because we all judge
others much too q uickl y. W e
observe from a distance the way
people dress, the way they wear
their hair, the way they speak,
the company they ke ep. W e
judge people without getting
to know them first. W e make
assumptions, share our assumptions,
and allow others to contribute
their own assumptions.
Christine Bucci Carpenter ,
Realtor ® 617-538-9396
PVMHS Valedictorian Ryan Cormier hopes his classmates will remain open-minded.
Now, let’s go back in time for a
moment. On this very land, over
3 2 0 years ago, 2 0 people died.
This particular group of people
did not die of old age or medical
conditions, but because of incorrect
assumptions. The Salem
itch Trials were not only fueled
by fear, but also by greed,
jealousy, and misunderstanding
of the unk nown. G uilty until
proven innocent, some accused
were sentenced to death because
of the way they acted, the way
they spok e, what they believed
in, and what they owned. I t just
goes to show how simple and
seemingly harmless misconceptions
can result in tragedy.
I would be lying to all of you
if I said that I haven’t judged
someone on face value. I n fact,
a particular friend of mine who
I ’ve become ext remely close
with over the course of high
school ( he know s who he is)
wasn’t much of a friend when
I began my PVM HS career.
e weren’t friendly in middle
school; therefore, I didn’t know
him personally. I n fact, I viewed
him as annoying because of his
actions, his comments, and previous
assumptions about him. I
remember freshman year, I was
ext remely displeased when he
sat next to me on the bus for a
school trip; I wanted no part of
him. L ittle did I know that he
was a complex individual and
that we had much in common.
Fast forward almost four years
later; he is one of the few people
I can talk to earnestly because
he is a true friend; a friend that
I wouldn’t have right now if I
neglected to reserve my judgments
years ago.
F. Scott Fitz gerald, in his
novel The G reat G atsby, wrote
that “ Reserving judgements is a
matter of infinite hope.” M y interpretation
of his words is that
the longer you resist judging or
labeling someone, the lik elier
you are to find the positive in a
Northrup Associates
The Home Team
Congratulations 2018 Graduates!
Proud to be a Lynnfield High Alumni
person and associate yourself
with them. Association leads to
understanding, connection, and
eventually friendship. I f we all
learn to reserve our judgments,
we will have the potential to
open doors that lead down roads
previously unimaginable. That
person you viewed as weird,
nerdy, or q uiet, may just become
your best friend or your connection
to your dream job; they may
even save your life one day.
I don’t feel guilty for misjudging
my friend; rather, I
believe it is human nature to
make immediate judgments that
reflect our first impressions.
However, the earlier we learn
to reserve our judgments, the
brighter our futures may be,
futures that flourish with connections
and friendships. Take
me, for instance one last time;
although I may study a bit more
than the next guy and prefer to
listen rather than openly participate
in class, I am equa lly com-
PHOTO | SPENSER HASAK
plex as all of you. And whether
I ’m playing Super Smash B ros.
on game nights, going head to
head with my buddies in a game
of floor hocke y, playing soccer
with my team, performing with
the band, or hitting the books ,
I really am just like all of you.
So, Class of 2 018, I ask that
you hold on to my advice and incorporate
it into your own lives.
As someone who has judged and
been judged, I assure you that our
lives will be undeniably better if
we remain open minded, optimistic,
and infinitely hopeful for
the best possible outcome. Simply
put, let’s give everyone a chance.
Now, allow me, your local
street smart-deficient and academic
hermit, to transition all
of us to the nex t chapter of our
lives. Farewell everyone, and
once again; thank you to everyone
in the audience. W e could
have never reached this great
accomplishment without you.
Congratulations Class of 2 018.
Tom and Sharon Gould
wish all the 2018 Graduates
the best and brightest future!

WEEKLYNEWS.NET - 978-532-5880 9
Tournament time in Tanner town
B y Anne Marie T obin
PEAB ODY — The Peabody
baseball team begins its q uest for
a state Division 1 championship
Thursday afternoon at home.
The Tanners, who finished the
season 11-7 to earn the No. 7 seed
in the North tournament will tak e
on M errimack Valley Conference
rival L awrence, the No. 10 seed
( 10-10), this afternoon at 4 at
B ez emes Diamond.
The Tanners are hoping to improve
on the last two seasons
when they failed to mak e it out the
first round.
“ That’s the plan as we have
not had much success of late, but
tak ing on a big M errimack Valley
team will be a challenge,” said
Peabody coach M ark B ettencourt.
“ W e will see, but it comes down
to, lik e anything else, we have to
find a way to score runs and throw
strik es. All I k now is they have
at least one very good pitcher, so
we have to find a way to hit. Jak e
G ustin, our NEC M VP, will be
k ey there. As he goes, so goes
Peabody.”
B ettencourt said he has not decided
on a starter.
“ Having not seen their offense
yet, it will all depend on what we
see after doing some homework ,”
he said. “ W e have Alex D’Angelo,
who throws three pitches and can
spot the ball; and Joe G ilmartin,
who throws a little harder but
has a sharp break ing ball. W e
also have Eddie Campbell, who
has had some q uality outings and
can throw a good curveball, so it
will all depend on which of them
matches up best to L awrence’s
offense.”
SO F T B AL L
The softball team finished
the regular season 17 -3 to earn
the No. 5 seed in the Division 1
North tournament. The Tanners
received a bye in the preliminary
round and will play the winner of
the No. 2 1 B oston L atin vs. No.
12 L incoln-Sudbury game scheduled
to be played this afternoon at
L incoln-Sudbury.
Second- singles player Shaelyn K
shot earlier this season.
“ I k now absolutely nothing
about either team ex cept that they
are both pretty good, tough Dual
County L eague teams,” Peabody
coach B utch M elanaphy said. “ I
do k now that the girls are all fired
up and I have never seen a team so
serious about winning. Even with
nine seniors, they are all still mentally
focused, they are in it to win.”
The Tanners got off their best
start in program history, winning
their first 13 games before stalling
out with losses in three of the nex t
four games. They righted the ship
with a 12 -3 win over neighboring
B ishop Fenwick in the consolation
round of the Corning M emorial
Tournament, then closed out the
regular season with a huge win,
defeating visiting M arblehead,
5 -1 to secure a share of the NEC
large title.
M elanaphy said that the momentum
from that win has carried
over into the postseason.
“ The energy we had from the
M arblehead game has definitely
made a difference,” he said. “ I t
Sports
FILE PHOTO
elley f ollows through on a
started with the Fenwick win at
the Corning, and then I think that
home run by Tianna ( Dawe) in the
M arblehead game just propelled
the feeling forward. The girls
were so up for that game, and so
was M arblehead, but I think that
that home run took the steam out
of them, for sure.”
T E N N I S
The boys and girls tennis teams
are both mak ing their first tournament
appearances since 2 014.
The boys finished 7 -6 and earned
the No. 9 seed in the 10-team
brack et in the North Division 1
tournament, while the girls finished
11-4 and earned the No. 6
seed in the 10-team brack et in the
North Division 1 tournament.
B oth teams were scheduled to
start play M onday, but the matches
were postponed due to rain.
The boys took on No. 8 Newton
South ( 8-6) on the road yesterday
( W ednesday) while the girls were
scheduled to open Tuesday at
home against No. 3 seed B oston
READI NG -- W hile the talent
was there, it was expe rience
that was lacki ng for the Tanners
at Reading M emorial High, as
No. 11 Peabody girls lacrosse
team fell to the No. 6 Rocke ts,
15- 8 in the opening round of the
Division 1 North tournament.
WEEKLYNEWS.NET - 978-532-5880 JUNE 7, 2018
Fenwick tennis bounced by Lynnfield
B y Anne Marie T obin
L YNNFI EL D — W hen it
comes to postseason tournaments,
every high school coach
know s it never hurts to have a
little bit of luck in the seeding
process. Just ask B ishop
Fenwick girls tennis coach
Paula Hannon.
The L ynnfield Pioneers
girls tennis team have owned
the North tournament for the
past four years, winning four
straight titles and also a state
championship ( 2014 ) after
earning the top seed.
This year, however, the
Pioneers were forced to do
something they had not done
during that stretch, and that was
to play a first-round match.
Unfortunately for Hannon’s
Crusaders, that match was
against the No. 11 seeded
Fenwick, thanks to a coin flip
that relegated the Pioneers to
the No. 6 seed.
For a second straight season,
the Pioneers prevailed, winning
4-1 on a sunny Saturday afternoon
at the middle school to
advance to W ednesday’s qua r-
terfinals against Swampscott.
For Fenwick, it’s back to the
drawing board after graduating
three senior starters in K erry
K ircher, Abby G raumann and
Taylor B otthoff, who missed
most of the year playing second
singles with an injury.
“ I t will be a rebuilding as we
are losing five seniors in all, but
we have a good year with some
qua lity wins, both individually
and as a team,” said Fenwick
coach Paula Hannon. “ K erry
played a great match today to
get a point for us and do something
we have never done in
program history, and that was
to never get shut out 5- 0 in a
single match. W e had very
good chemistry this year, and I
am confident it will carry over
into next year.”
B oth teams were well know n
to each, having played five
matches over the past two years,
all won by L ynnfield.
L ast year, the Crusaders finally
broke a 6-year winless
streak in the tournament with
a win in the first round. Their
Girls lacrosse team gets eliminated
Too many free position shots
proved costly to the Tanners.
“ This is what happens to young
teams, and that’s what I told
them, said Peabody coach Dennis
Desroches. “ W e’re up one minute,
down the nex t. B ut I ’m very proud
of the girls, they didn’t q uit and
they fought to the end.”
reward was a date with the
Pioneers, who cruised to a 4-1
qua rterfinal win.
This year, L ynnfield took
every match in straight sets ex -
cept the first singles match after
freshman M egan Nevils retired
with an injured wrist after
losing the first set to Fenwick
senior captain and Catholic
Conference L eague M VP K erry
Tanners with three goals, while
Colleen Crotty had two goals
and one assist. Hailie L omasney
added one goal and three assists,
Sarah B uckl ey had one goal and
one assist and Olivia K iricoples
scored one goal. G oalie Olivia
L avalle had 15 saves in the loss.
“ Olivia was outstanding in
net,” Desroches said. “ This one
could have gotten out of hand
pretty qui ckl y if she hadn’t been
so good.”
The Tanners drew first blood
less than four minutes into the
game when Sarah B uck ley drove
hard to the net and scored to tak e
a 1-0 lead. B ut it was all Rock ets
the rest of the half, who took a
6-3 lead into halftime break , then
coasted home in the second half.
Turnovers were also costly
as Peabody turned the ball over
more than 10 times.
“ You just can’t let the other
team play offense the whole
game and be back on your
K ircher, 7- 5.
Sophomores Celeste Joly and
Claire Yang stake d L ynnfield to
a 1-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-2 win at
second doubles over sophomore
aria O’Donnell and junior
Sarah B lessington.
Five minutes later, L ynnfield
senior exc hange student B ela
Ferreira made it 2- 0 with a win
at love with a win over sophomore
Anna Young in the third
singles match, 6-0, 6-0.
After K ircher got the
Crusaders on the board with
her win, L ynnfield junior captain
Alexa Vittiglio clinched the
match with a 6-3, 6-4 win over
sophomore B renna W aldinger
at second singles.
CAL all-stars G illian Sk elley,
a sophomore, and freshman
Emma G allucci capped the
scoring with a 6-3 , 6-2 win at
first doubles over G raumann
and junior Niamh W alsh.
heels,” Desroches said. “ B ut
unfortunately, the turnovers
hurt us bad. W e just couldn’t
complete the passes or come up
with the ground balls when we
needed them.”
hile it’s obviously not the
way Desroches and the Tanners
( 14-6) wanted to end the season,
there’s still a silver lining for
Peabody -- almost the entire
roster will return next season.
“ Today, we got beat in those
areas of the game that don’t
show up in the box score --
winning loose balls, turnovers,
looki ng for the rebounds, anticipating
loose balls -- things
that you learn as you go along
playing this game,” Desroches
said. “ So now that’s what we
have to focus on. These girls,
as young as they are, have now
played tough games against
good teams. Now it’s time to
learn how to beat those teams
doing the little things.”
which runs through November
of tropical storms and
hurricanes that have impacted
our region occurred during
the months of August and
September, now is the time to
begin preparing yourself, your
family, your home and your
Emergency M anagement
important preparedness information
to help residents be
aware of, and prepare for, the
impacts of tropical storms and
hurricanes.
The National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration
( NOAA) seasonal outlook predicts
a near- or above-normal
number of hurricanes this season.
the entire Commonwealth, not
just coastal regions, and that all
