meeting and Scholarship<br />
fund-raising Practice<br />
and Policy Seminar, on<br />
Thursday, September<br />
20, <strong>2018</strong>. A panel of<br />
distinguished expert<br />
guests will be there<br />
sharing information about<br />
legislative issues impacting<br />
nurses and healthcare.<br />
Up-to-date evidence and<br />
information on legislation<br />
and its’ impact on the<br />

President, District 2<br />
role of nurses and healthcare will be discussed and<br />
information on how to influence this legislation is<br />
critical to all nurses. The Seminar is at Martin’s West,<br />
6817 Dogwood Rd., Baltimore, located between I-695<br />
exits for Security Blvd. and Liberty Rd. It will begin<br />
at 6:30 with a buffet meal and networking, followed by<br />
the Panelist and Keynote speakers’ presentation.<br />
A small contribution is requested from nurses<br />
and nursing students who attend this event. All<br />
funds collected are paid to the District 2 Scholarship<br />
fund for a first-generation nursing student in a prelicensure<br />
baccalaureate or graduate <strong>Maryland</strong> nursing<br />
school program.<br />

District 7 News<br />
District 7 members presented information on the<br />
importance of a healthy diet while helping attendee’s<br />
plant fruit and vegetable seeds at Aberdeen’s Earth<br />
Day celebration.<br />
On May 7, <strong>2018</strong> <strong>Maryland</strong> <strong>Nurse</strong>s Association<br />
(MNA) District (DNA) 9 held their annual awards<br />
dinner prepared by renowned Executive Chef Kendall<br />
Selby. A scholarly presentation titled "Mission Possible:<br />
Making the Healthcare Workplace Safe Again" was<br />
given by keynote speaker, Dr. Lori Yerrell-Garrett,<br />
DNP, RN, CNS-PMH, BC, Deputy Chief <strong>Nurse</strong><br />
Executive, Saint Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington,<br />
D.C. The event was held at Middleton Hall in Waldorf,<br />
<strong>Maryland</strong>. Among the attendees where notable<br />
dignitaries who issued citations and proclamations to<br />
DNA 9 in recognition of <strong>Nurse</strong>s week <strong>2018</strong>.<br />
Community leaders included nursing advocate<br />
and prominent community leader, Delegate Edith<br />
Patterson (Charles County) <strong>Maryland</strong> House of<br />
Delegates; prestigious healthcare advocate, Dr. Howard<br />
Haft, Deputy Secretary for Public Health, <strong>Maryland</strong><br />
Department of Health and Mental Hygiene; eminent<br />
leader, Delegate Michael A. Jackson (Calvert and<br />
Prince Georges County), <strong>Maryland</strong> House of Delegates;<br />
and influential representative, Delegate Deborah<br />
C. Rey of St. Mary’s County, <strong>Maryland</strong> House of<br />
Delegates. MNA DNA 9 recognized nurses working<br />
or residing in Southern <strong>Maryland</strong> by issuing awards<br />
and scholarships that included an Advanced Nursing<br />
scholarship presented to Linette Robinson, RN of<br />
Genesis Healthcare currently enrolled at the University<br />
of <strong>Maryland</strong>, College Park in the Bachelor of Science in<br />
Nursing (BSN) program. The Caring award, presented<br />
to Penelope Michaels, a school nurse at Great Mills<br />
High School in Great Mills, <strong>Maryland</strong>, whose heroic<br />
efforts temporarily sustained the life of Jaelynn Willey<br />
following gun violence at the school.<br />
The night was full of surprises as Jocelyn Carter, a<br />
nursing student at the College of Southern <strong>Maryland</strong><br />
received an on the spot Delegate Edith Patterson<br />

scholarship to continue her studies in pursuit of an<br />
Associate of Applied Science in Nursing (AASN)<br />
degree. Senator Thomas V. Mike Miller, <strong>Maryland</strong><br />
Senate President gifted DNA 9 with a silent auction<br />
item valued at $300, as well as a host of prizes for all in<br />
attendance. MNA DNA 9, also paid homage to outgoing<br />
Chief Staff Officer, Ed Suddath in appreciation for his<br />
professionalism and leadership during his tenure with<br />
the MNA, he will be missed. MNA DNA 9 would<br />
like to extend our gratitude and appreciation to all of<br />
the local businesses who sponsored and contributed<br />
to the event, as well as the new members who joined,<br />
particularly newly appointed Board Member at Large,<br />
Donna Noccolino, BSN, RN, CCM.<br />
