I were born during it.
During the song Dil
ki gihra khol do, she
was carrying me and
she had to wear a
corset to appear slim.
As a kid, I happened
to be thin. I’d blame
her for that. I’d say,
“You pressed me
inside! Hence, I’m
so skinny.”
I’d accompany her
to Gaiety and Galaxy
theatres in Bandra.
I remember watching
Sholay (1975) there.
The Mausiji scene
with Dharmendraji
was fun. And so was
the Yeh dosti hum
nahin chodenge
number. We friends
would ride a bicycle
around Pali Hill,
singing this song.
Gabbar Singh (Amjad
Khan) was terrifying
for me as a child. He
left an impact.
MOM’ S TALES
Mom never regretted
quitting films. She’d
say, “I reached my
peak. I’ve given so
much to my work.
I want to enjoy the
other things of life.
Family is what
I want. It’s not a
sacrifice.” When she
became a MP and
had to travel, I’d
cry saying how can
you leave me and
go. So she’d take
me along. Also, she
was not taken in by
her stardom. She
was simple. She’d
get dressed within
five minutes. Just a
lipstick and she’d
be done. She loved
white sarees with
borders or pastelhued
sarees. When
she’d watch her old
films, she’d laugh
at herself because
she couldn’t
dance. She’d
visit our school
as a normal
parent. She
had no qualms
eating paani
puri from the
roadside stall.
Mom passed away
when I was 13 (May
3, 1981). Till then,
I knew her just as a
mother. Not as a star.
After her demise,
I realised her stature.
Then I happened to
do TV production in
the US. Back home,
Films Division
wanted me to make
a biography on
her. I was more
than happy. In
the process of
talking to her peers
and colleagues,
I understood
many facets of her
personality. It was
therapeutic for
me. I even began
appreciating her
cinema. Whenever
I watch Mother India
(1957), it leaves me
teary-eyed. It has
crossed barriers
of time. Even
today, filmmakers
are inspired by
it. Mom was not
even 30 when she
gave such a mature
performance.
Our equation
with our father
also changed after
mom passed away.
Earlier, he was
a disciplinarian.
Our dining room
conversation was
never about films.
But after mom’s
death, he changed
completely. He
shared many
memories of her.
Like he said, “People
say I fell in love
after I saved her
from the fire on the
set of Mother India.
