10. Recommendations<br />
We recommend that:<br />
• Purchasers and decision makers privilege first the best performing prostheses within<br />
the class and second those for which there is more evidence of good performance at<br />
the 5 year point.<br />
• New <strong>knee</strong> prostheses be tested in adequately designed evidence-generating programmes<br />
in the EU.<br />
• Following the consolidated experience of other countries and of the already existing<br />
Italian regional registries, a national <strong>knee</strong> arthroplasty registry should be organised<br />
in a short period. The structure adopted for the Italian national arthroplasty registry<br />
consisting in a federation of regional registries coordinated by the ISS, using as a support<br />
for the data collection the discharge records integrated with additional information<br />
regarding the patient and the device, should be taken into account. As already<br />
performed in the Swedish registry, the assessment of sampled patients health related<br />
quality of life should be included in the protocol.<br />
