Phoneme blending activities
Phoneme blending is the ability to combine spoken phonemes into words.
Sound riddles
Play a sound blending game with the pupils.
1. Think of a word and say the separate sounds that make up the word; for example, /t/ /r/ /u/ and /k/
for truck.
2. The pupils listen to the sounds and combine them to make the word truck.
3. Begin by using shorter words and increase the difficulty with longer words. (See the lists below.)
4. Allow the pupils to think of their own words to share with the class in the same manner.

This activity will help pupils blend sounds.

1. As in the activity above, invite pupils to select their own words.
Two-syllable words
2. After each pupil thinks of a word, have him or her say it slowly to determine the individual sounds.
3. Invite each pupil, in turn, to say each sound in the word as classmates try to guess it.
