Water
worries
bubble
over on
Chestnut
Street
By Thor Jourgensen
Lynnfield Weekly Editor
A day after upper Chestnut Street area residents
raised concerns about their water to the Board of
Selectmen, the Lynnfield Center Water District’s
superintendent insisted the district’s water is safe.
“Our water meets all the criteria of the (federal)
Safe Water Act,” Kenneth Burnham said.
Burnham acknowledged the water discoloration
problems vexing Cortland Lane residents
and their neighbors and said a planned high-pressure
flushing of the district’s pipe will help reduce
discoloration.
Karen Colby, Peter Volpe and three other
neighbors vented their frustration to selectmen
during the board’s Monday night meeting at
MarketStreet. Karen Colby, Cortland Lane, held
up a bottle of bronze-tinted water she said resembles
tea her family likes to drink.
“I can’t tell you how many white towels we’ve
ruined. This has been going on for a long, long
time,” Colby said.
Volpe accused the district of “avoiding and denying
this problem.” Burnham in a Tuesday interview
denied that claim. He said the district is
prepared to do flushing with the aim of reducing
discoloration as soon as it has sufficient water
WEEKLYNEWS.NET - 978-532-5880 AUGUST 23, 2018
From Africa to Lynnfield
For the past four years, priests
from the Society of African
Missions (SMA) have assisted
the Lynnfield Catholic
Collaborative for one month
during the summer. This relationship
provides a unique opportunity
for sharing cultures, and
learning what makes us different
and what makes us the same.
This year, Father Francis
Barka Nado, SMA, from the
Central Republic of Africa, is
living and working in the parishes
of St. Maria Goretti and
Our Lady of the Assumption for
the month of August.
Father Francis has quickly
become part of our community
– celebrating mass, attending
ministry meetings, joining in
parish social events, and sharing
his smile and personal stories.
Tell us about your homeland.
Central African Republic
(CAR) is a landlocked country
in the heart of the African continent.
It is comparable to the
size of Texas with a total population
estimated at 4.5 million.
A former French colony, CAR
became independent in 1960,
but has long experienced political
instability. A military coup
in March 2013 tore the country
apart with brutal humanitarian
crimes. The country is ranked
among the poorest in the world,
but the soil is rich with many
natural resources. Protestants,
Catholics, Muslims, and traditional
worshippers have long
coexisted, but our social cohesion
is suffering from religious
manipulation by individuals
and foreign nations who have
their own agendas.
Since the country’s official
language is French, how did
you learn to speak English so
well?
I can express myself in
English but I am not so sure
if I speak good English. Back
home, we speak our national
language, Sango. We begin to
learn French in kindergarten.
For theological studies we
are expected to be bilingual
in French and English since
they are the two official languages
of our missionary
society. I speak Sango,
French, English, and Fongbe,
which is spoken in the Benin
Republic.
Tell us about your work as an
SMA priest.
After nine years of parish
ministry in different African
countries, I started working
in administration in 2009.
Currently, I am the leader of
the SMA Fathers in the Central
African Republic including the
Central African SMA priests
and seminarians, and all the
SMA missionaries from other
countries who are working
in CAR. I supervise the SMA
outreach program in an area
that was at the traumatic epicenter
of the rebel battle in
2013. We have a clinic, run
by a nurse/nun, that tends to
13,000 patients per month. We
also provide services to orphans
and widows through our
Association Mama Theresa.
Many of them are receiving
treatments for HIV.
The Animal Hospital of Lynnfield
Vaccination Clinic
Leptospirosis is an infectious disease caused by bacteria called Leptospira.
It can cause serious damage to the kidney and liver and may be fatal in some
cases. The bacteria is passed in the urine of infected animals and can survive
in the environment for long periods of time in warm stagnant water or moist
soil. Dogs can get infected from wild animals including skunks, raccoons,
opossums, rats, coyotes and deer.
Canine influenza or the dog flu, is caused by the canine influenza virus (CIV).
It is highly contagious and easily spread by direct contact with an infected
dog or through barking, coughing, sneezing or contact with contaminated
objects such as kennels, food and water bowls, collars and leashes.
There are vaccines available for both Leptospirosis and Canine Influenza.
They need to be administered twice within 3-4 weeks, then yearly after that.
The Animal Hospital of Lynnfield, will be holding three vaccine clinics at
1 Bay State Road, Lynnfield, MA to administer these vaccines this summer.
The date of the clinic is:
Thursday, August 30 from 4-7 p.m.
The cost of the leptospirosis vaccine is $37.50
and the influenza vaccine is $42.00.
What are some of the biggest
challenges facing your country/
region?
Our national army has been
dismantled. Rebel groups control
the majority of the territory.
Our civilian population have had
to seek safety in the forest or
have become refugees in neighboring
countries. Our country
has received the lowest world
ranking for quality of life. There
is no security, no running water,
high unemployment, and no
justice for criminals. There is a
high rate of rape for women and
girls, many of whom have been
infected with HIV. Families
have been devastated; towns
have been emptied. There are so
many wounded souls.
BOSTON
FENCE
Where has your ministry as an
SMA father taken you to work?
I have worked in Benin
Republic (2000-2005), South
Africa (2005-2009), Nigeria
(2009-2013) and since 2016, the
Central African Republic in administration
and as team leader.
Tell us about your family and
childhood.
My dad was 20 and my mum
was 16 when they got married in
the Protestant church. I am the
fourth born of eight siblings, but
with the addition of extended
family members, there were 15
kids living in the same house.
Because our home was not far
from the Catholic church and
minor seminary, we lived in a very
Catholic environment. We followed
the rhythm of the seminary
bell to wake up, study, play sports.
I was 13 years old when we lost
our mother. We have one priest
and two Protestant pastors in the
family. My dad has retired to our
village. My siblings are married
and live in different locations.
Tell us about your vocation
journey.
Living near the Catholic
Church and seminary in our village
had a great impact on me.
Although Protestant, my father
was appointed principal of the
Catholic girls school, and the
nuns allowed my siblings and
me to attend school there. The
French missionary priests and
nuns are well respected in our
village – they know us and our
culture, they speak our language,
and they greet everyone no matter
whether they are Catholic or not.
Our Protestant church was too
far from home and their sermons
were too long. I was attracted to
the pictures inside the Catholic
church with the beautiful scenes
of the Bible and Holy Eucharist.
I loved going inside that church.
I finally asked my mum if I could
become a Catholic priest. I registered
for catechism classes and she
provided me with all the necessary
items. During Lent, she even
cooked special meatless meals just
for me. It took me two attempts to
pass the test, but I joined the seminary
training at the age of 13. I
decided that missionary work,
specifically in Africa, was what I
was being called to do, so in June
1992, I joined the SMA Fathers.
What is your favorite
American food?
I enjoy seafood (lobster in
particular) and ice cream.
Is there something you are
hoping to see or do during your
stay in the U.S. this time?
While here, I would love to
see where the Boston Celtics
play and go a movie theatre to
see one American movie.
He said a tentative plan also
calls for asking the district’s
8,000 Lynnfield customers in
late fall to consider approving
a $4 million filtration system
project. He said the discoloration
is caused by a natural mineral
called manganese seeping
out of stone into the water and
said filtration can reduce manganese
content in water.
“We’re on top of this,” he said.
Selectman Chairman Richard
Dalton sympathized with neighbors
but said the district is independent
from town government
and the town has no authority
over it. He urged residents
to continue attending district
meetings (one is scheduled for
next Monday) and asked Town
Administrator Robert Dolan
to consult with town counsel
about “alternative measures we
might consider taking.”
In other business Monday,
selectmen approved applying
for a state Community
Compact grant to enhance the
town’s emergency preparedness.
Dolan urged the board to
apply for a grant to round off
the town’s open space master
plan but Dalton and selectmen
Christopher Barrett and Philip
Crawford prioritized emergency
management planning.
Dolan told the board the Perley
Burrill property is poised for sale
and said the Perry Avenue flood
mitigation project is slated to start
construction. He said comprehensive
meetings to discuss school
security and school enrollment
are scheduled over the next week
and a half and said discussion is
underway on a plan to eliminate
dust raised in the King Rail clubhouse
parking lot.
The board approved
MarketStreet’s request for late
holiday hours and denied a request
for a private party to use the
Common. The Mayberry Lane
block party; September first responder’s
day and South Fire car
wash benefiting high school field
hockey were approved.
The ride is getting a little smoother on town streets
BY THOR JOURGENSEN
LYNNFIELD WEEKLY EDITOR
Looking out the front door
of her Crest Road home, Sara
Delgado-Service can’t wait
until the bottom of Crest with
its steep, flood-prone descent to
Summer Street, gets repaved.
“It was pretty rough and I
think it will be nice once it’s
done,” she said.
Delgado-Service and other residents
living on almost a dozen
local streets will get their wishes
for smoother, well-drained streets
granted by mid-September when
Town Engineer Charles Richter
anticipates this summer’s-worth
of street work will finish up.
With 68 miles of streets,
many resembling country lanes
rather than modern byways,
Lynnfield poses annual maintenance
challenges to Richter
and town public works officials
who solicit contractors annually
to regrade and pave streets most
in need of attention.
This summer’s list includes
Some streets haven’t seen
significant reconstruction in
50 years. Others, like Crest,
which runs up to Pillings Pond,
were once lanes serving camps
grouped around the ponds.
The town gets $420,000 in
state money to spend on road
work and matches that amount
with $500,000 in local tax
revenue. In 2016, road work
consultant Beta Engineering
surveyed Lynnfield streets and
ranked them from those in the
worst shape to ones in relatively
good shape.
Richter working with DPW
helps select the streets most in
need of repair every spring and in
the last three years well over 20
streets have been rebuilt. Town
officials reevaluate Beta’s list
a street in need of attention.
“Every street has its own issues
and winter does a heck of
a lot of damage,” Richter said.
Part of the challenge for town
officials as they assess street reconstruction
is Lynnfield’s age.
Many streets were built in the
1950s and ‘60s and need, if not
demand, attention.
“The streets are coming of
age,” he said.
Delgado-Service’ biggest complaint
about Crest is the ponds
that form during heavy rains, like
the Sunday, Aug. 12 storm, at
Crest and Summer Street.
“Work needed to be done,”
she said.
Rebuilding a road involves
several contractors and a multistep
process. Big grinders churn
the asphalt into material for a
new road base. A binder coat
is applied to the base while
workers set curbstone along the
street’s sides and rebuild handicapped
ramps and driveway
aprons. Curbstones are important
because they channel
road drainage and provide a
guide for snowplows to prevent
damage to lawns and driveways.
The process resembles a
ballet, with contractors coordinating
their timing and working
to ensure the height of the rebuilt
road conforms seamlessly
with lawn edges and sidewalks
along the street.
“It’s an involved process. The
key is to have it all meld together,”
Richter said.
He said town residents are
almost always receptive to road
work but are anxious to see the
equipment with its attendant
noise leave their neighborhood.
Crest is scheduled to be completed
by month’s end but Richter
said schedules depend to varying
degrees on contractor’s obligations
outside Lynnfield and
weather. Delgado-Service said
the town and contractors are
doing a good job rebuilding Crest
and she looks forward to making
a smooth turn onto Summer once
the work is completed.
We love to hear from you.
Stuart G. Merle, DMD
LYNNFIELD — Stuart G. Merle, DMD of
Lynnfield, on Friday, August 17, 2018.
For 47 years, he was the beloved husband
of Gale Ann (Wolman) Merle. Loving
father of Jeremy & Jessica Merle of
Newton and Andrew & Martha Merle of
Wellesley. Adored grandfather of Taylor,
Bennett and Violet. Cherished son of Vivian
(Ohringer) Merle of FL and the late
Sydney Merle. Dear brother of Gordon &
Joanne Merle of FL.
Stuart moved to Boston to attend Tufts
Dental School, and then back to New
York for his pediatric dental residency.
He then returned to the Boston area to establish
his two pediatric dental practices in W. Peabody and
Lynn. Through the years, he followed the activities of
his patients, enjoying semi-annual updates on their
lives, well into adulthood. He established a close relationship
with many. His devotion to children’s dentistry
took him to Israel where he worked in the Dental
Volunteers for Israel clinic for several years, treating
children from the Jerusalem area and connecting with
Israeli culture.
Early on in his career, Stuart invested in extensive
photography equipment for his dental practice. That
developed his love of photography that escalated
through the years. His camera bag was with him at
all times and his photos in his home and those of
others continue to display his keen eye for detail.
His photos were chosen to appear in several travel
publications.
Stuart had wanderlust that took him to many
countries and cultures, always recording his adventures
through his lens. Some of his favorite adventures
were in Israel, India, Russia,
Southeast Asia, South America, Morocco,
Europe, Croatia, Canada and the
west coast of the United States.
Stuart remained active throughout his
life, looking forward to his weekly tennis
games for male bonding and exercise.
He was also a runner, continuing that
sport until recently, regardless of where
he was in the world. He loved the Red
Sox, switching allegiance from that New
York team when he moved to Boston.
Stuart’s greatest loves were his two
sons. His pride in them was unequaled.
He shared the love and pride when they married
Jessica (Jeremy) and Martha (Andrew). His greatest
smiles came when he was with his three grandchildren.
They brought incomparable joy and three new
photographic subjects into his life. The literary world
is enhanced by the book he wrote for Taylor, entitled,
Taylor’s Weekly Adventures with Washie, available
soon on Amazon.
Stuart will be remembered for his genuine smile,
his practical jokes, finding humor in much of life,
and his outgoing and gregarious personality.
Service information: Services will be held at
the Levine Chapels, 470 Harvard St., Brookline
on Monday, August 20 at 10:30am. Burial
in the Or Emet Cemetery, 776 Baker St., West
Roxbury. Memorial observance following the
burial through 9pm and continuing Tuesday and
Wednesday from 1-4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. at his
late residence. In lieu of flowers, remembrances
may be made to Dental Volunteers for Israel
HAD ENOUGH?
While some medications need to be taken long-term to treat chronic
conditions, it is important to review all other medications to determine
whether the dosages need to be adjusted or the drugs should be discontinued
altogether. With this in mind, it should be pointed out that approximately
6 percent of patients who are prescribed opioids (oxycodone)
after surgery are still taking them three months later, even in cases of
minor procedures. This places patients at serious risk because taking an
opioid for more than three months increases the risk of addiction by 15
times, according to the CDC. Aside from that, many older adults report
regular use of prescription or over-the-counter sleep aids, which increases
their risk of falling.
In general, statins are well-tolerated medications. More serious, but
rare side effects of statins include muscle pain or cramping, high blood
sugar, and liver problems. If you have high cholesterol, or if it runs in your
family, consult with your doctor about a treatment and prevention plan.
To learn more, please call VILLAGE PHARMACY at 781-334-3133, or see
us in the Colonial Shopping Center. Next to your personal doctor, your
pharmacist is the most informed about the various medications available
and their contraindications.
HINT: Despite the fact that proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) used to treat
heartburn are only intended for short-term use, they are frequently overprescribed
and overused, which may increase the risk of bone fractures.
Lamusta dives in as new football coach for the Pioneers
By Harold Rivera
LYNNFIELD — All summer long new Lynnfield
High School football coach Pat Lamusta has counted
down the days left until the start of the new season, his
first at the helm as head coach.
The big day finally came last Friday, but thanks to
Mother Nature, Lamasta had to wait one more day to
get out on the field at Pioneer Stadium.
“It was a real nightmare, first we plan to be outside,
then the lightning came in, so it was just back inside
and hope for the weather to improve,” Lamusta said.
“It was very disjointed but once Saturday came, I think
the guys were so excited to have nice weather so they
could go outside. They were really focused on football
and that’s what’s great about preseason. There are
no distractions, so they can focus only on football until
school starts.”
Lamusta is more than ready to get started in his new
role at Lynnfield.
“There’s a mood of excitement and anticipation,”
Lamusta said. “The players were in limbo in March and
April while they were doing the coaching search. There
was a bit of uncertainty. I’m seeing a cohesive group
on all levels. The sophomores are gelling with the seniors,
the freshmen are buying in. This group’s very
much together. They’re excited. We want to prove we
can continue the winning tradition despite the changes
in the coaching staff. Saturday we went longer than expected,
but I just got addicted once we started. This is
a group you would have to kick off the field to get them
to leave, so that helps set the tempo for the season.”
Lamusta was named the new Lynnfield head football
coach in May, taking over for former head coach Neal
Weidman who stepped down in March after 10 seasons
with the Pioneers. Prior to stepping into the coaching
realm, Lamusta played football at Lynnfield (2004-
2007) and Framingham State (2010-2013) as an outside
linebacker/fullback. He currently teaches history
at Lynnfield High. Lamusta spent four seasons (2014-
Clayton Marengi leads the charge during a drill at
practice.
2017) as an assistant on Weidman’s staff.
Lamusta credited Weidman for building a winning
culture within the program.
“There’s a winning culture, there’s a winning tradition,”
Lamusta said. “That’s much different from when
I played. The program was struggling when I played.
When I came back to coach, things had changed. Neal
did a great job building a strength and conditioning
program. The numbers were high. The kids were really
committed, even the multi-sport athletes were
committed to football. There’s a tradition of guys being
committed to football, even in the offseason.”
That tradition of offseason commitment has carried
over to this year. The Pioneers have prepared for the
upcoming fall season by taking part in a handful of 7v7
tournaments, and strength and conditioning programs.
“We have our regular workouts throughout the
summer and the turnout for the most part has been above
average,” Lamusta said. “We were in two 7v7 tournaments.
We went to one hosted by Endicott in June and
we went to one at St. John’s Prep in July. We were also
in a passing league Tuesday nights with tough teams
like Andover, Billerica. We had a good combination of
strength and conditioning and 7v7 leagues for the skill
position kids.”
Among those who’ve left a solid early impression on
Lamusta are seniors Hunter Allain, Cole Moretti and
Leo Quinn, and junior John Lee.
Lamusta said the administration aspect of being a
head coach has created a bit of learning curve for him
but the time he spent shadowing Weidman has helped
in making adjustments.
“I think as an assistant you don’t really see much of
the administrative side of being a head coach so that
was surprising,” Lamusta said. “But I worked closely
with Weidman so I was involved on the day-to-day
stuff and the offseason. I had an idea of what the time
commitment was like. Now it’s nice because I can take
that experience and put my own spin on it.”
Lamusta spent a week in mid-August directing a
youth clinic organized by the Lynnfield Pioneer Youth
Football and Cheer club.
“We met with LPYFC back in July and coordinated
our areas of mutual benefit and concern to put the 2-day
clinic together and we had 25 7th and 8th graders in
all who worked on offensive skills one day and defensive
skills the second day,” Lamusta said. “The kids on
the team were great, especially captains Hunter Allain,
Leo Quinn and Jaret Simpson along with seniors Brett
Cohee and Jeff Floramo and juniors Anthony Florama,
Jr. and Cory Castinetti. We really worked on team
building as it the big message we want to sent to youth
football is we all need to be on the same page.
“The month of August always moves fast, but once
August hit, we put it into overdrive.”
