Writing an essay to advocate for acceptance into the college of your dreams is no easy feat. Luckily, 48-year-old former high school and college English teacher Kim Sokop is here to help. Her 17-year-old daughter Gracie will be graduating next year and Sokop is preparing her family for college even as she helps others achieve college dreams. “I taught a lot of juniors back when I was a full-time English teacher and we would talk about writing the essay and getting it done during the summer,” said Sokop. “I ended up doing some mini workshops at the two different high schools I worked at and it worked out great. I incorporate it into the classroom and now with my daughter having to take on this beast I thought ‘let’s make this a win-win situation to help her get going on it, get into a part-time job and help other kids.’” Sokop loves teaching teenagers and she thinks the response she has received from them is positive. “I thought ‘you know what, I’ll throw it out there and see who has an interest,’” she said. As junior year comes to an end, the stress of getting into college quickly amplifies, and Sokop is ready to lend a supportive helping hand to those who need help. Her skill set has been a valuable resource to parents and students looking for college help. Her coaching, of course, extends to her daughter Gracie, who has seen first-hand the experience of writing a college essay. “I am very nervous about writing my college essay because it is such a defining part of one’s college application,” said Gracie Sokop. “An essay needs a voice and personality which is often hard to add to an essay.” Sokop said Gracie helped her identify the value of holding college-preparation workshops and pinpointed strong interest among her peers in attending a workshop. “I think it is very cool that my mom uses her tools to reach out and help our community,” Gracie Sokop said. Sokop has strong advice for students writing their college essays. “Don’t think too hard about what question you are picking. Her full-time career put her culinary passion on the backburner, until she decided to take a leap of faith and get into the food business. “My first step was to approach the Wakefield Farmers Market because I would attend it as a customer,” Shah said. “I approached them last year and I asked them if they would want to host a farm-to-table demonstration. They were very excited. Then the Melrose Farmers Market found out about me and wanted to do the same thing.” At the farmers markets Shah introduces produce to customers and teaches them how to make fresh local produce into delectable delights. She finds children ages 7-11 tend to be the most open and curious. “I’m always experimenting with recipes at home when I feed friends and family,” Shah said. Experimenting comes with a risk and not all of her recipes turn out to be tasty. Her husband will be the first to tell her if a recipe is a dud. Despite this, she continues with her focus on seasonal fresh produce and will attempt recipes until something turns out to be divine like her strawberry and cilantro salad dressing that has been a hit at the farmer’s markets. Shah takes clients on a vegetarian voyage, teaching classes and events demonstrating varied styles of cuisine. Her upcoming event July 16 hosted by Curio Spice Company in Cambridge focuses on Indian street food, and how the best food can be found in unlikely places. Her recipes are simple, only taking about 30 minutes to make. “You want all food to be approachable,” she said, adding, “I’m really passionate about talking to people and understanding where people are coming from, how they make food and how they approach food. Most of the shows that I would watch, that were based on food, of course, were based on non-vegetarian food but to me it was never about the actual food on the plate it was the story behind the food.” Shah believes that if you can connect to the person who’s eating your food, that’s the only thing in that moment that matters. Shah’s blog Fork on a Road speaks volumes to her passions and ambitions with food. “The platform is more coming back to basics. The blog is a channel to reach out on those levels,” she said. She wants readers and students to go back to a place where they feel nourished, mind as well as body, as they expand their horizons with food.
