Special Unit Removes Broken Drill Bits
from Workpiece Holes
To help manufacturing companies
deal with a particular problem caused
by cutting-tool breakage, Heun
GmbH, a producer of machine tools
and accessories, offers the TR100
broken-tap remover. This compact,
lightweight, portable device provides
a highly efficient and cost-effective
means of quickly extracting a drill bit
that has broken off and become stuck
in a hole in the workpiece.
Depending on the workpiece material
and the size and form of the
broken screw tap, removal of such
a remnant from a workpiece can
be very difficult. The easy-handling
TR100, however, is designed to make
the removal of such tool fragments
easy. Offering all-around applicability,
Heun’s high-performance machine
can reliably deal with both large and

small workpieces and level or
inclined workpiece surfaces. It features
a swivelling head that enables
machining positions usually difficult
to access to be reached.
The Heun TR100 drill bit
remover uses ordinary supply
water (tap water) as the machining
dielectric fluid, and any brass or copper
electrode up to a maximum diameter
of 6.5 mm may be employed.
The machine can remove the broken
tool piece without damaging the hole
thread.
In addition, the TR100 can be
placed into service to produce start
holes for wire-EDM cutting operations
and to cut workpieces made of
carbide or any hardened steel. The

includes autofeed, auto retract, depth

setting (programming to stop at a
specific depth) and selectable arc timing,
as well as work-head swivelling.
Alarm messages alert the operator to
arrival at the programmed depth, and
warn of arcing or overheating.
The generator unit of the TR100
broken-tap remover weighs 17 kg,
and the work head weighs 6 kg with
its magnetically mounting stand.
