Phoneme addition and substitution involves changing a phoneme in a word to make a new word.<br />

Making new words<br />

The pupils will determine the creation of new words with this activity.<br />

1. To play, say a word. Then ask how the word would change if a particular sound was added. For<br />

example, ‘Listen to the word flee. What word do we have if we add /t/ at the end?’ (fleet)<br />

2. Continue in this manner with the words listed below. Allow the pupils to create some of their own<br />

phonemic additions.<br />

• pin /ch/ • clam /p/ • /a/ cross<br />

• wind /y/ • gas /p/ • /s/ car<br />

• plan /t/ • fir /st/ • /t/ rip<br />

Presto change-o!<br />

Similar to the activity above, the pupils determine how a word changes when one sound is replaced with<br />

another.<br />

1. To play, say a word. Then ask how the word would change if a particular sound were substituted <strong>for</strong><br />

another. For example, ‘Listen to the word trip. What word would we have if we changed the /p/ to<br />

/m/?’ (trim)<br />

2. Continue in this manner with the words listed below. Allow the pupils to create some of their own<br />

phonemic substitutions.<br />

• dog/log<br />

• pit/pin<br />

• cat/can<br />

• tale/tame<br />

• leather/weather<br />

• dinner/winner<br />
