2018 South Carolina Nurses Association
Scholarships and Awards Committee
This committee continues the work of reviewing the process, number, and amount to be awarded for each
scholarship in conjunction with the treasurer and finance committee. The License Plate Initiative (Nurses’
Care Scholarship) application process is now conducted online. In 2018, $22,000 will be awarded which is a
decrease from 2018. SCNF has also been awarded 2 American Nurses Foundation Advocacy Scholarships of
$1000 each that the Foundation will be providing to SC Nurses this year.
Although contact is made with all registered nurse education programs in the State, scholarship applications are
not received from all schools. Efforts continue to assure that all eligible students have the opportunity to apply
for SCNF-managed scholarships.
Marketing and Development
SCNF participated for the third time in Midlands Gives. Midlands Gives is an event that promotes raising
money and awareness for Midlands nonprofits during a 24-hour online giving challenge. Much preparation and
planning is required of each participating non-profit which Renatta Loquist aptly spearheaded for SCNF. As a
result of our participation, the development of a much-needed social media presence was begun and additional
monies were added to the general fund. The May 1, 2018 Midlands Gives event was successful but did not
result in as much revenue generated as last year.
Palmetto Gold
The Palmetto Gold Steering Committee is a special committee of the Foundation and is responsible for
implementing the Palmetto Gold Nurse Recognition and Scholarship Program. As in previous years, 100 nurses
were selected to receive the prestigious Palmetto Gold Award and were recognized at the Palmetto Gold Gala
on April 21, 2018. The Palmetto Gold Scholarship Award Recipients were also recognized at the Gala event.
This event was the largest ever with over 700 guests and recipients in attendance. In its history, over 1700
hundred nurses have been recognized and over $392,000 awarded in nursing scholarships. The proceeds from
the 2018 Gala will again be used to award nursing scholarships in each of the registered nurse programs in our
state. The 2019 Gala is scheduled for April 29, 2019
Respectfully submitted
Elaine Reimels, President
