On June 30 Peabody firefighters will be
participating in the Bike MS: Cape Cod
Getaway 2018 in honor of Peabody
firefighter Dan Pimenta, who died last July.
Pimenta had Multiple Sclerosis (MS) for 25
years, but he was an avid biker who would bike
for hours at a time. He was riding when he was
tragically struck by a car in Beverly and died
at the scene. For Peabody Fire Department
Honor Guard Bike Team members who rode
with Pimenta in Bike MS, this year is their first
year without Pimenta, but they will ride in honor
of the friend and colleague they dubbed “Mr.
Peabody.”
“No matter what it was he was involved in it,”
said Lt. Stephen Pellegrini.
Bike MS is a two-day, 150-mile ride and the
RIDING IT OUT FOR A FIREFIGHTER
RIDING
FROM PAGE 1
Cape Cod Getaway is the largest
MS ride in New England.
Beginning on Saturday
morning, June 30, more than
2,000 riders will pedal from
Quincy through the coastal
towns of Massachusetts’ South
Shore to the beginning of Cape
Cod. Eighty four percent of all
proceeds go to MS research.
Team members include
Sean Hamel, David LaForge,
Lisa LaForge, Larissa Lang,
Kevin Lombardi, Dan Pimenta,
Stephanie Pimenta, Bryan
Silva, Tony Silva and John
West and Peabody Firefighters:
Stephen Pellegrini (team captain),
Alexander Bernardo,
Chris Dowling, John Hosman,
David Osgood, Billy Silva and
Paul Silva.
“We are going to ride in his
honor,” said Dowling. “ He’s
still the honorary team captain.”
Multiple sclerosis is an unpredictable,
often disabling,
disease of the central nervous
system that interrupts the flow
of information within the brain,
and between the brain and body.
Millions of people are affected
by MS and the challenges of
living with its unpredictable
symptoms, which range from
numbness and tingling to blindness
and paralysis.
Pimenta held a strong conviction
to help battle MS. He
participated in MS walks in
Marblehead, but he wanted to
find something more physically
challenging. When he discovered
Bike MS, he got his fellow
Peabody firefighters involved.
“Dan really took off with it.
Basically right after he joined
the fire department he found
out about it. It never slowed
him down, he never stopped
doing anything. He was as
tough as nails. At one point he
was biking 60 miles everyday,”
Pellegrini said.
Pimenta rode his bike every
day and his Sundays were
his days to take long rides to
Gloucester or Ipswich.
“We all did it because of
him,” said Capt. John Hosman.
“He was the best rider out of all
of us, none of us could keep up
with him.”
“Danny got me on a bicycle
and most of the other Honor
Guard members followed too,”
added Inspector Lieutenant
Christopher Dowling. “Danny
recruited us within the Honor
Guard and the department, so
we figured the Honor Guard
could support this cycling
team.”
Lombardi and a friend were
recruited by Pimenta, they were
the first two non-firefighters to
get involved in Bike MS.
“For us to get involved was
really exciting because these
guys are first responders,” said
Lombardi. “That was the opportunity
to open up to other team
members. Dan did a lot of work
for the MS society, very benign
because he didn’t really announce
that he had the disease until a year
ago. I knew it because I have
three generations of family members
with MS in my family so I
have always been involved. One
day he rode his bike over to my
house and noticed I was training
for the event. I’m not much of a
cyclist so he recruited me.”
Pellegrini said Pimenta had
his own special way to motivate
people to get on two wheels.
“People who were thinking
about riding, he would pester
you until you started riding,”
said Pellegrini. “If you didn’t
want to ride he wouldn’t let
you get away with it, you were
going to ride.”
The team recommends safety
while cycling which includes
wearing a helmet and protective
gear. The team strongly recommends
Road ID bracelets which
have personal information if
someone were to get in an accident
on the road.
Dan Pimenta leaves behind a
wife, Donna and two children,
Jake and Stephanie. Stephanie
is a part of the Peabody Fire
Department Honor Guard Bike
Team and will be riding this year.
“Dan was a great motivator
for all of us,” said Hosman. “He
was one of the greatest motivators
I ever met.”
JUNE 21, 2018
The city of Peabody will be
holding its annual Household
Hazardous Waste Day for Peabody
residents on Saturday,
June 23 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at
the Department of Public Services,
50 Farm Ave.
The event, which will be held
rain or shine, provides residents
with the opportunity to dispose
of hazardous materials in an environmentally
responsible manner.
The maximum amount of material
a resident can dispose is a full
car load which is 25 gallons or
25 pounds. Contractors may not
use Household Hazardous Waste
Day to dispose of materials.
Teachers at Peabody Veterans
Memorial High School are not
happy with Interm Superintendent
Herbert Levine as he prepares
for his finals days before
retirement: Teachers argue there
will be budget cuts; Levine says
the budget is being increased.
"The budget was not cut, it
was increased from $71 million
to $72.8 million. An increase
of $1.8 million from last year,"
Levine said.
Teachers participated in a
"work-to-rule" action, which
means participating teachers did
not put in any work hours on a
voluntary basis beyond the mandatory
workday, nor did they
perform any functions outside
the strict terms of the contract.
"No one likes to be ignored.
When teachers speak to their
administration about their career
and professional concerns,
they want the respect of being
listened to," Peabody Veterans
Memorial High School teacher
Mike Hawes said. "With workto-rule,
this was our opportunity
to fully gain the attention of
the community and for them to
watch, listen, and see what is
getting cut in their schools."
Mike Hawes believes the budget
does not benefit the students.
(no latex paint), varnishes, pesticides,
spray cans and other
household hazardous chemicals.
In addition, residents may
dispose of mercury-containing
waste, including batteries,
thermometers, thermostats,
and fluorescent lamps. Please
be advised that the city of Peabody
allows residents to drop
off waste oil, car batteries, tires,
and propane tanks during normal
business hours year round
at 50 Farm Ave. Please note that
the recycling center at 50 Farm
Ave. will be closed on Household
Hazardous Waste Day.
A full list of accepted materials
may be obtained from the
Health Department (978-538-
"Students are impacted even
more, when cuts occur. Fewer
teachers equals larger class sizes,
less access to services. Cuts
in supplies mean less educational
opportunities for students," he
said.
To Levine, the issue is that
the teachers don't like areas
where money was cut from the
budget. He said salaries were
increased by 2 percent, and the
schools added 20 teachers to
keep class sizes low.
"We don't want class sizes to
balloon," Levine said.
Levine said hiring those
teachers added $1.4 million to
NSCC Launches
Social Media
Certificate Program
One-year college program leads to
hottest jobs in today’s economy
Statistics show that this week,
in a 25-mile radius of Danvers,
there are, 2,067 jobs that require
social media skills, with salaries
starting at $40,000 and growing
to $95,000. Job titles like ‘director
of social media’ and
‘digital and social media manager’
at the Boston Globe, CBS
Corporation, Dunkin Brands
and Fidelity Investments have
become common. Small and
medium size companies often
add social media requirements
to existing marketing communications
job descriptions.
The number of higher education
institutions offering
courses in social media is
growing but not fast enough
to meet demand. North Shore
Community College recognizes
the education gap for traditional
students coming out of
high school and professionals
in the workforce with no social
media marketing experience.
The college launched its first
social media marketing strategy
course in 2015.
This fall, NSCC will offer
Massachusetts’ first 30-credit
social media marketing certificate
program. Students completing
the one-year (10-course)
certificate will fill the employment
gap in social media marketing
jobs upon graduation.
The NSCC Social Media
Marketing Certificate uses the
latest educational methodologies
to provide theory and
practice in the ever-evolving
world of digital and social
media marketing. The advanced
marketing courses in
this program all include critical
industry certifications
that social media agencies and
businesses demand, such as
Google Analytics, Hootsuite,
Buffer, Facebook Blueprint
and Google Adwords. Courses
are updated continually to keep
up with changing technologies
and best practices.
“I applaud our dedicated faculty
and academic leaders for
the foresight and initiative to
develop this innovative program
which positions NSCC
as the Massachusetts state
leader in this exploding field,”
said Dr. Patricia A. Gentile,
NSCC President. “The program
is solid and cutting-edge.
Its development, review, and
approval has included input
from experts from the college’s
Marketing Program Advisory
Board, non-NSCC affiliated
faculty members, and industry
leaders in the field, with final
approval coming from the
Massachusetts state Board of
Higher Education.”
Social Media Marketing
Certificate courses include:
Marketing, Advertising, Social
Media Marketing Strategy,
E-Marketing and Introduction
to Business, Intro to Digital
Photography, Integrated
Design Principles, Electronic
Imaging, Composition and
Public Speaking. Financial aid
is available for those needing
assistance to complete the 10
courses. Professionals who
have already completed A.S.
or B.S. degrees can have applicable
courses transferred to
this program for credit.
Students can begin the Social
Media Marketing Certificate
program and subsequently expand
their academic credentials
to earn an A.S. in Marketing or
Graphic Design.
The Greenbelt Board of
Directors has announced
that Kate Bowditch, who has
served in leadership positions
at the Charles River Watershed
Association for almost 25
years, will become President
of Greenbelt, Essex County’s
Land Trust.
Bowditch, a published scientist
and nationally-recognized
expert in conservation, helped
transform the Charles River
from a heavily-polluted waterway
to one of the cleanest
urban rivers in the country.
“We are excited to have Kate
bring her considerable gifts and
skills to the work of Greenbelt
– conserving farmland, wildlife
habitat and scenic landscapes
across Essex County,” said
Philip Lake, Greenbelt Board
Chair. “The ‘Greenbelt culture’
is important to us” he added,
“and the Search Committee
worked long and well to find
someone who would be a good
fit in addition to bringing the
requisite professional qualifications.
Kate is that person.”
In September, Bowditch will
succeed Ed Becker, who built
Greenbelt from a small, threeperson
organization to a groundbreaking,
national leader in land
conservation with a talented
staff of fourteen professionals.
“I couldn’t be more excited
about coming to Greenbelt,”
said Bowditch. “I’m inspired by
the people here, by the land and
the water, and by the opportunity
to work on critical conservation
and stewardship projects
across this diverse county.”
Bowditch worked at the intersection
of science and conservation
at CRWA, leading efforts to
improve the Charles River watershed
and parklands in the 35
cities and towns through which
it runs. She created CRWA’s
Blue Cities Initiative, a planning
approach that promotes the use
of green infrastructure to restore
natural hydrology to the urban
environment. She has developed
partnerships with Boston universities,
and helped achieve success
with complex projects such
as the Charles River Gateway
at the site of the old Medfield
State Hospital. At different
times, she led a team of six staff
scientists, directed CRWA’s
advocacy program, served as
Director of Projects, Director
As Chair of the Brookline
Conservation Commission,
Bowditch worked to create new
parks, restore a sanctuary, and
develop three open space plans.
“Greenbelt’s focus on getting
people out into nature is
particularly appealing to me,
as is the role of conservation
in building climate resiliency,”
said Bowditch, whose background
also includes teaching
in Kenya and working with the
International Commission for the
protection of the Danube River in
Europe. Most recently, she developed
a partnership for river restoration
in the Dominican Republic
with funding from Riverprize, the
world’s foremost award in river
basin management.
“Kate’s exemplary record of
experience and accomplishments
is balanced with her personal
gifts,” added Annie Madden,
Chair of Greenbelt’s Search
Committee. “She is warm, open,
thoughtful and genuine, and I
predict she will win the respect
of the entire Greenbelt community
and others across the county
in no time at all.”
TREATING SEASONAL ALLERGY SYMPTOMS
If you suffer from red, itchy eyes, you are probably experiencing seasonal
allergy symptoms that seem to start earlier and last longer than usual. These and
other symptoms are due to an allergic response to airborne pollen that triggers
the body to produce histamines, which are chemicals associated with teary eyes,
runny noses, and sneezing that help to flush allergens from the body. While many
allergy sufferers rely on oral allergy medications such as loratadine (Claritin),
fexofenadine (Allegra), or cetirizine (Zyrtec) to suppress overproduction of
histamines, evidence shows that over-the-counter nasal sprays do a better job.
While allergy pills work by preventing histamines from attaching to cells, corticosteroid
nasal sprays stop certain cells in the nasal passages from producing
histamine.
When your allergies are making you miserable, nasal sprays can bring relief.
But which nasal spray is right for you? Do you need a prescription, or will an
over-the-counter product do? Most patients easily tolerate prescription nasal
sprays, which are formulated for long-term use. But people with any damage to
their nasal passages should avoid nasal sprays. For more information, please call
VILLAGE PHARMACY at 781-334-3133. We are located in the Colonial Shopping
Center and open Mon.-Fri., 9-8; Sat. 9-5; and Sun. and holidays, 9-1:30.
WEEKLYNEWS.NET - 978-532-5880 7
A blackberry 101 class
Seattle is a beautiful city if
you like delicious food and
fine art. I will never forget the
amazing bouquets of flowers
at the famous Pike Market
nor will I forget the variety of
fish being tossed by the fish
mongers to any chef willing
to make the catch there. It’s a
crowded show for tourists, but
a beautiful one.
On another trip we were invited
to use a cottage owned
by a friend on the San Juan
Islands. We took a train to meet
the ferry that would take us to
the island. As the train rumbled
over the winding coastal track,
I noticed the plump blackberries
growing practically, but
not quite, within our reach.
On the ferry, it was a delicious
day, and we saw many small
whales diving around our boat.
We were met by our friends
and shortly thereafter their
two boys and I were plucking
blackberries, quickly filling
a few buckets with those luscious
things. The boys were
motivated by the promise of a
pie, but we ended up with so
many berries that I gave the
two of them, aged eight to ten,
a blackberry 101 class. We did
make a pie, but we also made
turnovers and chilled cream
of blackberry soup - which
is a melted ambrosia. One of
the boys loved the lesson because
he was very interested in
cooking. The other loved it because
he was very interested in
eating. Todd and I, of course,
enjoyed it too, as did the parents
of the two boys. Here are
some of the dishes we made
some wonderful treats for
your loved ones.
Berry Crostata
If you are a fan of my writing and recipes please
promise me that this summer you will learn to make a
delicious pie dough. You owe it to yourself. It’s so easy
to do well once you master a couple of key elements,
and the world is filled with so many pies with poorly
made dough that you will be shocked by the difference.
— In a food processor place a cup and a half of plain
flour, a tsp. of salt, two tbsp. sugar and pulse to combine.
— Cut up a stick of cold butter into eight pieces and
pulse a few seconds.
— Add a tbsp. of cold Crisco and pulse to combine
with flour and butter mixture and quickly turn machine
off as soon as you notice the mixture is starting to form
a ball. It is critical not to overwork the dough, which
will toughen as you bring out more of the gluten, so I
will repeat - Only run the food processor just until a ball
starts to form, then turn it right off.
— Gather dough and shape it into a large burger shape,
wrap in wax paper and refrigerate for thirty minutes.
— Meanwhile, wash and pick over about two and a
half cups of berries. Don’t worry about any berries that
are overly ripe - put them aside and use them for jam,
the recipe for which follows later.
— Wash and drain the berries, place in a bowl and set
aside until the dough is chilled.
— On a chilled surface, sprinkle a little flour and trace
a twelve inch circle with your finger as a guide for rolling
out the dough. Place the rolled out circle of dough on a
jelly roll pan. A cookie sheet is not good because if the
berries drip it will make a mess in your oven.
— Mix a heaping tbsp. of flour and a cup of sugar, a
sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg if you like and gently
toss the berries.
— Spoon into the middle of the dough, allowing three
inches all around to be gathered with your hands. You
should have about a three inch circle of berries visible.
— Brush the dough with buttermilk, cream or an egg
wash, sprinkle with sugar and bake in a 375 preheated
oven until the dough is lightly browned and the berries
begin to “weep.”
— If the berries are very juicy you can pour off some
of the juice into a heat proof bowl during the baking and
return to oven until the dough is browned.
— Allow to cool slightly and serve with whipped cream.
A Prayer to the Holy Spirit
Holy Spirit. You who made me see everything and
showed me the way to reach my ideal. You who gave
me the divine gift to forgive and to forget the wrong
that is done to me and you who are in all instances of
my life with me. I, in this short dialogue want to thank
you for everything and confirm once more that I never
want to be separated from you no matter how great
the material desire may be. I want to be with you and
my loved ones in your perpetual glory. Amen. Thank
you for your love towards me and my loved ones.
Persons must pray the prayer three consecutive days
without asking their wish. After third day the wish will
be granted no matter how difficult it may be. Then
promise to publish this dialogue as soon as this favor
is granted. I will never stop trusting in God and his
power.
Meagher gets
Moynihan honor
Sports
By Steve Krause
PEABODY — Jennie Meagher of
Bishop Fenwick and Andrew Riccio of
Hamilton-Wenham were recognized as
the Moynihan Lumber Student Athletes
of the Year during a luncheon at Salem
Country Club June 12.
Meagher, a standout volleyball and
basketball player for the Crusaders;
and Riccio, who played lacrosse for
the Generals, each received a $1,000
scholarship to help defray costs to their
respective colleges -- Villanova for
Meagher and Boston College for Riccio.
Meagher was the winner for the month
of March, when she was at her best on the
basketball court. She led the Crusaders
in rebounds with 9.1 per game, and led
Fenwick to its second Division 3 North
championship in three years with a dominating
presence in the paint during the
MIAA postseason tournament. She was
immense in Fenwick’s tournament over
St. Mary’s, scoring eight points but starring
defensively in keeping the Spartans’
Olivia Nazaire in check.
“She never knew what it was like to
not play in a north sectional final,” said
coach Adam DeBaggis, “and that was
largely due to her.
“As a coach, you find yourself having
to teach leadership skills to some
players,” said DeBaggis. “But you never
had to do that with Jennie.”
Both Meagher and Riccio spoke briefly
after being presented by plaques. In the
process of her speech, she especially
thanked her mother, Dina, “who was always
there for me after the game, when I
was faced with four hours of homework.
“She’d go out and get me my ice coffee
at Dunkin’ Donuts while I stayed up and
stressed about everything,” she said.
Riccio made the 300-point career
mark in the Generals’ last game, a 9-6
Division 3 North semifinal loss to
Ipswich Monday,
“He needed five points to get it, and
he got it,” said H-W coach Josh Wedge,
“and I’m glad he did.
“I’d have been even more distraught
than I was already if he did, because I
thought of all the games I’d pulled him
out of so that he’d be rested and ready
for the next game.”
“It’s an honor and a blessing to receive
this,” said Riccio, “especially with the
crazy number of worthy student-athletes
in the area.”
Moynihan Lumber has honored student-athletes
monthly during the school
year since 1991-92. An overall winner is
announced at the end of each year.
Also receiving recognition was
Meghan Duggan, who was the captain
of the gold-medal winning women’s
hockey team this past winter in South
Korea. She spoke, displaying her medals.
“I received a piece of advice after
our first silver,” she said, “from Angela
Ruggerio, our captain. She said ‘let
people see them.’ These medals tell the
story of my life.”
Duggan also received the Post-
Graduate Achievement Award.
Also among the speakers was Colin
Blackwell, a former St. John’s Prep
standout who is now in the Buffalo
Sabres organization.
James Ridley, who will go back in retirement
after two years as principal at
St. Mary’s, was given a career achievement
award, and Mary Ryan, the retiring
athletic director at Rockport received a
Lifetime Commitment Award for her
work in the schools. Matt Williams, a
reporter for the Salem News, received
a Lifetime Commitment Award for his
work in the community.
And freelance photographer Rose
Raymond was presented with this year’s
Fan Award.
Methuen.
Tanner softball falls
in quarterfinals
By Anne Marie Tobin
METHUEN — The Peabody softball
team’s season came to end June 12 at
Burnham Field with a 4-1 loss to host
and No. 4 seed Methuen in the quarterfinals
of the Division 1 North tournament.
The game was deadlocked at 1-1
going into the bottom of the sixth inning,
but the Rangers blew the game wide
open with three runs, the big hit being a
two-out, two-run triple by leadoff hitter
Stephanie Tardugno.
The Tanners went dry at the plate,
scratching out only three base hits, one
of them a bunt, and also struggled with a
slight case of early game nerves.
“Yes, I think we maybe had a few
nerves early, and you could see it in warmups
a little bit, but it came down to we
couldn’t hit,” said Peabody coach Butch
Melanaphy. “We knew against that
pitcher we needed to take more pitches,
but the kids didn’t, and I think she ended
up throwing something like 56 pitches
the whole game. We were swinging too
early and made it easy for them. But the
bottom line is you aren’t going to win
too many games with only three hits.
Peabody starter Tianna Dawe pitched
in and out of trouble the whole game,
starting with the first inning, when the
Rangers had runners at second and third
with only one out. Dawe buckled down
and struck out the next two batters to get
out of the inning unscathed. She wasn’t
as lucky in the second inning when an
infield error on the first at bat of the inning
came back to bite the Tanners. Cari
Rizzo reached on the booted ball, got
to second on a passed ball, third on a
throwing error and scored on a single by
Five Tanners on Northeastern Conference
All-Star team. Page 12.
Taylor Cassidy.
Peabody came right back in the top
of the third with a run to level the score
at 1-1. Makayla Iannalfo led off and
reached on an error. She got to second
on a passed ball and was singled to
third by Makayla Rooney and scored on
Mackenzie Marmion’s sacrifice fly to
center field.
After that, the Tanners were held in
check. They had just two more baserunners
the rest of the game; Lucianna
Mastromatteo, who led off the fourth
with a single, and Mallory LeBlanc, who
led off the sixth with a single.
Peabody escaped another threat in the
fourth inning with an unconventional
inning-ending 6-3-6-2 double play. The
Rangers had runners at second and third
with one out. Tardugno hit a grounder to
LeBlanc at short, who looked the runner
at third back and fired across the diamond
to get the out at first. Mastromatteo
spotted both runners well off the base
and threw back to LeBlanc, who fired
home to catcher Kristina Rossignol to
get the runner attempting to score.
Following the game, Melanaphy could
only wonder what might have been.
“It was a pretty well-played game
by both teams, they got the hits and we
didn’t, but we could have beaten that
team,” he said. “We just need to make
them throw more pitches, but in the end
our best hitters just didn’t hit today. It
still was a great season, but we should
have beaten that team.”

The Peabody Little League team captured the District 16 title last year against Peabody Western.
FILE PHOTO
Peabody LL out to defend district title
By Anne Marie Tobin
PEABODY — The Peabody Little League all stars
begin their District 16 title defense next Tuesday,
June 26 at home at MacArthur Park against Saugus
American. First pitch is 5:45 p.m.
Suffice it to say, this year’s team has a tough act to
follow.
Last year was a banner year, as in District 16 championship
banner, for Peabody.
The season was a magical ride from start to finish
as Peabody ended a 20-year district championship
drought, only to come up short in its quest for a Section
4 title and the chance to play for a state championship.
Nonetheless it was a breakout season for Peabody,
which finally one-upped Peabody Western in capturing
the district title. West had had Peabody’s number in recent
years, with 12 district titles in the last 20 years
compared to just one for Peabody.
Peabody had never won a District 16 title and the last
time the league captured a district championship was in
1997 when Peabody American won the District 15 title,
but all of the pieces of the puzzle were in place when
the league received approval to merge its two district
teams - formerly Peabody White and Peabody Blue -
combining the best of the Blue and White into what
what turned out to be a “super” team.
The championship game fittingly came down to
the two cross-city rivals, and it was a beauty, marking
the beginning of what is sure to be an annual bragging-rights
battle.
Through five innings, Peabody had a stranglehold
over West, leading 3-0, thanks to a dominant effort
from Peabody starter Justin Powers, who held West to
just three baserunners, and timely hitting from Carson
Browne (leadoff home run) and pinch hitter Matt
Richards (RBI single). Down to its last out in the top of
the sixth inning, but Nick Villano blasted a 2-run homer
to right and suddenly the deficit had been slashed to
3-2. Two pitches later, Tyler Fawcett smashed a solo
shot to left to tie the game at 3-3 and send the contest
into extra innings, where Powers scored the game-winning
run in the eighth inning on a wild pitch.
This year, however, Peabody will be hard-pressed
to duplicate the success of the 2017 team, which featured
eight returning players. The only two players
returning from last year’s team are Daniel Zizza and
Cam Connolly, who are expected to lead the pitching
rotation. Others in the mix for time on the mound are
Reymi Andino, Luke Joyce, Josh Sigmon, Michael
Petro and Angel Santiago, all of whom will also see
time in the infield, with Sigmon also in the catching
mix. Alex Silva is also in the pitching and outfield mix.
Also in the mix for outfield play time are Colin
Ridley, Mike DeLoreto and Christian Kaminski, with
Ridley and Kaminski also seeing time behind the plate.
The only 11-year old on the squad is infielder Jariel
Tolentino.
Manager Rick DeLoreto says the strength of the team
is its balance.
“We will be a good-hitting team from top to bottom
and we are strong defensively, but I think our pitching
is very good,” said DeLoreto. “We have two hardthrowing
lefties in Cam Connolly and Danny Zizza
and Remy Andino also throws hard. They all have two
good pitches and think we can make a good run of it
with our pitching.”
DeLoreto is confident that the team will compete, especially
considering most of them played together on
the 11-year team that went 3-2 in districts.
“We had two 11-year olds (Zizzi and Connolly) who
were moved up, so we didn’t have them with this group
last year, so that alone gives me the confidence that we
will be right in the mix.”
DeLoreto says Lynnfield is the team with a target on
its back this year.
“They been together a long time and I don’t think
they have lost a district game, either as 10s or 11s, so
they are the team everyone will be looking to knock
off.”
Should Peabody beat Saugus American Tuesday, it
won’t have to wait too long to find out if Lynnfield is,
indeed, the team to beat, as Lynnfield is scheduled to
play the winner of that game on June 28.
WEEKLYNEWS.NET - 978-532-5880 11
Peabody Western set to challenge
PEABODY — When the
Peabody Western Little League
all-stars begins the district tournament
this Sunday at East Lynn
against Lynn Shore at 2 p.m.,
they will be looking to getting
back into the winning circle for
the first time since 2013.
Last year, the team was upended
in an epic final by crosscity
rival Peabody, which won
its first district in 20 years. With
eight returning players on last
year’s team, Peabody had a decided
edge over West in the experience
department, but this
year, West may have turned
tables.
On paper at least, West looks
to have the edge in experience
with four returning players, led
by Nick Villano, a power hitter
who will see time on the mound
and at first base. Villano finished
last year’s district tournament on
a tear, blasting home runs in each
of West’s last three games. His
finale was particularly memorable
as it jump-started an improbable
comeback in the championship
game, sparking a 3-run
rally in the last inning against
Peabody to force the game into
extra winnings.
Jayce Dooley also returns will
see time pitching and will likely
play outfield, while Josh Scali
will also pitch and play third
base. Thomas Fabbo rounds out
the group of returners and will
see time pitching and catching
and at shortstop
New to the team this year are
Andy Bousquet and Ty Zito,
who will see time pitching
and in the outfield along with
second baseman/shortstop
Jac ob Behn; first baseman/outfielder
John Horgan; outfielders
Steve Porcella and A.J. Forte;
and pitcher/outfielder Anthony
Herbert. West will carry just
one 11-year old in Alex Jackson,
who will likely see time catching
and in the outfield.
The team will be managed for
a second straight year by Stephen
Porcella, who says the strength
of the team is its versatility.
“We have speed and a lot of
versatility, with almost every
player capable of playing multiple
positions, which makes my
job easy,” he said. “We have
plenty of pitching depth, which
is also very important when it
comes to this tournament, so I
look for us to be very competitive
again this year.”
As far as the competition goes,
Porcella says Lynnfield is the
team to beat.
“Lynnfield definitely looks to
be the strongest team as with six
major league teams and about 70
kids to choose from, they have a
lot of kids. Plus I believe they
have all of their kids back from
the 11-year old team that won
districts last year and that’s a
group of kids who have played
together for a good five or six
years now, so I expect they will
be the team to beat.
