2018 South Carolina Nurses Association The advocacy program of SCNA is alive and well! Legislation directly affecting the practice of nurses continued this year. This was a marvelous year in that S345, the APRN bill, passed in the waning days of the session. The passage represented untold hours of work and dedication by APRNs in SC to see this passage take place. We were particularly grateful to Senator Tom Davis and Representative Gary Clary for their steadfast support of moving the APRN legislation forward. We continued to work diligently with other groups in coalition. SCNA was a prominent member of the coalition that is called SC Access for Health Care. Each group that is part of the coalition is required to pay a fee of $5,000.00 for sitting as members of the Executive Committee. The continuation of a large NP/CNM/CNS day at the State House was very well attended and well received by members of the General Assembly. The continuation of an outreach program for support of this work to many groups in SC who truly have a stake in ensuring that the coming influx of people to the healthcare system can be handled properly in SC is ongoing. We shall continue working in 2019 to work to make certain that efforts to implement the law are successful. Thanks to each and every member who worked so hard to see this bill finally passed. A special thanks goes to Stephanie Burgess whose work was truly remarkable on this important issue. SCNA continues to support and have many members working with the State Implementation grant (formerly One Voice One Plan) for the working through of all of the issues that were found in the Institute of Medicine Report on the Future of Nursing in 2010. I am a member of the executive committee and serve on the committee that is working toward the enhancement of the practice of nursing for all levels of nursing. SCNA is also represented in the SC Diabetes Council and as the Institute for Medicine and Public Health work on the future of healthcare. SCNA is represented at each meeting of the SC Board of Nursing and the SC Board of Medical Examiners as well as at other statewide meetings that affect the healthcare field. These are all important venues and allow SCNA to keep current on what is taking place in our state. Once again, SCNA has been stable in terms of the two person staff that you have. Rosie Robinson and I have worked very hard to accomplish all of the work that needs to be done on a daily basis for SCNA as well as on the big projects of the organization. Rosie’s skills and abilities continue to be tested especially in reference to all of the work that is necessary to changing systems within SCNA and all our components... She is a true asset to SCNA in many ways! I continue to know that I have the very best job with learning curves that are sometimes vertical, action days that never seem to end and a wonderful Board with which to work as well as great members who are devoted to the promotion of their very most special profession.
