Phonemic awareness Phoneme deletion activities Phoneme deletion is identifying a new word when a phoneme is removed from the original word. What’s left? This activity encourages your pupils to be sound detectives. 1. Say a word and then ask the pupils to determine what the word would change to if a sound is removed; for example, ‘What word is left if we remove the /s/ from smile?’ (mile) 2. Continue in this manner. A list of these riddles is provided below. • What word is left if we remove the /t/ in trust? (rust) • What word is left if we remove the /t/ in plant? (plan) • What word is left if we remove the /n/ in snake? (sake) • What word is left if we remove the /d/ in board? (boar) • What word is left if we remove the /c/ in cat? (at) • What word is left if we remove the /n/ in brown? (brow) • What word is left if we remove the /p/ in plate? (late) • What word is left if we remove the /l/ in slick? (sick) Deletion cards Use this activity to allow your pupils to practise phoneme deletion independently. Materials: • copies of cards on pages 20 and 21 • scissors 1. Photocopy the word cards on pages 20 and 21. Laminate them and cut them apart. 2. Each card has one dot below the word. The dot indicates the place where the card can be folded backwards to ‘delete’ a letter. 3. The pupil’s task is to read the original word and then determine the word that will remain when the first or last letter is removed.
