Fluency
The quiet corner
More fluency activities – 1
When learning to increase fluency, it is important for pupils to hear themselves reading. To allow pupils the
chance to practise, provide a quiet corner in your classroom by using bookcases, filing cabinets, rolling
chalk or whiteboards etc. to form the walls of this area. Provide pillows or carpet squares to add comfort.
Depending on the available light in this corner, you may want to provide a lamp. This will also create a
peaceful environment. Review your expectations of the use of this area, including the number of pupils
allowed, noise level and purpose. You may want to post a rotating schedule to designate when pupils will
have the opportunity to visit the quiet corner.
Who’s on the phone?
Having all pupils read aloud at once can create a rather chaotic classroom environment. Alleviate this
problem by making individual ‘telephones’ for your pupils.
Materials
• two PVC elbow joints (per pupil)
• 7.5 cm PVC pipe (per pupil)
1. To make a telephone, you need two PVC pipe elbow joints and a straight piece of PVC pipe measuring
approximately 7.5 cm.
2. Attach the elbows to each end of the straight pipe.
3. Turn both elbows in the same direction, so one opening can be held by the ear, while the other
opening is situated near the mouth.
4. When the pupil speaks softly into the mouthpiece, his or her voice will be amplified in the
earpiece.
5. Have pupils practise smooth reading as they speak
into the PVC telephone.
