10 WEEKLYNEWS.NET - 978-532-5880 AUGUST 23, 2018 Peabody falls to Danvers in Gallant final By Daniel Kane LYNN — Danvers survived a late-inning rally and powered to a 17-6 win over Peabody to earn the Gallant Tournament crown Monday night at Reinfuss Field. Caleb White (3-for-4 with a walk and 5 RBI) led the way for Danvers, driving in runs on all three of his hits which included a solo home run in the sixth. Steven Reardon (4-for-4 with a walk and a two-run home run), Tony Silva (2-for-4 with a walk and 2 RBI), and Jake Hamel (1-for-4 with walk and 2 RBI) all drove in two runs each for Danvers. Michael Moroney and Brady Plaza also had one RBI each. Moroney started the game for Danvers on the mound, throwing five no-hit innings while striking out nine. Moroney finished the night allowing four earned runs on two hits with 10 strikeouts and three walks through 5 2/3 innings. “Michael was lights out and had total command for most of the night,” Danvers manager Dave Gotts said. “He just ran out of gas with one out away and we couldn’t put the nail in the coffin right away.” Despite the loss, Peabody strung together a six-run sixth inning to prevent a shutout. It was a tough battle all night long. “Im very proud of these guys they represented the city very well and didn’t die out there,” Zizza added. “They kept fighting and played all five games hard. I’m very proud of my guys.” Danvers got on the board first, loading the bases and scoring two runs on an infield error in the third inning. Later in the inning, Plaza hit a RBI single to put Danvers up 3-0. From there on the Danvers’ offense came alive. In the fourth inning, Reardon laced a two-run home run to left-center and White added a two-run double to put Danvers up 8-0. Silva also added a run with a RBI single to extend the lead to 9-0. Two more runs were added in the fifth inning thanks to one RBI each from Moroney and Hamel. White then added a solo home run to left to put Danvers up 11-0 in the sixth inning. However, Peabody didn’t go down without a fight. Colin Ridley bunted for a single to give Peabody their first hit of the game in the sixth. Later in the inning Peabody rallied with two outs to score six runs thanks to RBIs from Nick Villano, Connolly and Andino and cut the lead to 11-6. The comeback fell short however and Danvers added six runs of their own in the seventh in an inning highlighted by RBIs from Hamel, White and Silva. Reardon came on in relief to stop the Peabody rally with a strikeout in the sixth and closed things down in the seventh to secure the 17-6 win for Danvers. After an impressive tournament for Danvers on the mound and at the plate, Reardon also took home the tournament MVP award for his team. “We got it from every up and down the order,” Gotts said. “It’s a great group of kids, very respectful, fun to be with and they are great ball players every one of them.” Rain helped make tournament an adventure By Daniel Kane and Anne Marie Tobin LYNN — After a back-andforth game, Peabody got the clutch hits needed in the end to beat Lynn, 8-7, Sunday at Reinfuss Field to advance to the Gallant Tournament final. Relief pitcher Daniel Zizza dominated, going five innings, allowing one run on two hits while striking out 11. “It was a crazy one,” Peabody manager Steve Zizza said. “We jumped out to a 4-1 lead, I didn’t think that would hold up and it only lasted a few innings. Daniel came in and pitched amazing. His curveball was on tonight.” Nick Villano (2-for-4, 2 RBI) was the late-inning hero, driving in the tying-run in the fifth inning and hitting a game-winning RBI single in the seventh. Reymi Andino (2- for-3, 4 RBI) blasted a 3-run homer in the first, while Cam Connolly and Jariel Tollentino had one RBI each. “Everyone in the lineup had a hit and we got the clutch hits,” Steve Zizza said. “Nick Villano came through when we needed him, a true team player.” Lynn jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Peabody responded in its half of the first, taking a 4-1 lead thanks to a RBI single from Connolly and Andino’s dinger. Andino RBI single in the second bumped the lead to 5-1. Bu Lynn responded with five runs in the third to lead, 6-5. By the seventh inning Peabody had tied the game 7-7 thanks to Villano’s first RBI. With the bases loaded, Villano delivered again, walkoff style, with a game-winning single to punch Peabody’s ticket to the final against undefeated Danvers. Peabody 14, Salem 1 After a four more days of rain delays, the Gallant Tournament finally resumed play Sunday afternoon in a day-night doubleheader at Reinfuss Field. Peabody, made up of representatives from both the Peabody and Peabody Western Little Leagues, took on Salem and stayed alive in the losers’ bracket with a mercy-ruled 14-1 win over Salem win to set up a night clash with Lynn. Zizza (2 innings, 1 hit, 1 run, four strikeouts), Herbert (2 innings, four strikeouts) and Andino (1 inning, 1 strikeout) combined for a 1-hitter. Herbert came on in relief of Zizza in the third and retired all six batters he faced. Andino needed only eight pitches to set down the side in order in the fifth to seal the victory. Peabody recorded just seven hits, six of them in the third when Peabody sent 13 batters to the plate with nine of them scoring to put the game out of reach at 12-1. It also took advantage of nine walks and two hit batsmen. Ridley (1-for-1, 3 runs), who 2 Large Cheese Pizzas $14.99 was on base in all four at-bats, started the game with a walk, and scored on a grounder to third off the bat of Zizza (2 walks, 2 RBI, run) to stake Peabody to a 1-0 lead. Connolly (1-for-3, 2 runs, RBI) led off the second by getting hit and scored on a single by Josh Sigmon (1- for-2, RBI, run). With one out, Herbert Anthony (run) reached base on error at short and scored on a wild pitch. Tolentino (3 walks, 3 runs) and Zizza led off the third with back-to-back walks. Tolentino scored on a single by Villano. Villano got to third on Connolly’s double and scored on single by Andino (1-for-3, run). Peabody continued to chip away, one base at a time. Sigmon walked to load the bases for Horgan (1-for-3, run), who came up with a clutch RBI single to bring Connolly home. Ridley followed with a single that scored Andino, then Tolentino worked a bases-loaded walk. Zizza’s sacrifice fly plated Horgan and then Ridley after an errant throw. It wasn’t easy, but mission accomplished. Peabody’s Chad Martin delivered the game-winning hit on a 2-RBI single in the top of the seventh, leading the Champions to a 4-3 win over the Kingston Night Owls at Fraser Field. “In my opinion, Chad’s the MVP of the league,” Peabody co-manager Steve Gridley said. “He led the league in home runs, RBI, hit well over .400. He’s done clutch things like that all season.” With the win, Peabody forced a winner-take-all Game 7, which was slated for Tuesday night at Fraser. Champions starting pitcher Mike Gallo pitched a solid game for Peabody. Gallo finished his night with eight strikeouts and three earned runs on six hits. “Mike’s clutch,” Gridley said. “If he’s not the Cy Young, the only reason he’ll lose it is to our lefty, Tyler Leavitt. Mike’s one of the best pitchers in the league. He gave up that one bad inning. One good piece and it was still off a fingertip to go. He got out of every other jam he had.” Knight Owls starter Josh Partridge kept the Champions off the scoreboard for the first four innings before surrendering two runs in the top of the fifth. Patridge finished with four strikeouts and two earned runs on six hits in his 4 2/3 innings of work. After a scoreless inning and a half, Kingston cashed in on a scoring opportunity in the bottom of the second. Greg Emanuelson was hit by a pitch to leadoff the inning and Dan Morin followed with a single. Gallo fanned the next two batters but Jordan Perez singled to keep the rally alive. With the bases loaded, Nick Shumski (1-for-2, 3 RBI) turned three Kingston baserunners into three Kingston runs with a triple to right field. The Night Owls led 3-0 at the end of two innings. Peabody’s offense came alive DINING GUIDE DIRECTORY in the top of the fifth. Champions leadoff batter Dave Ruggiero (3- for-4, 2 runs) singled and swiped second base. Derek Lyons (1- for-4, 2 runs) laced a RBI single, scoring Ruggiero with Peabody’s first run of the night. Lyons scored on a RBI single from Martin (3-for-4, 3 RBI), slimming Kingston’s lead to 3-2. The Champions turned their luck around with some seventh-inning magic. Ruggiero singled to start the rally and Lyons reached on error that could’ve been a double-play. Shorey (1-for-2) walked to load the bases for Martin, who hit a 2-RBI single and gave Peabody its first lead of the night at 4-3. “When this team gives you something you better take advantage,” Gridley said. “They gave us a couple chances and we didn’t take advantage. That time, they gave us that play where the kid went to go get the ball and it tipped off his glove. Thankfully Chad had a big at-bat against the guy who’s probably going to start Game 2. That was a big at-bat.” Gallo surrendered a walk to the lone batter he faced in the bottom of the seventh and gave way to Scott Weissman in relief. Weissman escaped a one-out, bases-loaded jam to seal the 4-3 win. “We wanted to give them somebody they hadn’t seen yet,” Gridley said, “and that was Scott.
